I’m obsessed with Banshees of Inisherin and I have so many thoughts about it…
SPOILERS
Head Canons: family life (1)
- I imagine that before Pádraic’s and Siobhan’s parents died they all lived together in their cottage. Siobhan would help their mother in the household while Pádraic and their father worked outside.
-Siobhan and her mother were very like minded. She was a smart & beautiful woman. So up to Mr & Mrs Súilleabháin deaths she did not feel the loneliness as a constant companion.
-as a child Siobhan would come up with stories and would tell them to Pádraic.
-young Pádraic wanted to be nice to everyone so he would give away the milk for free. The elder Mr. Súilleabháin had to sit him down and explain that they needed that income to buy food.
-it hit Siobhan & Pádraic really hard when their parents died. But given the time (1915- when they died) it was expected of men to hide their feelings and just to take it. So Pádraic smiled the pain away.
-they both silently agreed that non of them would move into their parents bedroom. They left everything like it was. To keep the memories.
- Siobhan knew it was upon her to look after her (younger?) brother. He never did (or learned how to do) the laundry, cook or do the shopping. She didn’t think he could survive without her.

so many harry potter fans completely erase snape's past and write it over to make him a snobby rich kid who speaks like he's 40 year old count and i think it is so interesting.
because it proves to me that the reality of snape being a kid living in a poverty stricken and abusive household on spinner's end makes you all uncomfortable.
i sure know it made me uncomfortable to re-read the books for the first time and see all the comments about his greasy hair and sallow skin with the new knowledge that these were markers of his poor upbringing. we've heard the saying how being poor never really goes away. snape keeping these two markers as an adult is the author's way of doing it. he's an adult with a better income now but he never quite shakes off spinner's end.
he also stays there as an adult as a way to punish himself, if the front room described as a 'padded cell" is any indicator. he can't move on and he won't allow himself to, and dumbledore won't allow it either. it is he who twists the knife with harry's eyes and tells him this is the only thing he can do to prove he truly loved lily. despite you know, dumbledore apparently not believing this dhe to his shock at snape's patronus 17 years later.
both times in snape's past when he butts heads with petunia is because she insults his background, something he cannot control. she calls him the 'snape boy' from spinner's end, a clearly 'turn up my nose' moment. harry goes through most books referring to snape as 'snape' because snape is a bully and therefore does not have harry's respect. many times adults correct him to say professor. and his first name isn't said often. so this puts a distance to him, almost others him to this 2D character. but 'snape' is an actual person, with feelings and a past, present and future. so severus snape doesn't take kindly to people insulting his family which is why he claps back at petunia.
we also know snape is a muggle name, his muggle father tobias' name. we only find out in book 6 that snape is a half blood. because what wizarding family do you know with the name 'snape'. and prince isn't part of the sacred 28 either. when harry breaks into snape's memories accidentally in occlumency, seeing those three quick snapshots of his life, it's the first time snape starts to become a real person to harry.
moreover, 8 year old snape is described as dirty, unwashed, wearing clothes that are so mismatched it looks deliberate. he hasn't got clothes of his own, wearing an adults jacket and a woman's smock. snape's family either cannot afford to properly clothe or wash their child or they simply don't care too. when petunia insults him again, this time instead of his father she goes for his mother, as she points out snape wearing his mother's blouse, we get another example of underage magic as he causes a tree branch to fall on her.
now despite this, we know it is likely snape really did want to cause her harm due to her insult. snape already is shown to have poor social skills and snaps rather quickly at any point of animosity, but he was also raised in an abusive household. his father whipped him, and shouted at his mother and god knows what else. makes sense that an 8 year old responds to tension with either insults or violence, mirroring his home. snape is also very reluctant to talk about his homelife at all, ending the conversation very pointedly with "he doesn't like anything much." so it's not surprising that a child raised in this kind of environment would respond violently. even worse, he does it without really realising what he has done considering he looked confused when petunia and lily ran away.
on platform 9 and 3/4, snape is eager to get out of his muggle clothes and when put next to james potter, the stark difference between someone who has been loved and adored and someone who hasn't is explicitly put in the books. and lastly when snape calls lily a mudblood after being yanked upside down exposing dirty underwear, lily points that out. her way of saying 'don't you dare say you are better than me - im filthy? how about you wash your clothes.'
all in all, i think the fans write over this backstory because people do not want to give snape any sympathy. he's not the right kind of sympathetic character. he's an unpleasant adult who made terrible decisions. therefore his tragedy doesn't count. it's much easier to hate him when in your head, snape is a rich, snobby supremacist, rather than a penniless, neglected and woefully misguided teenager.
odd that peope can understand the impact of certain characters childhoods like sirius, regulus, draco or harry and how it affected their actions as teens and later adults...
but not snape.
in fact, snape is probably the poorest character in the entire series apart from maybe voldemort, although the orphanage didn't seem underfunded or anything. fans characterise lupin as poor but there is little evidence for him being poor as a child, more as an adult. i've seen people say this was because of the fact that his father worked at the ministry and arthur weasley worked there and he is not rich but the weasley's are poor because there are 7 of them living on one income. and we can assume lupin's muggle mother worked. if anything, lupin's childhood was comfortable but became unstable due to them constantly moving after he was bitten.
abd that's pretty much it, we don't know too much about anyone else. the dursleys are middle class as are hemrione's dentist parents and while the weasley's are poor, they are not poverty stricken - ron never goes hungry. snape also never really adresses his muggle past either. he doesnt bring it up ever. for all his 'life is unfair', he never speaks about that part of his life, choosing to solely reference the marauders. and the two main bullies, james and sirius both being rich kids bullying the poor boy is not lost on me. especially when they constantly reference his greasy hair all the time.
poverty greatly affects a person well into adulthood and we see with snape; it never really goes away. sure he's well spoken now, and doesn't wear mismatched muggle clothing but the remnants are still there. in fact, one of the reasons he hates harry intially is because he thinks the boy has been pampered. quite unlike his upbringing. so i think it's telling how many people refuse to acknowledge its very existence or the how it shaped snape as a person.
becuase i think it all makes you feel really uncomfortable. why else would you ignore or completely erase it?

you know what really gets me about the werewolf prank?
aside from the fact that you know, it wasn't just a prank and could have got severus AND james killed and ruined lupin's life AND probably would have got the school shut down? because let's be real here could you imagine? "hogwarts to close after headmaster and head of wizengamot albus dumbledore allows werewolf child into school who murders two fifth year students during full moon."
and it's not lost on me that severus didn't see james as heroic in this moment, because he just saw james having his friends best interests in mind and not giving a crap about him either. why? because sorry marauders stans, this incident happened BEFORE 'snape's worst memory' not after. so you can't use it as a turning point in jame's character because he saved severus then went on to continue bullying him like nothing happened. pretty much proving severus' point about james not caring or being particularly noble.
it's the fact that james was the only one to do the right thing. sirius didn't care. fck knows what peter was doing.
i also take issue with hermione also referring to this murder attempt as just a prank to dumbledore in the book, because i can take ron and harry thinking that. but not hermione. hermione is SMART. she's the one who cracked lupin was a werewolf. she KNOWS the danger. hell, the MARAUDERS knew the danger, it was why they became animagi in the first place. so i do not believe hermione would have heard remus out of his own mouth say it was a prank, but life risking when james was involved and not put two and two together. she's smarter than that.
p.s. stop calling severus petty for wanting the marauders expelled. i'd want my bullies expelled too tf?

Don’t condemn Draco for bullying Harry and then praise the Marauders for bullying Snape.
Don’t condemn Snape for dropping a branch on Petunia at an age when he couldn’t control his magic and then praise Harry for setting a snake on Dudley at an age when he couldn’t control his magic.
Don’t condemn Snape for changing sides when Lily’s life was threatened and then praise Dumbledore, Regulus, and Narcissa for changing sides when the lives of their loved ones were threatened.
Don’t condemn Snape for his treatment of his students and then sweep other teachers’ mistreatments of their students under the rug.
Don’t condemn Snape for being a product of his environment and then excuse various other characters’ behavior by saying that they were products of their environments.
Don’t condemn Snape for doing certain things and then praise other characters for doing the exact same things just because you like them. Your hypocrisy is showing.

10000% yes
Friendly reminder that:
Tonks did nothing wrong. She just fell in love with a man. Stop bashing her because of your toxic puppyship that was never going to happen anyway.
The Weasleys—besides Molly—treated Percy like absolute shit, especially Fred and George. “Abandoning” your family because said family never acts like they care about you and never shows you the appreciation you deserve even after you got the job of your dreams is NOT a bad thing. Most of you hate him because you know damn well you’d do the exact same thing if you were in his shoes.
People who love Snape aren’t “Snape apologists,” you guys just can’t handle the fact that about 99% of your so-called arguments can be debunked by canon facts and quotes.
Cho Chang is not a “crybaby” or “weak.” She had just lost her wonderful boyfriend and was having a hard time dealing with her grief. Yes, playing with Harry’s feelings was wrong, but she was going through a lot of different emotions. She was just a hormonal 15/16 year old. You would all go crazy and call her heartless had she just immediately gotten over Cedric’s death.
Ron was not “abusive” to Hermione, he was a jerk to her sometimes and he’s wrong for that, but he always regretted it. If anything, it’s Hermione who’s abusive. She was the one who sent raging canaries (which were described as “golden bullets” btw) at him which left him bleeding, and punched him all over when he returned in DH. Had Ron been the one who did all this, you all would give him hell for that (and rightfully so).
Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk.

Snape Derangement Syndrome: When one’s negative feelings about Snape are present to such dramatic extents that it prevents one from an objective literary analysis; when reactions against Snape have little or nothing to do with what is actually truly in the books; when the mere mention of Snape is enough to send one into either forgetfulness or rage, leaving behind any balance at all.

I don't think Dumbledore ever expected the kid who hated him more than anything in the world that he sacrificed to the Dark Side in order to keep the blind trust of his "Champions" to be the only person he would trust the most on his last years alive (because i believe that if justice had been done that day Severus wouldn't have spiraled as fucking hard as he did, in his mind there was no Light side, only two Dark Lords and that's a whole ass rant for another day )
I believe that he may have realized that he made a mistake letting him fall through the cracks to keep the Marauders when the latter crashed and burned as soon as they got out of School (as many peaked in highschool kids do). I think that he might had wanted to use them as " Symbols" of trust, inclusion, camaraderie and friendship to set an example of hope and courage to the rest and keep the morale up (i mean in theory it does sounds nice : A Pureblood from an evil family who chose different, a werewolf who fights for justice, another Pureblood who rejects old norms and fights for others, and your everyday person showing that everyone can make a change ; but that's another whole different rant and this one is long enough)
And while doing that he might have overlooked too hard their negative attributes and let himself be swept (like everyone else irl) for the idea of a selfless group of friends who belongs to the Light and fought for good and the less fortunate
I also believe that when the Incident happened he was forced to open his eyes a little, he got a reminder that Sirius still was a Black, that Remus was still a Werewolf that not everything would go as smoothly as he had hoped. Nonetheless he was faced by a choice.
He had one (1) poor genius dark arts obsessed halfblood Severus Snape on one side who was under Malfoy's influence and whose probable only anchor to the Light side was the friendship he was steadily loosing with Lily Evans
and the Marauders.
I'm sure he realized that he couldn't do anything for Snape without loosing the Marauders. Sirius would never forgive him for not taking his side even if he was in the wrong. He would start to question him and if Sirius trust in him wavered that meant no James and no James meant no Marauders, no Marauders meant everything that he overlooked during all their years would have been in vain, everyone he allowed them to hurt would have been wronged in vain
I theorize that before the incident his plan with Severus was to try and keep him in a neutral grey area through Lily Evans (since he would never truly form part of the Light if the Light contained the Marauders) because he recognized that what a powerful asset and enemy he could be for either side and if he couldn't have him on his he at least would try to avoid Voldemort having that advantage (because come on this kid was a complete genius and i doubt things like that slipped past him, not anymore, not since Tom)
But when the Incident happened he had to choose between one of them. He weighted on one hand his Champions and in the other maybe what could be the one biggest threat in Voldemort's ranks. He was already too far in with the Marauders to back down now and he trusted that they would be able to handle him once they inevitably face each other in battle.
He knew he was dooming Severus Snape to the Dark Side, he basically took the Light away from him and in a way gave permission to the Marauders to keep tormenting him. This was the gravest thing they could have done and there was no consequence, that meant there was no limit and now they know it.
He knew Severus would never forgive him, he knew he was making a life long commitment to the Marauders now, he knew he was gaining 4 allies who would follow him blindly thinking he would always back them up (and now he had to) and one enemy who had every reason to want to destroy him, he knew he just handed Voldemort a powerful ally in a silver platter and he knew that he might regret that decision
He just didn't know how much he would regret it later though
Fuckin wow…🤯🤯🤯
You basically just put the thoughts of majority of them snapedom into words, Anon…that’s amazing
I was so mad at Dumbledore while reading this😭 like he really put 200% of his faith in four teenage bullies… pls ✋🏽
He allowed all of that to happen…out of naivety
Because he thought they were gonna be the knights of the light side…but in reality he was tormenting the one that was gonna save them all
Damn.
Thank you for this amazing rant, Anon 🙏🏽

Snape really wasn't that bad when it came to punishment, not like the fandom/snaters make out. I'd rather be punished by him than by McGonagall. She was brutal. Her detentions were far worse than Snape's. She often took points AND gave detentions, you know, because taking points clearly wasn't punishment enough. And then, in OOTP, she punished Harry for being punished! Give me Snape any day.

TRIGGER WARNING*
DOMESTIC VIOLENCE*
/ DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AGAINST MEN*
When Amber Heard first came out and accused Johnny Depp of Domestic Violence, most of the world fell silent. We were in the middle of a #MeToo movement and Amber was counting on that.
Some had no choice but to believe the woman who appeared outside of a court with (what seemed to be) a bruise and a 1 minute video snippet of JD upset, loudly shutting cabinet doors after catching his finger in a drawer- but the full video was finally released to show Amber setting Johnny up & pictures of her inconsistent, vanishing bruise surfaced.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
However, the damage was done and Amber Heard with her co-conspirators succeeded in publicly tearing down a man who had done nothing but fall in love with a medically diagnosed Narcissist.
As the lies kept on, Johnny silently suffered until he gained the strength to stand up and speak out. He had had enough of letting the lies go on and he finally shared the disturbing truth.
Tumblr media
A man who had spent majority of his career avoiding headlines- and dealing with media outlets at a distance- spoke into the face of the beast: he was the real victim of abuse who had covered for Amber their entire relationship and even after.
The evidence continues to surface to this day of Johnny's suffrage. Audios, security cameras, body cam footage, witness statements, medical records, police statements... you name it and you'll find that the truth is there supporting Johnny Depp.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The fact is men ARE abused yet it is so much harder for them to be believed than women because of the toxic stigma that men are "stronger" and "bigger" and therefore "able to withstand" verbal and/or physical violence. This toxicity leads to mockery, doubt, and ostracism.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hopefully this case in VA will find justice for Johnny Depp and be a catalyst for the men who are suffering and who are in need of justice.
IncrediblyAverage on YouTube shares the truth about Johnny Depp's abuse and breaks down Amber Heards lies using hard facts and evidence. I highly recommend a watch.
***If you or anyone you know is being abused, please reach out to the National Domestic Violence Hotline 1-800-799-SAFE ***

Hehehehehe Harry went through a lot and he’s still a good person
Hehehehehe
Yes, they were both abused.
However,
Harry wasn’t put into Slytherin.
Harry wasn’t surrounded by Death eater students.
Harry wasn’t primed to hate muggles.
Harry has his best friends.
Severus had no support system.
Sev wasn’t favoured by the headmaster.
Severus wasn’t a Gryffindor.
Severus wasn’t popular.
Severus wasn’t famous.
Severus wasn’t a Quidditch player.
Severus was just a penniless, unpopular, half-blood Slytherin. So don’t compare them to one another, because that’s unfair and just plain stupid. Also, not everyone deals with trauma the same way, Karen.🤡🤡

One thing that makes me uncomfortable, about Snape's story is really how bullying, and bullies, are considered later on. Remus and Sirius don't seem to consider what they've done to Snape to be that much of a big deal, and the people who were adults at the time were either oblivious to the marauders' bullying, or deliberately chose to shove this particular side of them under the rug and mostly only said they were "talented students" (perhaps to avoid tarnishing the reputation of the dead?).
Yes.
I think what makes me uncomfortable is that fandom loves to point out all of the people who are deeply affected by Snape’s bullying; the headcanon that Neville will have a nervous breakdown upon meeting Harry’s son 20 years later, the relentless wails of anguish that Harry dares name his son after Snape, the claim that Hermione is fundamentally broken by his slight against her teeth (it wasn’t decent, but she used the opportunity to change her appearance because she wanted to and was back to defending Snape shortly after), the fact that Cursed Child is ignored where an AU Snape befriends both Ron and Hermione or that Harry is shown to have lasting scars from how he was tormented…but they’re from Petunia’s treatment of him, and not Snape’s.
…but that same fandom ignores the one character who is canonically decades past his own trauma but goes on relentlessly about the impact it had upon him.  It’s arguably one of the least attractive elements of Snape’s character, mostly because he treats an innocent-Harry as some sort of cipher for James, which makes it hard to empathise with him.  …but that’s the point - trauma that’s not dealt with can leave horrible scars, and you can react in awful ways.
And Snape is the poster boy for that.  If you want to complain about the poor running of Hogwarts, of how the teachers are unaware of - or tacitly condone - the bullying that goes on, of how miscreants aren’t punished in an effective manner, of how some children are favoured over others…then it’s worth examining the Marauder era before Harry’s era, and looking at how despite James being punished over and over for his behaviour, he is still made Head Boy and is well regarded.
Snape’s own trauma is ignored because he didn’t become a ‘nice’ or ‘worthy’ victim at the end of it, and because those who bullied him are perceived to be ‘nicer’ or ‘worthier’ people.  Well, yeah, no surprise there, my friend - if you’re someone who hasn’t been trodden on for seven years ‘because you exist’ and if you’re someone who wasn’t lured to his death as a joke and if you don’t have to witness your merciless bully being ‘rewarded’ by the faculty then yes, you might seem like a warmer, kinder person, and you might seem like someone who is easier to get to know, someone more open, someone friendlier than the person who’s been bullied into a corner.
It is of no surprise to me that those teenage bullies are unapologetic for their behaviour retrospectively; that is what I would expect, because from their perspective, it was either a laugh, or it was deserved, or they were grateful that it was Snape on the receiving end and not themselves.  It is, however, gratifying that Harry - wonderfully resilient Harry - is the one who is able to distance himself and say, “I like you guys a lot, I love my father, and I detest Snape…but I can see that this was out of order.”
