Various Types of Locks & Keys
There are just as many different types of locksets as there are doors. Knowing the ins and outs of just one of them doesn’t help much. There are locksmiths in Chandler Heights at 24 Hour Chandler Heights Locksmith that are familiar with the many different types of locks and keys that are out there. Many people looking for a new lock don’t understand the technology by which the key is made. They generally judge the key by its outward appearance, not knowing much about the inside. How it looks on the outside doesn’t matter as much as what it is capable of doing for you from the inside. More types of locks and keys are introduced into the industry annually. Keeping up with them all and how they function can be a challenge, however, we assure you that a professional locksmith will stay on top of things to ensure they are competent in their duties.
Tumblr media
Even though there are so many different types of locks on the market today, there are some that most people are more familiar with than others. Despite having heard of these different types of locks and keys, you may not know much about them. Here are a list of some of the most widely known types of locks and keys and how they function.
Pin Tumbler – The pin tumbler lock is one of the most commonly used types of locks. It has a very simple design and is usually installed on front, exterior doors. The teeth of the key are used as the decoder for the sequence of individual pins in the middle of the lock. They typically come in two different types, tubular and cylinder. The cylinder lock has straight pins that go inward and the tubular lock pins are set in a ring around the inner walls.
Disc Tumbler Lock – This is an improvement to the standard tumbler lock. They have slots and rotating disks and not wafers and pins. While the standard pin tumbler is a pretty simple type of lock, the disc tumbler adds another layer of protection. The teeth of the key get inside the slots from different angles and they have to fit properly in order for the lock to work. This means that this type of lock is more difficult to pick. The disc tumbler lock doesn’t use springs, which means they are suitable for freezing.
Wafer Tumbler Lock – Although more advanced than a pin tumbler the wafer is less advanced than the disc tumbler. It is designed and works very similar to the pin tumbler. Wafers are used instead of pins and it is a spring-loaded lock and comes from the top and bottom of the cylinder. Keys cut on both sides have a code, which makes it harder to compromise the lock. Picking this type of lock is possible but it doesn’t usually render the results that the burglar was hoping for. Although it can be picked with jiggers, pre-fabricated keys of different types, most burglars don’t want to go through the trouble.
Smart Locks – A smart lock works along with a smart phone or other WIFI compatible devices. This means that the person using the lock has the convenience of locking or unlocking the lock from wherever they are. The signal comes from a near by tower that communicates with the locking mechanism inside the lock. This is one of the most popular locks being installed today due to its level of convenience.
Along with the various types of locks that are used today, there are also very commonly made keys that are made. Our locksmiths are often called upon to cut and program the following types of keys.
Transponder keys – Transponder keys are used on newer model vehicles. They enable the user to access entry into their car remotely. They don’t have to have a key installed in the door lock. They simply need to aim the key at the door and press a button to unlock the door. The transponder key has to be programmed to communicate with your vehicles system. It is unique to only your vehicle and this is what makes it difficult to break-into a car that uses a transponder key.
Deadbolts – This is practically the most common security lock that is installed. The deadbolt locks that are installed most often are the single cylinder and double cylinder locks, with the single cylinder being the most popular. This type of deadbolt only requires one key to unlock the lock; whereas, the double-cylinder deadbolt requires a lock for both sides of the lock. This can be problematic when an emergency situation should occur and both keys are unable to be found.
Padlocks – A typical padlock is the most common freestanding lock. It is easy to move from one place to another. With a standard padlock, all that is needed to unlock the lock is a key. However, there is also a combination lock, which is also a padlock. This one requires a combination that the user creates, to unlock the lock.
Knob Locks – This is the type of lock that is installed on exterior doors and is probably the most commonly known type of lock. It isn’t usually installed on its own; a deadbolt lock is usually installed alongside a knob lock. This is because the knob lock is a spring lock with the cylinder inside the knob. This means that if the knob is broken it is easy to gain access inside. This is why a deadbolt lock often accompanies it.
Regardless of the type of locks and keys that you have installed, it definitely helps to know what to look for. If you are building a new home or making some improvements to your existing home, you can always rely on our locksmiths to walk you through the process of choosing the right locks and keys for you. There are many basis choosing the right lock and keys. Allow a locksmith to discuss them with you.

What Locksmiths Do
Years ago if you had asked someone what a locksmith was they would tell you a person that shows up at your house in a pickup truck and has a small tool bag. That would have been correct too. But times have really changed since those days. Modern day master locksmiths like those that work for 24 Hour Chandler Heights Locksmith are highly trained and drive large service vehicles that are fully stocked and carry all the latest locksmith troubleshooting equipment.
Why do locksmiths carry all this specialized equipment? It’s because they do so many tasks these days besides just make keys and fix locks. You might even be surprised at all the different jobs that a locksmith can handle for you at the present time.
Modern Day Locksmith Duties
Here are some of the most requested types of work that residential and commercial customers often ask their locksmith to do for them:
Home, car and business lockouts
One of the most frequent types of calls any locksmith will get is a home, business or auto lockout situation. These can be very frustrating for those customers that experience them. Fortunately, your local locksmith is highly trained to handle a variety of different lockout situations. Often times they rectify a lockout situation for you in less than 60 minutes.
Commercial panic bars and fire doors
Here is a locksmith task that many commercial business owners do not even realize a locksmith can easily handle for them. If you think about it, a panic bar and a fire door are really just two types of locking mechanisms. That’s why skilled locksmiths make it their business to know how to install, upgrade and repair any type of fire door or panic bar locking mechanism.
Keyless electronic locks
There has been a big switch to keyless lock technology over the last few decades. They offer several advantages over mechanical keyed locks. They are the type of lock you never have to worry about losing your keys with and many of them can even be programmed from a central location. These days your local locksmith will be able to easily and install most any type of keyless lock that you have at your home or business.
24/7, 365 locksmith service
You may sleep at night but there is a good chance your local locksmith or their partner does not. That’s because they are standing by waiting to serve you at any hour of the day or night if you should ever require emergency locksmith services. Emergency locksmith service is usually one of the core locksmith services that your local locksmith company will offer. Don’t hesitate to call your local locksmith even if you have a lock problem at 2 am in the morning or on a holiday such as New Year’s Eve.
Deadbolt installation
One of the safest and most secure locking devices is the deadbolt. That’s because they are hard to pick, are virtually crush proof and their strike goes all the way across the door jam. Everyone should have a primary or secondary deadbolt lock on every exterior door. Deadbolt installation, maintenance and repair are jobs that most any locksmith can easily take care of for you.
Free lock consultations
Did you know that many locksmith companies will actually come to your home or place of business and do a free lock consultation? Once they have looked at the locks on your premises they will then tell you which ones work fine, those that need upgrading and those that are in need of repair. This is a service every homeowner or business proprietor is urged to take advantage of. After all, who better to ask about how well the locks in your life are protecting you than a skilled and experienced master locksmith.
Broken/Stuck Key Extraction
There is nothing more frustrating than to go to get into your home or car and your key breaks off in the lock. Often times it breaks off so no part of the key is exposed to help you extract the broken piece of key. Luckily, this type of lock incident is no big deal for an experienced locksmith. Most are very adept at removing broken or stuck keys from a lock. They can even make you a new key once the job is finished. In some instances a broken off key is considered a lock emergency and a locksmith will get to you as quickly as possible to take care of it.
Intercom Systems Installation & Repairs
Here is another locksmith task that many people do not realize you can call them for. Many locksmith companies are experts at installing and troubleshooting intercom systems. They can even suggest to you what time of intercom system will work best for your particular business and show you how to set it up so you can get the most benefit from it.
Peephole Installation
Some of the simplest devices may just be the ones that help keep you the safest. Such is the case with a peephole. Without them you never quite can be sure exactly who you are opening your door for. A peephole lets you identify who wants to come into your home without opening your door a crack to see who it is. Once you open your door even a little bit for the wrong person you can be in big trouble. Locksmiths are experts at installing these handy security devices.
Call Your Local Locksmith Today and See What They Can Do For You

THE SURPRISING BENEFITS OF SWITCHING TO KEYPAD LOCKS
The type of door locks you have for your home or business will greatly influence the level of safety and convenience you can expect from using them. Traditional locks often put you at a disadvantage because they require you to keep up with keys (which can easily be misplaced), and they are often susceptible to being picked or “bumped” by intruders. Lost or stolen keys can pose a significant security risk as well, since any time they’re not in your possession, they have the potential to be copied without your knowledge or consent. Keypad locks are increasing in popularity with both homeowners and business owners due to their remarkable convenience and utility. Below are some of the surprising benefits you can expect to receive when you switch to keypad locks.
1. KEYLESS ENTRY AND EXIT
The convenience of keyless entry is perhaps the most outstanding benefit of using a keypad lock. No fumbling around with keys when you’re trying to unlock your door at night, no calling a locksmith when you’re locked out of your house, no frantic search for your keys when you’re rushing to get out the door, no need for keys, period. Simply punch in your PIN number on the keypad and voila–you’re inside with no fuss and no muss. When it’s time to leave the house, a keypad lock will automatically lock behind you, essentially eliminating that all-too-common scenario where you’re halfway to work and wondering whether you locked the front door or not.
2. TIME-DETERMINED LOCKING AND UNLOCKING SCHEDULES
Time-determined access control, “scheduling”, is one of the most outstanding benefits of using a keypad lock. Business owners can schedule time periods for doors to be locked or unlocked in order to keep strict control over employee access to certain areas of the premises. Homeowners can ensure that their doors are always locked at night without having to make the nightly rounds to do so. The ability to set time-determined locking and unlocking schedules will save both time and money, and it will ensure a higher degree of safety and convenience versus using traditional locks and keys.
3. INCREASED SECURITY
Mechanical keypad locks such as the Lockey 2835 offer a higher level of security in that they are pick proof and bump proof. Traditional locks are subject to both lock picking and lock bumping, the latter of which leaves no signs of forced entry, making it difficult to collect from your insurance company should a theft occur.
4. ADDITIONAL SAFETY FOR KIDS
Keypad locks eliminate the need for your child to keep up with a house key if they come home from school before you come home from work. During a busy school day, it’s relatively easy for a child to accidentally drop or otherwise misplace a house key, and if they’re locked out of the house when they come home from school, this poses a potential risk to their safety. With a keypad lock, all your child needs to have is their personal security code, and they can enter it into the keypad to unlock the front door. Once they’re inside, the keypad lock will automatically lock behind them, ensuring that they’re safe and sound. Keypad locks are beneficial for parents of special needs kids as well; double-sided keypad locks such as the Lockey M210DC provide an additional layer of security in situations where keeping a child inside will keep them out of harm’s way, such as a special needs child who may have the tendency to depart from the house and wander off.
5. BETTER DURABILITY
Traditional locks can get worn down and eventually malfunction due to frequent or heavy use. If you’ve ever had to deal with a lock that requires you to jiggle or shimmy the key just to get it to work, you know how aggravating it can be. Accidentally breaking a key off inside the lock can also be a pain to deal with. Keypad locks are remarkably durable because they don’t sustain the repetitive friction of inserting and turning keys; pressing a few buttons on the keypad is all that’s required to engage the lockset and open the door.
If you’ve been on the fence about whether or not to switch to keypad locks, the above points should serve as a great reminder of their many advantages. When it comes to security, convenience and ease of use, the benefits of using keypad locks are hard to beat.

24 Hour Chandler Heights Locksmith: Lockouts, Why Call a Locksmith
Sometimes lockouts aren’t that bad, right? Well, people don’t normally look at them this way.  A lockout will always be a frightening or upsetting situation, even if it only lasts for a few minutes. No matter what has caused you to get locked out of your property, it is highly unlikely to be a pleasant experience.
Not everyone knows how to handle a lockout and that’s why 24 Hour Chandler Heights Locksmith in Chandler Heights, AZ is the best place to call if you find that you have been locked out. Can’t Find Your Key?
One of the most frustrating things is looking for a key when you have no idea of the last place that you had it. Sometimes you end up looking in some of the weirdest places even when you know there would be no possible way for the key to be there. Ever been in one of those situations? Those searches are some of the most frustrating and overwhelming periods that you have to endure. But, wait there’s more… sometimes you end up finding the keys in your pocket or you had them in your hand all along. That’s just salt in a fresh wound. All that searching for no reason.
If you’re not that lucky, your search may not be fruitful. There are several reasons why you may be unable to find your keys.
You simply lost it
Knowing that the reason for you being locked out is a lost key, is not very comforting. All kinds of thoughts may run through your mind while you are looking for the key or even while you wait to be let inside. What if it falls in the wrong hands? Did someone find it? Will I find it tomorrow or sometime in the future? Is it lost for real? These are just some things you may be thinking. But, with a lost key, the best thing to do is change those locks or have them rekeyed.
It was stolen
If your keys were stolen because someone grabbed your bag, purse or they just stole the keys, treat it similar to lost keys. Make sure you get those locks rekeyed or changed. We’re sure that you do not want to see someone step in your house while you’re there because they used the keys that they had stolen from you. Be proactive and take preventative measures.
You really misplaced it and just cannot find it anywhere
Sometimes your key is only lost temporarily. Whether it is at the bottom of your handbag, stuck somewhere under your car seat, hidden in plain sight or temporarily hidden by someone, you may misplace it and find it in the very near future. But, until you find those keys, you will need to get that door opened.
Are You Really Locked Out?
Sometimes it is really hard to believe that you are locked out. But, as unreal and surreal as it may seem, you may very well be locked out. However, there are a few cases where people think they are locked out but they are able to get inside without seeking professional help.
Don’t let the panic of the moment affect the clarity of your thoughts. It is easy to think ahead and say what you would do when you are in a situation, but once you are actually faced with the situation, those plans seem non-existent. It happens a lot to people who get locked out. Don’t fall in that statistic. If you get locked out, try really hard to think clearly. Think about other points of entry that you may be able to use or other ways that you can get inside without damaging your property.
Before you call for help, make sure that you are truly locked out. It would really be unfortunate that you spent money on a locksmith when you could have simply used a door or window nearby to (safely) enter your property.
Handle a Lockout Like a Pro
Is it really possible to handle a lockout like a pro? What does that even mean? Do you get locked out so many times that you are used to it and know what to do every time? We hope this is not you. Although we don’t want you to panic and get in a frenzy when you get locked out, we certainly don’t want it to be a very regular occurrence for you either.
But, what should you do when you realize that you are locked out? Some people will argue about the order of events but there are some things that are standard, no matter what order you do them in.
Determine the urgency of the situation
Although you may be eager to get inside your home, car or business, it may not be as urgent as you had previously thought. Yes, it will be very inconvenient for you to sit around and wait on a locksmith or someone else to show up with a key, but you may not need to be inside right away.
Check for your spare keys
Many people have spare keys for their locks. In fact, locks rarely come with one single key. If you have a spare key nearby, it should be quick to grab, unless you’re locked out there too. Try not keep your spare keys inside the area that it would be needed to open. Hide it somewhere or give it to someone you can trust for safe keeping.
Call for help
If you cannot get to your spare keys and it seems like you have exhausted all options, it may be time to call your locksmith. In Arizona, there is no better place to call than 24 Hour Chandler Heights Locksmith in Chandler Heights, AZ. We will respond to your request quickly so you can get inside as fast as possible, without having to deal with setbacks.
