Agust D’s 5 year anniversary was yesterday, August 15th, and I feel obligated to gush about all of it. I really don’t feel like any word that spills out of my fingertips will cover any of the surface, but I want to try for him. 

Agust D was the line that I had walked over that brought me to Yoongi’s corner when I became an ARMY in early 2018. I remember listening to the mixtape before reading the lyrics and thought to myself , “damn, this all sounds very heavy.” I then read the lyrics. 3 1/2 years later, we are here, and I still never get out of a listening session with dry eyes.

D-2 caught us by surprise 4 years later in the early months of a global pandemic that plagued us all in every way one can feel fatigued. The timing of such a gift meant a lot, considering it initially was supposed to be at our fingertips in late 2019. But as it’s written in the stars, Mr. SUGA takes his time and every second more he spends on his art, the more it blooms into something beautiful. Much like a reflection of him, but a reflection of all of us, too.

We hear the titles that listeners, other musicians (both at home and abroad), publications, basically anyone who can interpret music and its meaning, refer to Yoongi as; Hand of Midas and king of the Korean music industry, just to be humble and name a couple. It's very exciting as a fan seeing those things. But what I believe to be the most honorary is the way that we all feel comforted by him, especially that side which he shows under the title of Agust D. The different ways we interpret his words and the fact he allows us so graciously to do that. 

Personally, both albums are my greatest comforts. In major part because the man behind it is simply my favorite human being to ever walk this earth, but also equally because of how naturally and candidly he speaks about things that many turn away from. I feel as if lots of artists want to play it safe and focus on brighter subjects because it’s a good way to make listeners feel good, to get away from all of the bad things. All of that is okay, but it feels so much more comforting seeing and listening to someone such as Yoongi just call things by what they are. 

It took me a long time to be able to even say the words “depression” and “anxiety” to myself. I don’t think I understood it fully all that time, but I also felt ashamed and that that should be something I kept in secret no matter how much it hurt me. But hearing him speak about his past and even his present and how he has hopes for his future instilled a type of bravery within me that will absolutely never fade. All because of him. I began to slowly chip away at my walls and exposed bit by bit my vulnerability to which others could see. If I never had a hand in doing that, I don’t even have a clue where and if I would be in this position today. Mentally, emotionally, physically.

The point of all this blabbering is to express immense gratitude towards him and towards any person that has felt the warmth from Agust D, whether it be every album or just a single song, lyric, word. I feel lucky that we can be here with him and I know for a fact he always feels lucky that he can be here with us in more ways than one.

It leaves my heart warm constantly reading about how sought after Yoongi is. Whether it be from Korean or overseas artists interested in collaborations or even now with companies like Samsung specifically wanting him to *literally* orchestrate something special for their brand. His ear for such beautiful and complex music dances across genres so effortlessly, waltzing over every barrier like they do not even exist, and excelling at getting a wide array of listeners to become enchanted.

I think about how hard he’s worked his entire life and how he has persisted so strongly even at the very beginning, where all of this seemed like a dream and that only. I’m so happy for him. I’m happy he gets to see his aspirations come to fruition. I’m happy he gets to grow and cover different areas. I’m happy he gets to do what makes him happy. Truly my boy forever.

I love you, Yoongi boy.
