Universities are not critical to the survival of imperialist states. Momentarily shutting them down and turning part of their infrastructure into "liberated zones" will not hurt the state or impact its ability to wage war at all. Universities are not sites of production, or repositories of arms, or even the formal seats of state power. Acting like the indefinite occupation of universities will spontaneously generate crisis in the imperial core and reduce its capacity to enact genocide is idealism utterly divorced from reality. You are not stopping the bombs by squatting in an admin building for weeks - that is the plain and bitter truth.

jane would actually not like baking with her friends because she is the type of baker to hate when anyone else in her vicinity is doing anything they are on measuring + dishwashing duty ONLY.

Thoughts on Papers Please? Love the game, but it's been bugging me for years that I've not seen anyone actually analyze the "What if 1984 was a videogame about the GDR" part (Or at least I couldnt find anything!)
In general it's kinda fascinating just how commonly accepted it is to portray the GDR as "literally what Orwell wrote about in his hit novel 1984", even in media that leans left, or by people that outright identify themselves as communists. It's like a blind spot in the eye of radical thought, an accepted, undeniable unquestionable truth that East Germany was a totalitarian hell, and denying that reality is akin to supporting The Great Evil that was happening behind those walls
i don't really think there's any connection to the GDR specifically--yes, there's a wall, but the aesthetics of the game are clearly ''eastern european'' in a nonspecific, stereotypical way, and the political situation much more closely resembles post-collapse yugoslavia or post-soviet central asia.
like, it's definitely anticommunist! just not in a measured or considered way, lucas pope just wanted to do the classic literary move of using another culture as essentially a mirror in which to place criticisms of one's own culture--and instead of bothering to do any research, just lazily amalgamated every stereotype that was floating around his head re: ''eastern europe'' as nebulously imagined by an incurious usamerican into one undifferentiated smorgasbord against which to make his criticism of usamerican border policy. the anticommunism is mostly incidental, imo--it's just an artifact of anticommunist tropes being a big part of the ''eastern europe'' of the usamerican cultural imaginary
