Deliverable #6: Concept Art
Environment

<Living room>
The general theme and colour will be dark and cold blue. The Living room will be one of the main scenes for the players to explore and try to find evidence. The setup of the living room will be very clean and tidy because the killer will be cleaning up the house after he poisons Gary.

<Hallway>
This is the scene shows to the player before they enter Simon’s room and found out he is dead. So there will be even darker theme or filter will be applied to this scene to have the player/ audience have the feeling of horror and mastery. We may also do some camera tricks like close up slowly and up and down tilting the camera.

<Entrance>
The entrance will be shown at the beginning and player can get back to this scene through other pathing of the story when they want to. There will be one important evidence hidden in this scene, which is some footprints of the killer at the entrance carpet.

<Simon’s Room>
This is Simon’s room, the room is clean and tidy as a living room because we want to hide the evidence from the player/ Gary. We added that scary toy on the right bottom corner to increase the mastery feelings.

<When heading to the first floor>
Basement door knocking when player facing the stairs down to the basement(first floor).
The sound encourages the player to walk down the stairs and check.

<Simon’s desk>
The computer has many personal pieces of information and possibly some clues of the killer. If users can figure out the password, the player can get access to the computer and see some info about Simon’s company, the case he is working on, and his colleague(Bob, the real killer). The clue of the password is hidden somewhere on the desk, the player needs to move the icon around the surface to get the hints.

<Kitchen>
Everything looks tidy just like any other days but it’s too quiet and Gary senses something.
He called Simon’s name but no one answered. As the player walks around, the hidden clues will appear which move along with the investigation.

<Entrance>
The interactive parts of the film will begin when Gary entering the house. The story is based on a real-life environment of a house. The main theme is criminal scenes so we made the environment look dark and creepy which helps the audiences to understand the background and get more involved in the game.

Figure 2
Interface design
We’ll be using Eko Studio for interactive multimedia videos. We will film the scene in first person point of view and third person point of view. We will use Adobe Photoshop and After Effects and Premiere to edit our videos. We will use a house for a murder scene and we will shoot in front of the house, second floor (room, kitchen, washroom), and garage. All the videos will be edited in dark, medium contrast with cyan colour to create dark, mysterious videos like Figure 1. Most of the places will include ‘magnifying glass icon’. When users click the icon, they will see the detail descriptions to solve the problems like Figure 2.
Interaction design
Figure 3
Figure 4
Figure 5
The story will begin with a short introduction video like Figure 3, showing how Gary gets home. The video will include establishing shot which will show the players where the action is taking. After a short introduction, users will mainly use a mouse-click mechanism to interact with the video based on the platform Eko studio like Figure 4. On top of the video, options will be shown in sentences like Figure 5. Based on their choices, different videos will be played. Moreover, users can have an opportunity to skip the intro video by clicking a button, "play story," on the bottom right corner.
A short introduction scene
A street view of the city in a moving motion as Gary on his way driving home. The car can be parked at the garage or the driveway of the house. (Choosing different parking spot will give different clues). Gary opens the door and there’s the view of the house. Player is able to choose go to the kitchen, the living room, Gary’s bedroom, or Simon’s bedroom. There’s a note stick on the refrigerator that left by Simon, player can click on it and the note zooms in, it wrote “……” which leads Gary to upstairs to either Gary’s bedroom or Simon’s bedroom.
Playing interactive
Player is able to look around the house as they dragging the map. There will be hidden clues all over the place, players need to move mouse around and try to find those clues and click on them to see further details which maybe a dialogue, an image, a clip, an item, etc. The player will be leading the progress of the game, different choices will reveal different possibilities of the story.
Stages
1st stage
The first stage will be inside Simon's room. Gary will wake up with bloody hands. And there is Simon in front of him. He will need to choose textbox showing 'calling a police' or 'investigating by himself.' The goal is to find some evidence in Simon's room.
2nd stage
The second stage will have options to call or meet different suspects. Players can see suspects' response by asking different questions. Players will have a list of sentences to choose from. They will gather different answers based on their choices of questions. The goal is to start the interview with light conversation and ask more detailed question later. Suspects will not answer some questions if they do not want to.
3rd stage
Users can gather more evidence in a house or meet another suspect. They will collect more evidence as much as they can and conclude who's the real murderer.
Ending scenes
There will be three different endings in the story. The perfect choices and decisions will enable users to find a real murderer. Two endings, however, will drive users to the wrong results. One of them will be that the user could not find enough evidence to defend himself. Another one will be that users identified a wrong suspect and a judge decides to release them from custody.

Deliverable #1: Concept Document
Title: Roommate
Subtitle: The mysterious death
Sentence length short description:
This is a story about how a killer who turns out to be a detective and puzzle out how is his roommate die.
Paragraph description:
The story starts on a rainy day, Gary who is a professional killer went back to his house with dirt and blood on his shirt after he finished his job. Later on, he found out that his roommate, Simon, is being killed in his room when he was programming. He has two options, calls 911 or not. If he calls 911, he would have to explain why there is a bloody shirt and the police may found out his guns in the basement. If he chooses not to call 911, then he needs to hide Simon’s body and clean the scene. The game starts from here, the audience becomes Gary and needs to make different choices. The goal is to find out who killed his roommate Simon and why did he get killed. However, the stories end differently depends on the audience choices.
The medium and all related media (e.g. sound, video, web, etc.)
We are using PC/ Internet, First and third person point of view Video as our medium. The strengths of using image and video are that they are more easy to understand and audience will have more presence in the game. Using Video and Image are also making it easier to catch the audience attention. This project needs the audience to feel like they are the main character who looks for the killer, therefore we use video and image as our medium. Our game requires the audience to recall some scenes to have made different choices or decisions, therefore we use Image and video because they are easier to memorize and recall than words.
A couple paragraphs describing the overall concept in more detail, giving us a clear idea of the kinds of interaction, how it may effect the story:
Our concept for this project is to develop a multilinear interactive narrative in a mix of First and Third person point of view. Users will play the main character and create their paths to solve the mystery of the main character’s roommate death. With a single click on a website, users’ experience will be different. Users will see some images and videos while continuing the path. We will hide some hints and clues in those images and videos. Some of them maybe useful to help the users to make to the right decision and some maybe a trap and mislead the users. The path that the person chose might be short, or longer depends on their choices. For the short ones, the users have proceeded with wrong suspects; therefore, they will not get the criminal. However, for the long one, the users got the right suspect, and they will get a chance to catch the criminal. There will be a variety of options that the users can take. Sometimes, it will end up with completely different paths, or it will all lead to the one point. The fundamental purpose of this narrative story is to engage users’ vision and audition with a variety visual images and videos while continuing the story.
Characters:
The main characters
Name: Gary (Player)
Gary is a 30 years old guy and his job is a killer agent who gets commision from the clients’ requests to kill someone else, but his roommate Simon knows him as an animal hunter. Gary is skinny but fast and agile, and his personality is a calm and organized person. He is very sensitive and cautious on his surroundings.
Name: Simon (Victim)
Simon is a 29 years old guy who lives with Gary in his house. He works in the software development company as a developer. He is currently trying to develop a new video program.
Suspects
Name: Suzy (Gary’s girlfriend)
Suzy is Gary’s girlfriend and 3 years younger than Gary. They have been going out with since they are university students. She was living a life of poverty with her mother since young age whose parents are divorced. Because she wants to earn money in a fast and easy way, she dabbled in drug selling.
Name: Bob (Simon’s coworker)
Bob is Simon’s coworker who joined software company with Simon at the same time. He seems to be Simon’s competitor and They form a relation of rival each other who try to show a better result in the company.
Name: Unknown person
There is no any information about him. The only thing we could say is he is trying to revenge to one of character in this story.
Intended Audience/Market
Intended users are people who want to explore the new interactive horror and mystery story. The intended audience is who enjoys reading mystery, detective stories, and movies. This type of people likes to enjoy solving problems with clues. They can put clues together to hypothesize about a resolution. For our story, only with a simple click of a button on a website, users will experience the mystery story by reading texts, visualizing the story with videos and listening to the sounds. There is an existing Sherlock Holmes Steam game which allows users to read the text and find clues by navigating the settings. Sherlock Holmes is a video game; however, we will combine texts, images, and videos to engage users.
User Engagement
We will keep the users engaged by combining text, image, and videos. Also, they will have some options to choose from while continuing the story path. By selecting different choices, they will have different endings. Therefore, in the end, they might or might not get the criminal. The important goal while reading the story is finding out the criminal with different clues. There will be a ticking clock when they are making a choice. By selecting best choices, they will get rewarded for finding out the right criminal.
Overall look/Sound
We are using video, graphics and text on the screen mix together. The overall look will be realistic because we are taking the video by ourselves and we will use some photos as the graphics. The font of the text on the screen use are mainly amazone, allegro and english in vivace to maintain the handwriting look and keep the realistic feel. Our plan for the audio will be light rain in the background with some old classical music to keep the mysterious atmosphere. The characters will not speak. There may be some footsteps sounds whenever the users choose an action.
This is a possible layout for the website.

These are the possible images and videos for the story.

This is a blueprint for the main character’s house.
