RANDY. Cultivated his nerd-dom at a time when star trek games were played printed page by printed page, as you typed responses to the patterns on the paper. Your game was saved using a pattern of dots punched into paper tape. Having rolls of the stuff indicated level of nerdyness. Randy's first computer was a Commodore Kim1. His long history with computers, profound study of Byte magazines, and experience battling the Klingon Empire all add up to make me feel confident that I'm leaving my computer in the hands of the right person. Crossing fingers that I can soon have it back in one healthy and functioning piece. January 30, 2014 Genius Bar, Emeryville, CA

19. WAHLEAH. The coal from her tribe’s land powers Las Vegas, Los Angeles, and many other cities. Problem is coal's one of the Diné nation's most precious resources. And they don't benefit from its extracton nearly as much as the coal company taking it does.  Wahleah is making the transition from battling the Peabody coal company directly to a new role envisioning solar alternatives to strengthen the economy of the Diné nation, Dinetah, in Arizona. “From defending to rebuilding,” as she says. You can support and be inspired by her organizing at blackmesawatercoalition.org

17. RICHARD. He did the hot chocolate 15k yesterday. And his family shop Cafe Santana has my absolute favorite oakland roasted coffee beans. Forget blueglass, sightbottle, and whatever other froufrou bean. Their Columbian & Kenyan is the bizzness. Richard sets up at Jack London farmers market every sunday.

16. ESTEBAN. De Guanajuato, México. We were standing against a connecting door together in a crowded BART car. He wouldn’t sit down until enough seats opened up for both of us.

15. RACHEL.
Before meeting her husband online, she never knew Pescadero existed. He asked her if she'd move there to live with him. She said yes. Happily married for 2 years now and counting.  She left Bakersfield and never looked back. Lucky for me, she pointed me in the direction of the Artichoke bread. Best decision I made in Pescadero. Thank you, Rachel!!!

14. JUDY.
Best smile in Pescadero.
Later I found out she's also Kimberly's mother-in-law. She runs the Stage Road Shop, full of crafty housewares, unique jewelry, textiles from around the world, consignment clothes, and other little goodies.

13. KIMBERLY.
Formerly a K-12 educator and frequent sub, Kimberly is now the creative mastermind behind the lay-out of Made in Pescadero, an impeccably curated shop of wood furniture and other pieces. It's basically a gallery with pieces you can smell, touch, and even lay on.  Her husband's the owner and a woodworker. Visit and Kimberly can give you a low-down of burls, woodworking, and the makers movement.  www.madeinpescadero.com

10, 11, & 12.  KAREN, VANESSA, & JESSICA.
Some of the best people that you can meet while on the road. They brought gifts of fresh coconut water and basked with me in a spectacular sunset that I may never forget. With that  bay area hospitality that I know and love, they invited Aubrey & I over for a most nourishing dinner that night. At that table, it felt like home.  This fabulous crew of educators by day came to Pescadero from SF and Oakland on a queer writing quest. I hope the journey ended up being all that they hoped and needed it to be.
Vanessa hosts a monthly open mic in Oakland. You can check it out here:  http://on.fb.me/1gOYA3e

9. AUBREY. Yes. To answer your question, this IS in a hot tub at the edge of a cliff overlooking the Pacific. It was spectacular. As is Aubrey. She used to be a DJ on her own country music radio station. Now she looks after the people of Chico, CA working reception for the hospital’s emergency room. She also keep them entertained as an actress in many community theatre productions. Our paths crossed just as she was beginning an exciting, new love affair. Hope it continues to make her smile in the days, weeks, months, years to come.

8. ABBY. After many years as a chef for upscale restaurants in Wisconsin, Abby began to lose her passion for the food and cooking. She spent more time busting her butt for fundraisers than she did feeling happy about her work. So what did she do? She left her job and embarked on a cross country road trip. Her end destination is unclear but one thing is for sure, this woman is not afraid to take risks to find joy.

It's mating season at Ano Nuevo. And whether or not the females are in estrus (mating mode), the males are on the prowl and desperate to mate.  They came onto a female elephant seal who couldn't be any less interested, one after the other wriggling up to her, the next one more alpha than the one before.  But this mother elephant seal with her new pup was not having it!

7. ROBERT.  If you are hiking a beach reserve during elephant seal mating season and come across a pile of poop, WHAT ARE YOU TO DO?!?!! Lucky for us we had Robert and his print of scats. Phew! Now we can make sense of the craziness. Stanford professor of Microbiology by day and Año Nuevo docent by other days. Robert is 5 birds away from fulfilling his quest of taking photos of every order of birds in the world.  Always on the go, Robert is teaching a course on wetlands ecology in Brazil later this year. You can revel in his adventures and know how on his website: http://www.stanford.edu/~siegelr

9 Places You Need to Know About in Pescadero, CA
Because some delicious secrets just need to be shared.
1. Mercado & Taquería de Amigos.
Yes, it is a taquería in a gas station. And it's really that good, "with the service and the quality that you deserve."
Tumblr media
Their shrimp taco. It was so juicy and perfect. Deveined and tender with a beautifully brown sear. Popped the biggest, most beautiful shrimp of them all in my mouth before I took this photo.
Tumblr media
2. Pescadero Country Store
The hoity toity sightglass coffee shop next door was closed, but Pescadero country store came to the rescue with reliably good coffee throughout my stay. French Roast or Columbian. And if you feel indulgent, their big chocolate chip cookies aren't bad at all. They'll even warm it up for you.
Tumblr media
They supposedly have great pizzas too, but I came for the coffee. Arizmendi mug representing in Pescadero!
Tumblr media
Don't forget to tip.

3. Made in Pescadero
Just past the strawberry on the phone pole, this store is basically an art gallery that you can smell, touch, and lay on.
Tumblr media
The smell of wood when you walk in is incredible.
Tumblr media
The pieces are incredibly artistic and intriguing. I must have picked up and admired every bowl, puzzle, and jewelry box in the place.
Tumblr media
Kimberly is the store's curator and her husband/woodworker owns the store. She is well-versed in all things wood, woodworking, and makers movement, making a visit to this shop better than most field trips to a museum.  Definitely a gallery worth seeing.

4. Stage Road Shops
Just follow the rainbow flags.
Tumblr media
Judy, the shop's owner, has an undeniable warmth and amazing smile. Her store has crafty housewares, unique jewelry, textiles from around the world, consignment clothes, and other little goodies.
5. Arcangeli Grocery Co.
They are known for their luscious, one-of-a-kind artichoke bread. After consulting with Rachel, I got a hot one ready to eat and a half-baked for later. Forget the souvenir keychain or magnet, best gift you can get someone from Pescadero is a loaf of artichoke bread from Arcangeli's. They open at 10am and put out fresh baked loaves every couple hours.
Tumblr media
Hoping next time I can try their Avocado or Artichoke honey.

6. Duarte's.
Yes, yes, it gets flack for being a tourist trap. And unfortunately they shoot their prices up to reflect that.
Tumblr media
Their artichoke soup though... is as dam yummy as it is ugly.
Tumblr media
Their simple fresh crab sandwich is delectable as well. Watch out for your crowns though. I had to pick some shell out of my mouth.
Tumblr media
I couldn't resist bringing home one of their famous Ollalieberry pies to share. I'd be seeing my niece for her 1 month birthday after all. Genetically modified as an ollalieberry is, that pie was ridiculously good.
Tumblr media
Don't forget to send a gracias, fue muy deliciosa! back to the cooks in the back that make the magic happen.
Tumblr media
*** Those 6 spots are on the same street off the 1. Just turn onto Pescadero Creek Road, pass the exceptional road sign, and turn left onto Stage road. ***
Tumblr media
7. Pie Ranch
Tumblr media
This is also just off the 1. And being a sucker for a great road sign, I had to check it out.
Tumblr media
Fresh produce.
Tumblr media
Yummy farm eggs that I couldn't pass up.
Tumblr media
Supposedly fantastic pies that I'll have to try next time. The volunteer said the lemon buttermilk is her fave.
Tumblr media
I did try a pickle though. A green bean. And it was fantastic.
8. Highway 1 Brewing Company
Curiosity made me pull over to look at the menu. And then that was that.
Hop fried chicken.  When your waiter tells you it's the specialty, who are we to argue?  I tried it. It was juicy, crispy, impeccably cooked. And marinated in beery hops.  Since I am just not a hop kind of girl, it wasn't my fave. But beer drinkers would love no doubt. The mashed potatoes and gravy were outrageous and yummy.
Tumblr media
Tasting flight was fun. And the one in the far right? The beautiful, brown one. They call it Ol' Snaggletooth.  It made this bourbon drinking lady a fan of this brewery.
Tumblr media
9.  The Ocean.
Tumblr media
It's no secret. It'll take your breath away. And off the 1, there are so many pull offs where you can stop and gaze at the waves.  Find your own. Some secrets shouldn't be revealed.

6. DAVID MUSE
Did you know a black woman wrote The Matrix?  She responded to an ad from the Wachowski brothers soliciting sci-fi manuscripts in the 80s.  Years later, The Terminator & The Matrix gratuitously bit her brilliant writing.  Her name is Sophia Stewart and she sued those shameful Wachowski brothers and won.
This was one of many interesting tidbits from David Muse, a sales clerk at Idle Time books in D.C.  A fellow Octavia Butler fan, he talked about wanting to visit the places Butler sets her stories in.  Like when I was reading Parable of the Sower and wanted to make the same stops along the 101 that Lauren Olamina’s crew did.  David agreed to create a U.S. map of places referred to in Octavia Butler novels, kind of like a science fiction fan’s travel guide.  A worthy undertaking that I know will be gratefully received by Butler fans everywhere. I for one am watching for it, David.  Can’t wait!
David’s recommendations for nutrients: Aside from Idle Time books, also must check Second Story Books in D.C., Wax N’Facts in Georgia, and the writings of his extraordinary sister/author Daphne Muse.
