“The Blade of Marmora does not take chances.”
There’s a sentiment I’ve seen circulating ever since season four’s premier that the Blade of Marmora willfully and readily sacrifices their members without giving a damn about their lives, and that Kolivan especially is cold and doesn’t care at all about the Marmorites who die on their missions. This is a sentiment that I strongly disagree with, because I feel that evidence to the contrary is all over their appearances in the show itself, to the point where you have to be willfully ignoring the canon in order to express it.
Let’s look at Kolivan in specific. We’re first introduced to Kolivan in 2x08 when Shiro and Keith visit the Marmora base in the hopes of forming an alliance. Kolivan does not greet them warmly; instead, he greets them professionally, albeit with a slight edge to his voice. He knows who they are, he says, and he affirms what Shiro says when Shiro says that he must know that one of their own sent them. The fact that Ulaz sent Shiro and Keith to the Marmora base is something Kolivan is not happy about. However, more specifically, Kolivan is not happy about the fact that Ulaz died to save Team Voltron:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ulaz broke protocol in two major ways: He divulged information about the Blade of Marmora to Team Voltron, and he also gave his life to save theirs. Kolivan disagrees with both of Ulaz’s actions. He does not feel that sacrificing his own life to save Team Voltron’s was the right choice for Ulaz to make. This is not because he doesn’t see the potential value of Voltron (rather, he agrees that they would be fortunate to have the Red Lion on their side in terms of crisis), nor is it because he has any particular beef with Team Voltron themselves. Rather, it’s because Ulaz was a highly competent, capable agent of the Blade of Marmora. He was a member of Kolivan’s team. And to lose him to what Kolivan feels was a rash, impulsive action is not something that sits well with Kolivan. In fact, one could say that the hard edge that he uses to greet Shiro and Keith here is slight resentment toward them for being there before him, alive and well, when Ulaz had to die in order to make that happen.
That said, it’s true that this is a lot of inference. One could easily argue that Kolivan is just upset because Ulaz divulged the location of the Marmora base. So let’s fast forward to 2x12, when everyone learns that Thace has been compromised, and thus the plan to infiltrate Zarkon’s ship has hit a rather rough snag.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Kolivan is the one who points out that they haven’t heard from Thace—and that, indeed, Thace was supposed to contact them two vargas (hours) ago. Note that when he adds that line about how Thace was supposed to contact them, he looks down and away, breaking eye contact with Shiro. Looking down and away like that, with slightly narrowed eyes, is upset body language. The fact that Thace is out of contact, and that he missed the appointed contact time (when ordinarily he wouldn’t) is clearly upsetting to Kolivan. And it’s not upsetting just because he’s lacking information, but because of what it means. As Antok points out, Thace could be captured. As Kolivan himself suggests, he could have been killed. Kolivan’s upset at the fact that Thace did not contact them when he was supposed to is upset at the idea which he is already thinking about, though hasn’t voiced: The idea that Thace was killed aboard Zarkon’s ship, and that’s why he hasn’t contacted them the way he was supposed to.
And it doesn’t end there. Although the fandom has been insistent that the Blade of Marmora is bad for Keith because they (and Kolivan in particular) will “teach him to sacrifice himself,” what we see in canon is actually in direct opposition to that suggestion. In that very episode, 2x12, the ones who we see calling for reckless potential sacrifice are not the Marmorites, but rather Team Voltron, spearheaded by Allura herself when Kolivan says they must abort the mission because Thace has been lost.

I think it’s not discussed very much just how incredibly tenuous Lotor’s position in Zarkon’s eyes was.
I mean… here’s the thing.
Prorok moved his fleet behind Zarkon’s back. He was scolded harshly about this, but the only actual punishment fell on him when something else seemed to stack against him- when Zarkon and Haggar started the hunt for a spy. And even then, you have to consider that what Prorok was put on probation for was a suspicious move behind Zarkon’s back, but ultimately in the interest of the empire.
Let’s compare that to Lotor. As far as Zarkon knew, as of the beginning of s4e3, the only thing Lotor had done was negligence- not attending to matters like the growing coalition personally but letting the fleet deal with that themselves. He responded to this by stripping Lotor completely of his position and dismissing him in such a manner that it’s entirely likely Zarkon was sending Lotor back into exile.
As soon as the comet ship is revealed, Zarkon launches a bombardment on the prince’s cruiser, and failing that, orders the entire fleet to kill Lotor on sight.
Again, as far as Zarkon knows, this is Lotor’s first and only suspicious action and it is directly comparable to what Prorok did. From Zarkon’s perspective, it is entirely possible Lotor, who presents an earnest-seeming front to him, only wants to prove himself in Zarkon’s eyes.
None of that matters to Zarkon.
As soon as Lotor has power that Zarkon can’t immediately take away from him, Zarkon goes from indifference to “kill on sight.”
Ezor and Zethrid- people who have lived in the empire their entire lives, are nonetheless both shocked by this pronouncement.
People are speculating that Lotor might sell out Voltron to get back in with his father, and this doesn’t just ignore their relationship and Lotor having an obvious grudge on Zarkon much, much larger than any animosity he’s shown toward Voltron- the biggest thing is that Lotor could hand over the Lions to Zarkon on a platter and Zarkon would still most likely have him killed.
This is why Lotor has been smoke-and-mirrors around the fleet: because as soon as Zarkon and Haggar realized he was acting independently of their wills at all, and his “many ideas” were anything actually serious- they tried to murder him where he stood.
So if you were wondering why Lotor nearly flung himself into an unstable star to get away from Zarkon… that’s why.

Why is no one talking about the fact that Lance knows how to do the silk dancing thing? or the fact that he did it from Red and that it was beautiful?

I just love how Zarkon’s been in a coma, messed up, for a little over a month, Haggar works non-stop using science and magic to fix him up, but then the moment she’s like, “Oh shit, that’s right, you’re actually my husband and you saved me once. Get your ass back here and help me again,” Then Zarkon just snaps open his eyes like, “Wifey needs me, let’s go, no more shitting around.”

Amazing.
Space Mall Shenanigans
She had a list.
She had made a list.
That was a level of organization that Pidge rarely worked on. Her mother would be proud. That list included the eight or so food items Hunk needed, Lance’s absurd amount of beauty products, Coran needed new heat capacitors for the Castle engines, Shiro had asked for ‘something nice’ when pressed, and the whole point of the trip was so Pidge could get her computer parts. She had intentions and Keith was off somewhere getting lost. This was going to be great.
Returning to the space mall felt like a foolish maneuver but she figured that as long as she didn’t go fountain diving again, everything’d be square. She wore a hoodie and kept the hood up. Her disguise was impenetrable. She managed to buy Hunk’s needs first at a small interplanetary market that promised to deliver the ingredients to a predetermined location in space where Pidge could pick them up. She got Lance some sort of facial cream and something that might’ve been eyeliner and practiced her shrug in the bathroom mirror for when he complained at her.
