The Monkey Trip

It was only the second time we’d tried mushrooms, and this dose was turning out to be considerably stronger than the one before. Maybe because we’d not been drinking all night, or maybe because the boomers were properly dried, but after the half hour of shivers, muscle twitches and feeling very nauseous, we were all starting to get to grips with this new batch.

It took over when I wasn’t looking or paying attention - suddenly I was elsewhere, the feeling of vines and jungle all around. I felt the sunset beating down on me, and looking around I saw my fellow monkeys (cartoon-like, brown, long arms and tails) in the treetops all around me. I grinned to myself and knew this was all I needed - my monkey family and a sunset, free from danger.

The music (Bonobo, incidentally) niggled at the edges of my attention, like flashes and beats in the dark. I saw my monkeys distracted by it, led down dark paths without realising, being gathered together like so many leaves in a moonlit pool. The rhythm built, I saw us all congregating in a clearing, piled high from the floor to the tops of the trees, the music pulsing and flashing around us, iridescent and alive - fireflies, but moreso… We danced, sang, chanted all together, and as the song crescendoed and dropped - an enormous big cat, magenta and pink, spotted like an ancient jaguar, with two sets of paws outstretched above us, was silhouetted like an omen above us all. Its glowing eyes and thick, chunky features spoke of danger, but it was benevolent - content to draw us all here for fun and then release us.

We scattered into the jungle.
