Weekly Update 6/7/19
Tumblr media
General Studies:
Reading and Writing:
The friends are continuing their research on North America using books, articles, fact cards and videos as sources of information. This week each friend researched a landmark and animal/flower of their choice to add to their continent book. The friends have been learning how to synthesize information and answer their research questions in their own words, to fully understand a concept and not copy or plagiarize.
Some friends also learned how to recognize and use possessives in their reading and writing.
Some friend learned the poem, “Deep Blue Sea” and focused on the sight words, old, fast, then, into.
I took a dive into the deep blue sea,
So many creatures swam past me!
A father seahorse, taking care of his young.
A humpback whale, a lovely song he sung.
A playful dolphin, frolicking about,
A wise old sea turtle had his head poked out.
Then a shark came by with his teeth so white.
I swam so fast until he was out of sight!
Math:
The friends are continuing their unit on weight. They had fun using a balance scale to compare the weight of objects in the classroom. They realized that the scale goes down if the object is heavier thus making the lighter object go up. The friends also weighed objects that are approximately the same, making it more difficult to compare. We also continued our addition and subtraction fluency by solving word problems. They even came up with their own word problems for their friends to solve!
Some friends have been creating their own math games to showcase what they have learned, and to continue practicing fluency.
Ivrit:
This week the 5-7 friends started to create a map of their own pretend Shchuna. They planned and decided where to draw Rechovot (streets), where to place public Benyanim (buildings) such as, Sefria (library) Misada (Resturant ), or Bet Sefer (school). Some added a Gan (garden) vegan Shashueim and (a playground) as well as naming each Rechov (street). Once the plan was finished, they transferred their design on to a good paper, traced the map with a black sharpie pen and colored their map.
Other friends were very busy writing letters to their families and worked on a special book titled “ Ani” about themselves.
Yahadut:
This week in Yahadut, the friends explored Parashat Bamidbar. We spoke about how Hashem instructed the shvatim to travel with the mishkan. We spoke about how each tribe had a flag that represented them. The friends then got the chance to draw their own flag. We have also been preparing for Shavout. We spoke about many different customs that people have to celebrate Shavout. We learned the story of Megillat Rut and found out that her great grandson was David Hamelech, who was born and died on Shavout. Chag Sameach!

Weekly Update 5/31/19
Tumblr media
Reading and Writing:
This week the friends continued working on their non-fiction informational teaching books. They first chose a topic of their choice then gathered information for their research books. We reviewed ways to avoid plagiarism and the friends continued writing facts using their own words. They were also taught how to write an introduction page without giving away too much information. The friends learned the importance of a table of contents and how to create one. They are very excited to share their teaching books with you!
Math:
The friends enjoyed learning about length and height. This week they learned to compare the weight of objects. They were taught key words such as lighter than and heavier than. They enjoyed comparing objects in the classroom (the pen is heavier than a piece of paper) and creating their own silly hypothetical scenario (What would be lighter than a stinky sock?)
Cultural:
The friends have been researching all about North America! They are asking high level research questions about landmarks, flags, and land and water forms. They have been using many materials to research and answer their questions. They cannot wait to share their books with you at Celebration of Learning!
Ivrit:
This week the 5-7 friends started to compose a letter to their families starting with their first draft. They thought of some topics about they would like to write. For example, they listed the people they love, what they like to eat, who they like to play with, and what they do at school. Some friends applied the correct verbs to things we do in various places such as, mitpalelim b Beyt Knesset (pray in synagogue), mesachakim began Hashashooyim (play in the playground), or ochleem Bmisaadah (eating in a restaurant).
Art Class May Reflections: Inspired by Picasso’s Blue Period, students continued and completed their monochromatic portrait paintings. Students’ palettes were limited to blue, white and black, as they learned about adding white to blue to create tints and black to blue to create tones. We discussed how to paint in layers, that each class we’d work from the inside out. The first layer is like the skeleton of the painting, a rough sketch that holds the form. Corresponding layers were likened to the skin, shirt, sweater, then jacket. Each class students were able to assess their progress and continue creating details from general to specific.
We also discussed how the paint brush can work as a two-sided tool. While most paint is applied with the brush, we talked about how the plastic handle can be used like a drawing instrument, that students can scratch into the wet paint. Many students utilized this technique, found it more effective for creating lines and more intricate details. This was our most sustained unit of the year, and to celebrate the completion of these paintings, students had a chance to share and discuss their artwork. I emphasized a positive tone for our critique, and I was impressed by their observations and suggestions for classmates. Students who have Art on Thursday missed a few classes and will continue to complete these paintings in June.

Weekly Update 5/24/19
Tumblr media
Mazal Tov to the friends who received their first siddurim today. We hope that the children will cherish them and use them often.
General Studies:
Some friends are continuing their nonfiction unit. They read informational passages and focused on ways to avoid plagiarism while retelling facts. They also read a book about Memorial Day and discussed the importance of the holiday. In grammar studies, the friends were introduced to pronouns and learned that it can replace a noun in a sentence. They had to wear special detective glasses since pronouns are “nouns in disguise.”
This week the friends focused on non-fiction writing. They began writing a Memorial Day book to help honor American soldiers. They also started their research books based on a topic of their choice. The friends first created outlines that helped them organize information and locate pages in their research materials.
In math, some friends are continuing to learn about length and height with unaligned endpoints. They compared linking cube sticks to objects. For example, “The 6-stick is shorter than my marker.”  This is an introduction to comparing lengths of two objects using a third object. It also provides our friends with a practical context for solidifying their number sense.
In Cultural, the friends learned about land and water forms, locating and labeling them on their North America maps.
Ivrit:
Continuing with Yechidat hashcuna, the 5-7 friends concentrated on identifying public places Bashchuna.
They also named the activities one might do in each place. For example, one  kotev/ koevet michtav (writes a letter) and place it in the teivat doar (mail box). Some friends discovered that the taivat doar in Israel is colored red and not blue.  In addition, they also practiced writing Michtavim (letters) to each other and placed the michtav bamataffe (letter in envelope), addressing the person they wrote to as well as, who is the michtav from. Many friends wrote what they did Etmol (yesterday) and used past tense.
Yahadut:
This week in Yahadut, the friends learned about Parashat Bhar. We spoke about rest and why it is important to rest! We talked about 3 different mitzvot that have to do with resting and taking a break, shabbat, shmita, and yovel. We learned all about the stories of Rabbi Akiva and Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai and their connection to Lag Baomer. They greatly enjoyed celebrating Lag Baomer with a classroom picnic and a day at the park on Thursday.
