i have an asl interpreter for one of my classes rn and she kept being like thank you SOOO much when all i did was a) provide a chair by the student she works with and b) provide a lab coat for her and a spot to store it in case a student spills something on her during the lab. that was it. the bare minimum. like ummmm it is the LAW that I accommodate things like this??? what are the other instructors doing???
i am hoping she is just new to this job and its not like. that other people in the department are being mean to them.

what ive actually done so far is like:
-be honest with my students about how shit sucks and talked through my general plan should we see like, ICE agents in the building. (ive found that this is actually useful! but only because they know you are acknowledging and thinking about how shit sucks also. And that feels better than ignoring it)
-show faculty an unusual amount of grace. my usual stance is extremely confrontational (im one of the people who shows up to meetings and calls advisors abusive) but rn no one is getting money and no one is having a good time. if i need something I am just showing up to their office in person and making it as painless for them as possible.
-i am usually pretty chill with students but also showing students a lot of grace, esp with things in my power like deadline extensions or absences. currently working on a way to check in on a few particularly vulnerable students without being annoying. (suggestions welcome?) i only see them once a week in the lab i teach. so. hm.
having a lot of feelings about being an academic in the US this week.
theres always a lot of liberal posturing re: resistance and it’s like. what is actual USEFUL to be doing right now?

some friendly advice as new areas of the country start having long-term wildfire smoke problems:
Don’t do extended exercise outside. If possible, don’t do extended work outside.
Shower once you’re back inside to wash the particles off your skin/hair. This helps to keep you from inhaling it when out of the smoke.
Hot showers and steam help sooth inflammatory airways (nose/throat)
Wear an N95 mask when outside for extended periods to help keep from inhaling smoke. Look at what size particles and how much the mask will protect against (ie 95% vs 99%).
Get an air filter for your office/room/house. They’re in the $50 range online (price May vary in person). If you can’t get one, look into how to make a Corsi-Rosenthal box (box fan, two air filter frames and lots of duct tape).
If you have an A/C (window or central air), turn the fan from “auto” to “on”. This will make sure your air is still being filtered even when the cooling part of the system is not on.
Drink water. (I mean you should try to do this anyways)
Important to note: you may feel side effects slower than others. You may feel them quicker than others. Sore throat, sinus infection, upper respiratory infection, itchy eyes, pink eye, exhaustion, difficulty breathing— these are all common side effects of prolonged smoke exposure.
The dangerous part is that in areas of high concentration, the particles are small enough to be absorbed into your bloodstream. So please, do what you can to help protect yourself and friends/family. Even when you aren’t feeling it, it’s affecting you.

Jokes aside the horror of this is sinking in. Bro these two drugged up carcasses are the most powerful men in the world. They control the world

I am Palestinian and originally from northern Gaza. I have received many messages asking me to share their verified campaigns and to communicate with them. We are in dire need of your support and solidarity in these difficult times. Each of us has a story worth hearing, and many of us are living under extremely tough conditions. Your support and solidarity can change many lives and give them hope. We appreciate any help you can offer, as we need every hand extended to us. it pisses me off when people won’t help undergrads with things just because they “should be easy.” we have a poster printer. It’s not hard to use but it’s a little fiddly and not intuitive. it literally takes 5 minutes to go and show a student the right settings to use. they are presenting research done in your lab!!! help em out!!!!

a labmate was looking for some samples the professor had left in the freezer. Couldn’t find them. checked every shelf. I was like. “what did she say the label was?” labmate says “midgut and hindgut tissues”
i look. there is a box labeled PROF. MGHGT
it was that box ❤️
#grad school#sometimes we must ask#would they have actually labeled it properly?#and the answer is absolutely fucking not
