Vampire Academy books: what do you do when your best friend since childhood gets a boyfriend and like, you're not in love with her and you understand he fulfils a part of her life you can't but at the same time you can feel her slipping away a little and it's just sad? And you don't want to be sad because she's so happy but you feel like you're losing part of your friend's life and you don't really know how to feel about it.

And I think really my favourite thing about vampire academy is that Rose is constantly having a horrible time because horrible things keep happening and she responds to them instead of the narrative acting like it's just set-dressing. People die and it haunts her, she has to kill her enemies and it's never seen as a victory, it's always a terrible thing she was made to do too young. She never stops being scared of how dangerous everything is, she's trained to be a good fighter but she's terrified anyway and she fails a lot, and there's this atmosphere throughout of powerlessness and of loss and grief and fear, and of the world being much bigger than she really understands and the confusion and anger of being left in the dark. It's a surprisingly dark mood of worldbuilding and I really appreciate it.

Do you think rose hathaway still stands out as a protagonist in this more girlboss era of ya/na?

I think she could stand out especially in this unimaginative era of heartless girlbosses, to whom all their world bows to.

She is what we'd call "girlboss" back then, but not in the modern flawless/performatively flawed way. She's badass, but she has plenty to learn, and during her books she grows. Not just in Strigoi-killing skills, but she matures as a person. She helps to change her world without bending its natural laws or incredibly convenient wide-spread waves of understanding and love for one's neighbour.

That's more than I can say about certain "strong" heroines of more contemporary literature.

When Scarlett Johansson joined the Marvel universe all the way back in 2010, she did not have the ability that current actresses in the franchise have now and that is the ability to be seen as a valuable member of the team as opposed to an accessory.

My girl was being sexualised at every single interview, being asked if she wore underwear under her black widow suit and even being groped by interviewers. Natasha’s background was only slightly explored and her fighting style consisted of wrapping her legs around men’s heads in order to further appeal the male audience.

Yelena has the story arc she has and the ability to grow as a character because Scarlett fought for her to when she was producing the Black Widow movie. It makes me so upset that she knew she would never get the superhero experience that the men around her had, so she put aside her own spotlight in order to give Florence the standing that she couldn’t have.

I will not accept Natasha slander because Scarlett put everything she had into that character for a decade and had to go through so much just to be a part of that franchise.
