I know I'm in a lesbian relationship because my partner and I've been living in separate countries for one month (one down, four to go) and when I mentioned how good we're doing they just said "it feels like I've been through 5 hero's journeys"

something I’ve noticed as I begin to include more “realistic” communication in my written work - particularly when it comes to boundaries and consent - is that after a while, it sort of rewires your brain a bit. And rather than feel turned off by it, you actually start to find it more attractive than the alternative.
Human communication is hard. I say this as someone who basically had to learn it from scratch as an adult. Expressing challenging emotions mid-hookup? Setting a hard boundary on what you do/don’t want? That shit can be awkward, and sometimes, even a “mood-killer” - if you’re thinking of “mood” as the constant presence of undisrupted, purely-libidinous thoughts.
But one-note human interactions don’t exist. We are complex creatures; there are always going to be mood fluctuations and energy changes in any given moment. And that was something that was very important for me to realize - in my writing, but also, in my personal life. I had to learn to make space for the full spectrum of human emotion in my sexual and romantic interactions (even for spur-of-the-moment hookups where “spontaneity” is a large part of the appeal.)
But I did. And now…I don’t know how I ever lived without it, to be honest. Because in my mind, introducing communication serves the following purposes:
1) Makes sex/romance interesting and varied, instead of some one-dimensional expression of “carnal desire” you read in shitty pulp novels.
2) Normalizes boundaries and consent, which (obviously) makes sex a lot more healthy and enjoyable in the long run.
3) When the hard stuff is over with, you can get back to it - and it’s literally way more intense when you do! Because not only have you strengthened that connection with your partner, you also get the catharsis of reuniting after the fact. And in a literary context at least, the laws of tension/release create a much more fulfilling end result than just rawdogging it in absolute silence for 10 minutes.
Obviously, there’s a time and a place for unbridled lust in fiction (even in real life, if you’ve communicated beforehand.) And I’m not saying every sexual/romantic interaction has to devolve into a round table discussion on feelings and preferences. I guess I’m just glad that I’ve found a place for human complexity in these moments, and even grown to enjoy its presence. Because as someone who used to have a lot of non-sober sex in an effort to “keep the good times going”……..it’s boring. And I’m a lot happier now that I’ve realized how genuinely sexy using your words can be.

Quick reminder: Failure is not a world-shattering event. It's just one stage in a cycle. Like winter, it comes and it kinda sucks. But spring is never far behind, and before long there are new beautiful things growing from the lessons you learned in your failure.

queer indie and self-published books to read during pride month
It’s the end of May, which means Pride Month is quickly approaching and because of this many creators are sharing queer book lists. Don’t get me wrong, I always love and appreciate people sharing queer books, but I have to admit that it upsets me a little that most people only share a few books, and it’s always the same popular (and traditionally published) ones.
The indie and self-published community offers a great range of identities and diversification that you often can’t find in traditionally published books, but because of people’s prejudice against these books, or because of their laziness in trying to find them, indie books often go unnoticed.
So here I am, asking you to consider indie and self-published books for your reading during Pride Month (and every other month of the year).
Brace yourself, because I’m about to give you a long list of books, divided by identities.
