Get to really intimately know our fears because that’s how she ultimately gets to live a joyful and happy life because she really takes it on and talks about her fears and admits to people that she’s scared. We gotta do that. Not just get intimate with our own fears but the fears of the people that we love. That’s how we really build connectedness. Dani Clayton really crept up on me. I can’t believe how much I love her. On paper, the high-strung American with a babysitter’s club aesthetic plopped down in a BBC period drama setting should be so fucking annoying, and it’s obviously written into the script that she’s meant to toe that line and yet come off as endearing rather than obnoxious – but the fact it works, that really she really is so charming despite having all these “annoying” qualities, is both a minor miracle and the entire point. 

The way she’s written, and the way Victoria plays her with such groundedness and honesty, really demonstrates how women who are perceived as uptight or a buzzkill or the mom friend have a reason for being that way. They’re not haunted the way Dani is in a literal sense, but people behave the way they do because it’s how they’ve managed to keep themselves safe. Behavior is a survival strategy, and Bly Manor does an excellent job of showing this with every character (Jamie’s devotion to her plants, Hannah putting everyone else first because she’s afraid of choosing her own happiness and also the literal survival strategy of refusing to accept that she’s dead, etc). It feels particularly impressive with Dani because her coping strategies manifest in ways that are traditionally maligned as weak or annoying. She’s tightly wound, she has that clenched-fist teacher posture, she has anxiety attacks. She gets a bad feeling about things sometimes, and she’s not quite sure what to do about it. 

Characters like her are rarely the central figure of the group. They’re the secondary character, the comic relief. At best, they’re Barb from Stranger Things – endearing and memorable, but not the kind of person you build a story around. And yet here Dani is, with the story revolving around her – the gothic romance story, no less! And because she’s the protagonist, because our empathy lies first and foremost with her, the way she copes with everything feels relatable and admirable and brave. 

As someone who has always been the awkward, nervous rule-follower of the friend group, I find this genuinely validating. And the way Jamie loves her not just in spite, but because of her awkward, high-strung behavior – that’s the dream, right? It’s total wish fulfillment for those of us who identify with Dani’s anxiety or weirdness or whatever. And not just being loved, not just being an object of affection, but having someone who wants to be loved by us; who finds our affection a worthy and valuable thing. 

Anyway. The point is that I’ve never seen a protagonist quite like Dani before, at least not written with such an abundance of love and sincerity and validation. She’s a total dweeb, and we can laugh at her and laugh with her, but she’s also the big damn hero whose weapons are kindness and an earnest desire to help people. That she creeps up on you the way she does, worms her way into your heart the way she does, is the result of well-executed character writing. We’re meant to fall in love with her in this way – gradually, and then all at once, which is also the way the story itself plays out and takes hold of us. I love it and I love her.
