Dear Jay,

I do not know what this means but I can surmise that it is bad. However, what I had intended with my original comment was to make sure she was safe physically, I have no reason to assume her Tom was like mine in that respect, he’s likely just a terrible person. But many people assumed that about my relationship… It’s just worth being sure.

As for finding her so engaging, I’ve no doubt she’s a wonderful girl but make sure you’re willing to not just accept her as your ‘golden girl’ but as a real, messy human. How will you handle it when she’s angry? Hurting? Upset? And not in a pretty, neat way but in an intensely human, raw, and ugly manner. She deserves someone who will see her at her worst and try to understand what she’s seriously expressing, not romanticise her complexity.

The loneliness is a familiar feeling, it's almost comforting at this point. You help fill the void, even on the worst days, but truly I think I need to get out there more. I had more 'friends' before the divorce, but we both know what a terrible scandal that became, even Jordan's become more distant in the aftermath I wonder how many of them actually cared for me. I heard how you’ve been caring for Pammy, and even though she’s not my own daughter I’d like to thank you for that - it’s not easy to care for a child, and yet you seem so willing to give so much to her. It’s truly admirable. Though I have learnt that you must care for yourself in all of this, else you’ll burn out which won’t be good for anyone. You need to prioritise yourself.

I did not have any suspicions about Jay's sexuality, no. If I'm honest, I was rather too occupied with what was going on in my own life to consider his sexuality. It was rather a surprise when I found out he engaged in relationships with other men. Though I was of course very happy for he and Nicky when they were still together (and deeply upset when he decided to run away home to the Midwest instead of facing his fear of commitment).
