Guess who’s my new favourite FF villian, yup, Ardyn it is!

I finally got myself to play ff15 (late af I know), immediately fell in love with the game and ended up crying waterfalls at the end. I LOVE the chocobros (anyone hurt them I’ll stabbu) but the one character who caught my attention the most is Ardyn, especially after finishing the DLCs, episode Ardyn gave me so much feels and a deeper understanding for the character.

About Ep.Ardyn time periods

Episode Ardyn is supposed to take place about 30 years before the main events of Final Fantasy XV that happen during M.E.756. Indeed, the game possesses its own time measurement: “M.E.” is the abbreviation for “Modern Era” and its year “1” corresponds to the moment when the four countries of Eos decided to use the same calendar. The game ends in M.E.766, when Noctis finally fulfills his destiny.

Knowing this and thanks to various sources like Ultimania guides, we can try to figure out the different time periods appearing in Ep.Ardyn’s trailer:

Somnus

2000 years before FFXV

It is precised in FFXV Official Works that Ardyn was supposed to become King about 2000 years ago, so of course his little brother lived during this period too.

Verstael & Ardyn

34 years before FFXV, M.E.722

Ardyn joined Niflheim 34 years before FFXV according to the Ultimania guide, so Verstael must have found him around M.E.722.

Regis & Glaives

Around 20-15 years before FFXV, probably M.E.741

The Regis that appears in the trailer isn’t the one from the time period where Verstael found Ardyn: at that time Regis should have look more like the first one on the picture below when he was traveling with his friends in M.E.725, younger and without beard (and even if Regis’ story in A King’s Tale isn’t canon, his design must be). In fact, the one from the trailer is closer to Regis’ look in Kingsglaive in M.E.744 or when he introduced his son to Ignis in M.E.740. The problem is that Regis’ model isn’t consistent. For example, at the moment where he flees Tenebrae with Noctis, Regis has longer hair and bushier beard in Botherhood than in Kingsglaive for the exact same scene. This appearance, closer to Regis’ one at the end of his life, is also used for the Dawn Trailer where he’s crying because of Noctis’ fate, implying that this scene is supposed to take place in M.E.741 when Noct has been chosen by the Crystal.

Regis’s model changed a lot during FFXV production, from the one of Versus XIII to the one we know today. It seems that the appearance where he has longer hair and beard was the one still used until early 2016, a few months before the game’s launch, explaining why you can still find this appearance in other media like Brotherhood or A King’s Tale. But in FFXV itself, the regular model for the younger Regis is now the one from Noct’s souvenir, Ep.Ignis and Ep.Ardyn Trailer.

While we can’t only rely on Regis’ model to define precisely the time period, we can nonetheless find more informations in the trailer: at the beginning of it, Ardyn seems to arrive in Insomnia for some kind of celebration as confetti falling around him is suggesting. I can see only two options: Noctis’ birth in M.E.736 or Noctis’ approval by the Crystal in M.E.741. And I believe it’s quite the second one. Because why would Ardyn come for Noct’s birth? Even if he’s part of his family, he’s only a child… On the contrary, he has every reasons to come for the Chosen King, the only one able to offer him a satisfying revenge and even death. Moreover, in the trailer Regis is helped by the Kingsglaives he has established in that same year, M.E.741, adding weight to this theory. Besides, as mentioned before, the model for Regis used in the trailer is the same as the one used in Ep.Ignis’s scene which happens only one year before Noct being chosen by the Crystal, when he and Ignis first met in M.E.740. For all these reasons I believe Ardyn and Regis confrontation takes place in M.E.741, on the occasion of the revelation of Noctis’ destiny.

Ardyn’s arrival in Insomnia

The trailer showed us various events that don’t correspond to the same time periods, so we’re probably gonna see (and maybe play) different of them. I truly hope it’ll be the case because otherwise it would mean that SE isn’t able to keep FFXV’s lore coherent and it would be truly scarry!

About 2,000 Years Ago

Dramatic Population Decrease Due to Parasitic Illness

An illness caused by plasmodium parasites spreads, and the world’s population decreases dramatically. A personage from the clan that had been given power by the gods began to treat the plague with a unique ability, but as a result the illness came to abide in his own body. Though this person was originally meant to be chosen as King by the Crystal given by the gods, because of the sickness residing in him, he was rejected by the Crystal and the throne went to his younger brother. 

To protect the Crystal and the Ring of the Lucii that proves kingship, the younger brother chosen as King founds the Kingdom of Lucis. To prepare for the “Calamity to Come” that the gods had told him of, and to pass on all of his power to the True King the Crystal will choose. Meanwhile, the elder brother who had been driven from the throne had become immortal from the illness’s effects, and lived on despite execution. He who gave everything to treat the plague resents his rejection by the gods and Crystal, and resolves to have his revenge at the time of the “Calamity to Come.”

I never felt so sad to accept such reality related to a videogame, probably because FFXV has never been “just a videogame” to me. I grew up with the desire and hype for the former FF Versus XIII for years, I cried, screamed, jumped for the happiness everytime a new trailer was released. I got to a point where I felt so honored to be hired and work on the promotion of FINAL FANTASY XV as Gladio since July 2016. I met, worked and had dinner with all the team, Tabata San included several times and I started to feel like part of this family. Just like everyone of us felt when we met him, with his eyes full of love and gratitude for the community.

Even if I worked for them, still… I can’t barely imagine how hard has been all the work behind FFXV including all the decisions. This is why I am accepting in my heart Tabata SAN’s decision since I have all my love and respect for his work, and if we got to this point it means it was the right thing to do.

No matter what, HE is a HERO to me, an inspiration that gave me so many emotions not only as director but as human being, always extremely available, humble and gentle no matter how tired he was.

I will always do my best to create FFXV content, not even for work as professional cosplayer but as devoted fan / artist as a tribute to a masterpiece that will be eternal in my heart. ❤️

I wish I will be able to give you a hug for all my gratitude again one day. Thank you again for making me feel part of your family Tabata-San, I will always respect, support you and STAND BY YOU.
