i arrive at the gay bar in full butch getup and i look like super hot like trust me and i start buying chocolate milk for the femmes at the bar…..between my striking good looks and my generosity concerning tasteful dairy products i have impressed them greatly and after an hour of chatting I make my move. i reach into my pocket and remove a large, gorgeous lichen affixed to a piece of bark from its protective herbarium packet that I have concealed in my pants pocket. “it’s a symbiotic relationship between a fungus and an algae,” i begin,

Happy International Women’s day! This one is dedicated to all the lovely women and mothers out there, and especially to some of my favourite ladies who inspire me to write better every day! I hope you enjoy this @rayshippouuchiha @naferty @reioka @allthemarvelousrage !
Tony was her son by birth, but Maria knew that he was never really hers.
After all, Maria had never wanted children.
She was not the mothering type. While other women cooed and awwed at children that ran past, Maria cringed at their high pitched wails and screams, at their mess. Maria always had to stifle a yawn when other women bragged about their children.
Even after Howard had hinted insisted that Stark Industries would need an heir, Maria stood firm. She didn’t want a child, nor did she want to disrupt the life she currently had.
No matter how vain she knew she sounded, she liked her parties and her garden teas. She enjoyed shopping whenever she wanted, wherever she wanted without having to cart around a screaming baby.
So when she found out that she was pregnant, Maria sobbed.
Her life as she knew it was over.
Howard was pleased. The Stark name would continue, and his legacy would continue.
Maria stared at herself in the mirror, hands running over the small bump growing in her stomach.
How awful was she, wishing that this child didn’t exist?
For the next few weeks, Maria walked around in a daze. All the wishes of congratulations passed by in a blur, and it was like she was on autopilot as she thanked them.
It was only once she visited Peggy and Angie, that Maria broke down into tears.
I don’t want this, I don’t want them.
Peggy and Angie startled as they stared at each other before Peggy pulled Maria into a hug.
“Have you told Howard?” Peggy hesitated. “You know, if you really don’t want a child, you have other options-”
“Howard is so excited.” Maria cried. “He’s already bought stocks you know? Not even a few months old, and Howard has already started to buy an entire portfolio. He’s picked out every shade of paint possible for the nursery and is already scheduling interviews for a nanny-”
Angie inhaled sharply. “Maria-”
“I’m doing this.” Maria decided, voice hoarse. “I’m doing this.”
Who knows, maybe after all was said and done, she would want this more than anything.
When Tony was born, wailing as the nurse swaddled him in a blanket, tears streaked down her face. She hugged the small bundle to her chest. He was tiny, but had a strong heart, said the doctor. The nurse smiled and closed the door softly behind her, leaving the pair alone.
As Tony snuffled and wrinkled his nose, Maria hugged him close to her chest.
“I’m sorry. I’m sorry.”
Even as she stared down as his perfect face, with the brownest eyes she’d ever seen, her eyes, she couldn’t help but feel numb.
She was supposed to feel something wasn’t she? This was the part where she- where mothers were supposed to feel that overwhelming sense of love and awe and-
Anything but this.
Maria hugged her son to her chest, swallowing as she stared at the empty hospital room. Howard couldn’t even be bothered to cancel his meetings this week.
We’re so close to a merger Maria, I can’t afford to cancel when we’re so close. You understand don’t you?
Peggy and Angie threw the doors to the hospital room open, panting as they rushed into the room. “We got here as fast as he could Maria, oh- he’s beautiful.”
Maria smiled. “Hold him for a while won’t you?”
Angie beamed as she carefully lifted Tony into her arms, nuzzling his soft head with a smile. “Oh Tony, how are you darling? You’re a gorgeous little thing aren’t you?”
Maria watched Peggy and Angie take turns holding Tony, something settles in her chest. This is how it’s supposed to be. This is what Tony deserves.
That’s what mothers did didn’t they? Do what was right for their children?
Maria might not be the best mother in the world, but she would do her best for her son.
“I want you to adopt him.”
Peggy and Angie swiveled their heads, eyes wide in shock. “What?”
“Please,” Maria whispered, resolve giving her strength. The moment she saw them together, deep down in her heart, she knew. “I know that you’ve both talked about wanting a child. You’ll take care of him more than I or Howard ever could.”
“Maria-”
Maria stared out the window.”The last few months, he could only talk about what Tony would be for the company you know.Tony will be fantastic, just you wait and see Maria, he’ll bring this company even further into the future, and bring the Stark name into the future-”
She clenched her fist. “I never wanted children, I still don’t to be honest. I know it makes me sound awful, but- please.”
Peggy and Angie glanced at each other. Peggy settled Tony in her arms, while Angie clasped Maria on the shoulder. “You know we’d love to take him in Maria, but Howard.”
Maria sat up straight, turning to look them in the eyes. “I can deal with Howard. Just promise me…you’ll take care of him. Sing him to sleep every once in a while. Take him to the park. Let me visit him, I’ll take him out to tea. You both know that Howard never wanted a son. He only wanted an heir. I may not love him like what a mother should, but I want him to live a normal life.”
Peggy stared at Maria, and Maria could tell that she was scrutinizing her state of mind. However, Maria was firm, and for the first time in her life, she had never been surer of anything.
Peggy gently placed Tony back into Maria’s arms. “Let me and Angie talk for a moment Maria. We’ll be right back.”
As Peggy and Angie left for the hallway, Maria swayed Tony gently in her arms. She brushed a stray hair away from his face. “I know they’ll take some time to consider, but I know they’ll say yes. I could tell from the moment they saw you they fell in love with you little Anthony.”
I love him, thought Maria, enough to let him go.
