John: Uh, this is John Lennon talking to you from the heart of the West Side of New York in an interview exclusive — full interview — with brand new New Yorker Sean Ono Lennon, spelled S-E-A-N. Okay? Now tell me Sean, what’s your first impression of New York? Sean: [Baby noises] John: I see.
An interview John did with his son, Sean, circa 1976. The Lennon family had just gained permanent residency in New York. Sean had been born October of the year prior. I apologize for the background music - I didn’t add that. My favorite quotes/partial transcript:
John: I was wondering if the fiscal crisis of New York had any —
Sean: [Baby noises]
John: Uh-huh, that’s the one I was talking about, yes.
Sean: [Baby noises]
John: Exactly!
[…]
John: I see you know which subjects to avoid and which not to. Very sensible. Must be running for office, is that what it is?
Sean: [Baby noises]
John: It is exciting, isn’t it? And such a strain on the - on the old ticker. [Laughs]
[…]
John: Oh, he’s smiling, folks.
John: [Very softly] Perhaps you’d like to tell me your favorite color?
Sean: [Baby noises]
John: That’s not good enough, I’m afraid.
Sean: [Baby noises]
John: [Normal voice] No interesting color.
[…]
John: Will you be doing any concerts while you’re staying - while you’re here?
Sean: [Baby noises]
John: Yes, I thought so. You haven’t got the group together. I understand completely.
Sean: [Baby noises]
John: Uh, I heard you were backstage at the [Bob] Dylan concert, or was that just a rumor?
Sean: [Baby noises]
John: An outright lie? My goodness.
[…]
John: I was wondering what it’s like being the son of such astoundingly famous, beautiful, and talented parents as John and Yoko? I wonder what it’s like…
Sean: [Baby noises]
John: Oh, I see. I mean, could you - could you give me —
Sean: [Slight cry]
John: Ah, mhmm, yes - more full… background into that?
Sean: [Baby noises]
John: I see you’re very fascinated by this - this black box that I’m interviewing you with - this tape recorder. In fact, it seems to inhibit you a little bit. I mean, are you conscious - or self-conscious about the tape recorder?
Sean: [Baby noises]
John: Well, he’s turned his head away because he got very paranoid [laugh]. It’s alright, you know. Just think of it as a very dark relative.
[…]
John: Elton! What about Elton [John]? He’s your godfather!
Sean: [Fussy baby noises]
John: Do you want to tell me how it is to have such a famous godfather?
Sean: [Begins to cry]
John: Well, I know you haven’t been able to see him yet. That’s because he can’t come into the country until January!
Sean: [Continues to cry]
John: Well, let’s just get him on the phone. Get his ass over here.
Sean: [Fussy baby noises]
John: Well, I think at that point we’ve left the interviewee because he obviously was getting violent at the thought of not seeing Dean Martin and all those people in their prime, as it were.

About Paul saying if John were gay he would have made a pass at Paul, I wonder whether he was trying to squash rumors about the two of them while at the same time trying to avoid interviewers possibly giving him a list of every man John ever met and asking if he thought John had been interested in this or that guy? I read it as him jokingly shutting down the conversation.
You’re absolutely right, but this is one of the many ways Paul avoids John’s argument, because he can’t face his feelings towards him and share it with the public, he’s very introvert from this point of view. When it comes to his relationship with John, Paul either jokes, shut it down, or he includes other people in the discussion so he’s not “alone” in sharing his feelings towards him.
I’ll make some example: Mark Lewisohn understood this behaviour and he wrote it in his book “All those Years: Tune In.” At one point, when Paul is talking about John, Mark Lewisohn adds a note and in the footnote:
“Paul sometimes says ‘we’ in interviews when he means ‘I’.— Mark Lewisohn, footnote in The Beatles: All These Years (Vol.1) – Tune In.”
This is one of the tricks Paul uses to hide himself behind other people when he has to mention his feelings towards John. Most of the time he includes George Harrison. Let’s read this line from the Anthology, in which Paul talks about Stuart Sutcliffe and adds that they were kind of jealous of him:
“When he [Sutcliffe] came into the band, around Christmas of 1959, we were a little jealous of him; it was something I didn’t deal with very well. We were always slightly jealous of John’s other friendships. He was the older fellow; it was just the way it was. When Stuart came in, it felt as if he was taking the position away from George and me. We had to take a bit of a back seat.”- Paul McCartney - Anthology
Actually, George Harrison never gave a damn about Stuart, and he was never jealous. That’s Paul hiding himself behind the “we” pronouns because he’s not capable to say that HE was jealous of Stuart and HE was jealous of John’s friendships.
Another example:
“The theory is that when John went off to Spain on holiday with Brian, that’s what it was all about - John trying to get his position clear as the leader of the group. Also, I’m sure Brian was in love with John. We were all in love with John, but Brian was gay so that added an edge.” Paul McCartney - Anthology
“We were ALL in love with John”. Who? Who are you talking about Paul? Who are the others?? None, none else was in love with John, beside you.
There are plenty of these examples, I’ll show you other two just to show you that it’s not a coincidence, it’s Paul’s typical way to talk about John when it mentions his feelings and his love towards him.
This is from The Anthology, when they broke up:
“I started thinking, ‘Well, if that’s the case [not getting back together], I had better get myself together. I just can’t let John control the situation and dump us as if we are the jilted girlfriends”. Paul McCartney – Anthology
He always seems to speak on behalf of other unspecified people.
This is from Bob Spitz book about The Beatles, same period when they broke up:
“John was in love with Yoko and he’s no longer in love with the three of us. Paul McCartney.
No longer in love with the three of us.
When Paul appeared on the Howard Stern Show last year he did another of his tricks. At one point they were talking about ‘Too many people’ and the interviewer literally said: “John is the love of your life” and Paul got all shocked and defensive and started stuttering ”no no no I mean yes, i loved him but you know WE HAD ALL THOSE WOMEN!!”. He used a defense mechanism. An anon, regarding this fact, asked me my thought on his reaction and I replied here, describing in details all the 5 common mechanism people use which are studied in Psychology. Mark Lewisohn, studying the Beatles and Paul, understood very well his character and his attitude when he deals with his feelings towards John. He uses the ‘we’ instead of ‘I’ to hide himself behind other people, and when I read his comment in the footnote I was happily surprised because it confirmed my theory. What happened at Howard Stern Show is no different.

To lose your mum at fourteen is not easy. It was very difficult for a few years – just trying come to terms with it. But then I found music… and John. – Paul McCartney (2019)

For all of its CGI/acting weaknesses, Sharkboy and Lavagirl really captured the essence of being 8-11 and absolutely feral about it. I haven’t encountered another movie so thoroughly beloved and joked about by people my age.

YES YES YES! I labelled myself as bi at age 14 and it wasn’t until I was 18 that I realised actually, I’m pre much gay. And yknow what? That’s completely okay! The only thing I regret is not exploring the possibility earlier because I put myself through some heartache and confusion I could have avoided. ITS OKAY TO NOT KNOW YOUR SEXUALITY OR GENDER, and if you bounce between some for a while, it’s okay as long as you’re happy
i hope the younger lgbt+ youth (12-16) on here knows that it’s okay to play with identities. it’s okay to try out a label for a month, decided it’s not for you, and then pick up another one. you aren’t “betraying your community”, you’re figuring yourself out at an age that- you know- you figure yourself out in! do what works for you. if you don’t like labels, ditch them! if a label resonates with you deeply, try playing around with it! it’s normal. don’t be afraid.
