How do you think feline retractable claws would work on a humanoid hand? Thanks for the help ❤️
alright, finally clearing out my askbox backlog! thanks for your patience!
a good start is this post i reblogged a while ago that has some examples of claws on hands as well as monstrous teeth arrangements. it does show how to root claws onto the bone, but it doesn't cover how retractable claws work.
Part of the reason retractable claws work well for cats is because it fits into the digitigrade style of their feet, so it's a little tricky to fit them into humanoid fingers, but I've come up with a way i think it can work, so here are my study sketches:
Tumblr media
(image description: simple study sketches of a human finger and a cat claw. In the human finger, there are three bones extending from the hand, connected by two different tendons and a ligament on each bone that acts as a pulley for the tendons. The nail sits above the bone of the fingertip, in the flesh of the finger.
In the cat claw, there are three bones in the toe connected by a tendon and a few elastic ligaments. The claw is attached to the toe tip bone and the ligament here connects to the previous bone instead of the tendon. The final joint of the toe sits inside the toe pad. When the claw extends and retracts, it does so by pulling the toe tip back against the previous bone or flexing it forward. end description.)
So, how do you do that in a human finger, where there's no thick toe pad to contain these funky bone arrangements? Also, do you want to add an extra bone to the fingers, or do you want to shorten the fingers by using the bones that are already here? I went for the second option, but you don't have to. Certainly, adding retractable claws will make the function of a humanoid hand a little more restricted. the claws, however, will be useful for grabbing things in a different way than a normal human finger. so keep that in mind.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(image description: three drawings of a humanoid hand with retractable claws, showing the bones under the skin.
In the first image, there is also another comparison between the bones of a human hand and the bones of a cat paw, demonstrating how the human hand is mostly flat while a cat's paw bends the joints more, making the two difficult to combine.
In all the simplified drawings of a humanoid hand with retractable claws, the final two finger bones are bent in a V shape that can be flexed straight. The flesh of the fingers is rounded and thick when the claws are retracted, and then flexes to be longer and thinner when the claws extend. end description.)
An important note is that the claws will remain visible when retracted, they'll just look smaller. And I didn't draw it here, but if you've ever had to trim a cat's claws you'll notice a sort of skin sheath at the base of the claw, which can be added here as well. Also, a claw is just a hard keratin sheath over a softer core, called the quick. It will bleed if the claw is cut or broken in the wrong spot.
hopefully that's a helpful start! you can go even more cat-like and add some finger/palm pads if you want.

Put Some Clothes On!
But how? Winged humanoids sure do have some big limbs to work around when it comes to clothing.
(Here are the master posts for feathery wings and membranous wings)
Tumblr media
(Description: sketches of a feathery winged humanoid and a bat-winged humanoid. They are standing with their wings curled around their naked bodies and look concerned.)
I’m using my oc Morianten and my new tutorial oc Teo as models for this. Because clothes are more fun to draw on someone with a face instead of a blank mannequin lol.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Description: two images showing Morianten and Teo respectively to display basic clothing structure that accommodates feathery wings and bat wings respectively. Their outfits are pretty similar with some minor differences.)
Winged humanoids with feathery bird-like wings do have space between the wings and tail where you can add a belt. The basic structure is a halter top that fastens behind the neck and then again at the waist, with a big open space between so the wings are unobstructed. This would be put on at the neck first and then fastened at the waist. A belt can be added to attach a skirt or pants, which would be stepped into and pulled up to the base of the tail. Or the whole outfit can be a dress or jumpsuit that would be stepped into and then fastened at the waist and neck. Sleeves can be added, but they would require some specialization to stay up properly when they can’t attach to anything behind the arm.
Winged humanoids with bat-like wings do not have space for a belt, so their clothing is a little more shapeless. Think of a halter top jumpsuit or dress with an open back all the way down to the butt. It would be stepped into, pulled to the base of the tail, and then fastened at the neck. Just like the previous example, sleeves can be added but need a little extra specialization to stay up.
Tumblr media
(Description: Mori and Teo from behind, modeling the different ways they keep their backs warm.)
Since they can’t just throw on a normal shirt, staying warm in cold weather does require some unique solutions. For the feathery wings, honestly their back feathers might be good enough. But if it’s not good enough, a panel that fastens to the back of the neck and the back of the waist should help. And it might require some help to put on. For the bat wings, there is no waist to attach things to, so a cape attached at the neck with enough weights in the hem to keep it in place will have to do.
Tumblr media
(Description: Mori rocking a hood and Teo putting on some extra warm accessories.)
Hoods would be pretty easy to add to a halter top for winged people, it’s just a normal hood that might have to open in the back a little to go over the head and neck properly. Both types of winged people should be able to wear things like gloves and shoes perfectly fine, though if like me you are giving your winged people non-human feet you might have a trickier time giving them shoes.
I don’t think putting a wing cover over a feathery wing is a good idea, as it would disrupt the feathers and make flying extremely difficult. But maybe you could find a way to get a wing cover over the membranous wing. Maybe. It would be really tricky to get it to work right and be fitted properly to allow for flight. But if you want to do it, go for it, it’s fantasy bat people.
Tumblr media
(Description: four colored drawings of Mori and Teo modeling different outfits. In the top left, Mori is wearing a cute pink outfit with a poofy skirt that has a lace pattern on the top and fancy criss-crossed straps at the neck with matching gladiator sandals. In the opposite lower right corner, Mori is wearing a cozy blue and purple outfit with a hooded short cape and a tunic with long sleeves, as well as mittens, pants, and knee high boots. Everything on this outfit has a fluffy lining.
In the top right, Teo is wearing a practical denim jumpsuit with a green front panel that has yellow flowers on it. This panel ends in a big front pocket. He is also wearing sturdy looking knee high boots. In the opposite lower left corner, Teo is wearing a very dramatic hooded robe in a dark blue color, with flowy sleeves and gold jewelery. There is also a grey tapestry panel at the front with gold fringe and bright blue designs along it.)
It is so much fun to take the basic clothing structures and see just how much you can push them, so go wild! Even the simple outfits can be spiffed up with fun colors and patterns. And just because the outfits kind of require a halter top for the sake of the wings doesn’t mean you can only do one style of clothing. You can make it masculine, feminine, androgynous, colorful, fancy, casual, etc
Clothing also helps display culture! So if you’re trying to worldbuild with winged people and you’re stuck on culture stuff, think about how their specific needs regarding clothing might have developed and been affected by their lifestyles or changed their lifestyles. Bat people can’t wear belts because they have no waist gap between the wings and tail, so maybe they developed clothing with lots of pockets. Maybe your feathery humanoids are very bird like in their behavior so they wear very shiny and colorful outfits with lots of frill! The possibilities are endless.

Bat Wing Shapes
My previous post discussed the musculature of bat-winged humanoids.
The best way to figure out how to draw anything is to just sketch it out with references as many times as possible. The more you draw it and look at your references while you draw, the closer you will get to matching your references and then you’ll have an easier time drawing it from memory.
And also, bat wings, just like bird wings, come in many different shapes for different styles of flying. Narrow for speed, broad and round for soaring, etc. Look up different bats until you’ve found a wing shape that will work for your design. Keeping in mind it can be really hard to find clear open-winged pictures of every bat species, so try to start with a broader category before you narrow it down.
Tumblr media
(Description: two sketches of people with bat wings, displaying two very different wing shapes; one long and narrow, the other short and round. Below that are simple drawings of seven different bat wing shapes, outlined in blue with the arm and fingers drawn in red. There is a wide variety of shapes, from super narrow and pointy to very broad and square, and every combination in between.)
The main determining factors of wing shape are finger lengths and the space between the armpit and the bottom anchor of the wing membrane. For a bat, that second part is determined by leg length, because their wing membranes connect down to their ankles. But for our bat-winged people it would be tail length.
The longer and straighter the second finger is, the longer and narrower the wingtip is. The length of the fourth finger determines how broad the wing membrane is, since it is the anchor between the body and the end of the wing. Also, the first finger might be very close to the second finger, making a narrower wingtip, or it might be more separated, and that affects how wide the wingtip is. Sometimes there is more membrane between the thumb and first finger, sometimes there is no membrane there, but there is always going to be a membrane between the wrist and shoulder that keeps the wing edge straight.
When folding the wing, it can help to think of it like bringing your hands to your shoulders and then folding your wrists in. All the fingers kind of curl together and the wing will fold around the front of the body somewhat. The membrane is flexible and will simply shrink inwards, no pleated folding. The texture of a wing membrane is actually kind of weird but it’s not necessary to try to recreate it in your drawings, it involves a lot of tiny details.
And in flight, remember that the whole wing moves. The motion does not come from the shoulder alone, but also from the elbow, wrist, and fingers, which all work together for precise steering and speed. The fingers do curl during flight on the upstroke.
And that is all I have for humanoids with membranous wings.
Next up is a short post concerning how to put clothing on both forms of winged humanoid.
