Mystery Stitch-along Part 2
In order to keep things as mysterious as possible, or in case you missed the previous one, we’re going to “keep reading” these releases. If you missed the first post, click right here. If you need the set-up post click right here.
Also we’ve had so many wonderful people tagging us as they stitch along that we can’t really reblabb them all, but it’s super encouraging and we hope you continue. All the different color combinations (as well as the ones sticking to script) are great to see! Anyways, the next installment is under the cut!

Happy Friday! As promised, we have an announcement. We’re taking a summer vacation! There will be no regular samplers for July. This will let us do a few things:
1. Recharge. Our queue is still suffering and we just need a small break.
2. Work on commissions! We have amassed quite a backlog of folks who are interested in custom patterns and we’d really like to get through them. Commissions won’t be reopened per se, because of the first item, but we definitely want to keep the creative spark going.
3. Go through and update the gumroad patterns with improved versions and single page options.
All that being said, we don’t want to leave all of you wonderful folks hanging for a month. So we’re going to be doing a mystery stitch-along! It is going to be a very small piece and it is definitely a beginner-friendly pattern, although not a beginner-friendly method of work. We will be releasing a new section of the grid three times a week in lieu of shitpost samplers, and they are intentionally mixed up so as to keep the end product a mystery as long as possible, although it should start to get obvious towards the end.
The grid is 40 stitches by 30 stitches. Because even while “relaxing” we can knock out a 10x10 section.
What will you need if you want to play along?
Aida of your choice of the right size. Prism will be using 18 count so her final object is going to be TINY. If you aren’t sure how large your fabric should be, we usually check with a cross stitch calculator.
3 colors of floss. If you want to mimic the pattern exactly you will need: 917 (Medium Plum), 414 (Dk Steel Grey), 3810 (Dk Turquoise). However feel free to use whatever colors you prefer or have on hand. The 917 is the main color with main accent of 414 and touches of 3810

Any other accoutrements of your choice. Prism is actually gridding her fabric for the first time ever since it’s here and there, and hopefully it’ll make it a little more obvious visually.
And that’s our announcement! This will all start on Monday and we are really hyped to see how this goes.

Things I’ve learned from doing cross-stitch:
Nobody can tell you fucked up if nobody knew what your original plan was.
Don’t underestimate how easy it is to fuck up choosing colours
The more time you spend planning ahead and paying attention, the less time you spend fixing your mistakes.
Sometimes you just gotta let things be.
Nonviolent solutions are a necessary evil

Three projects I was able to finish over Spring Break! The first two are presents for my coworkers for being lovely people, the third is my very first commission! I’m hoping once I graduate college I can start creating patterns myself, but for now the first two are from DailyCrossStitch.com and the second was purchased off of Etsy.

ATTENTION ARTISTS: Need help calculating your commission prices?
Tumblr media
A tool that I’ve found is really handy is a called the Cash Clock. It’s a simple program that measures both the time that you’re working on a piece as well as how much money you should be earning. You can adjust the hourly wage to whatever you feel is right. Simply start the clock whenever you begin working on a project right up until you’re finished. It can give you a clear indication of what you should charge for commissions.
No artist should make below minimum wage for their artwork.
The Cash Clock is found as a download here.

Does anyone know the name of this technique?
You thread a single thread below the x of a stitch to decrease the amount of cloth showing through? i mostly use it with large black areas on white cloth when i am too lazy to increase my thread amount in the needle.

Did you know that beetle wings used to be sewn onto dresses? Like, hundreds of them on each dress? It's equally creepy and beautiful.

“When I was young, women were raped on the campus of a great university and the authorities responded by telling all the women students not to go out alone after dark or not to be out at all. Get in the house. (For women, confinement is always waiting to envelope you.) Some pranksters put up a poster announcing another remedy, that all men be excluded from campus after dark. It was an equally logical solution, but men were shocked at being asked to disappear, to lose their freedom to move and participate, all because of the violence of one man.”
