the activity tab is holding a steady line of defense on its psywar against me. still one notification pending, hiding somewhere inside the glut of code behind the screen. I know that I can't punch through and rip it out but it's so tempting

Don’t do this
General strikes are a big deal. They need organization, mass support, an agreed-upon list of demands, related demonstrations, etc. It’s not as easy as 10k people across the country at multiple different jobs not showing up - despite what you think, that will be seen as 10k independent occurrences and will result in several thousand firings for no call/no shows with no other notice paid. Even if this wildcat general strike gets enough traction to be seen as an actual threat (which is unlikely as just a viral tumblr post), the government will simply respond with arrests and brutality as they have in the past, and no part of this post prepares people for that
Instead, participate in the Earth Strike on January 15th to demand corporate and government action against climate change
And don’t just decide to do it on your own - talk to your coworkers, get in touch with local unions and your IWW branch, talk to local chapters of climate activism groups like Rising Tide, 350.org, and Transition Towns to organize concurrent demonstrations and actions, and spread the word as much as you can so we can get some steam behind this in the 2 months we have to prepare
“Fuck Work Day” would probably just make things worse while scaring people off from participating in the real coordinated action less than a month later
Please signal boost this post!

short story: A Computer Carol
(this story was originally posted to the computers subforum of the Something Awful forums in July of 2016. the first reply to the thread was “didn’t read”)
Darbiel was a computer programmer who lived in the San Fransisco bay area. Darbiel has an “open” relationship with his wife, and has sex with a different beautiful woman whenever he wants. One night, he was visited by three computers. “Darbiel, I am the Computer of Computers Past”, said the Computer of Computers Past, “I’m here to show you a vision of what computers looked like in the past.” The Computer of Computers Past took Darbiel by the hand and guided him through a time portal into the past. Darbiel found himself in a gigantic building filled with massive computers, covered in oscilliscopes, blinking lights, and little slots shooting out punchcards into a pile on the floor. “Wow, these are really big. In fact… they’re huge!” exclaimed Darbiel in shock, “Are these really computers?” “Yes”, said the Computer of Computers Past, “In the past, computers were much larger than they are now. Many took up entire rooms.” “Wow!” Darbiel responded. “Charles Babbage’s ‘Difference Engine’ is considered by many to be the first programmable computer. This has earned Babbage the title of 'the father of computing’”, said the Computer of Computers Past. “That’s incredible”, Darbiel said. Suddenly, Darbiel was back at home. But could it really have been all a dream? Just then, a tapping sound came from the window. Before Darbiel could get up to check what it was, a computer burst through into the room, shattering the window and spraying the interior of the room with shards of glass which gouged into Darbiel’s flesh. The computer was one of those cylindrical Mac Pros, but with arms and legs. It began to speak to Darbiel. “Darbiel, I am the Computer of Computers Present”, said the Computer of Computers Present, “I am here to show you some computers, so that you may better understand computers.” The Computer of Computers Present held up a picture of an alienware gaming laptop in his left hand and a picture of an iPad in his right hand. “Here are two computers. Do you like them?” said the Computer of Computers Present. “Yes, I like them very much. Thank you, computer”, replied Darbiel, blood trickling down his forehead from a glass wound. The Computer of Computers Present left, satisfied. Darbiel smiled to himself. “I wonder where my crazy adventure will take me next!” he wondered to himself. The Computer of Computers Future walked in. It was wearing a black cloak and holding a scythe, but aside from that it looked exactly like the Computer of Computers Present. “Hello, Darbiel. I’m the Computer of Computers Future. I’m here to show you a vision of the future”, said the Computer of Computers Future before walking out. Darbiel got up and followed it. They walked in silence for a few minutes before they got to a nearby graveyard. The Computer of Computers Future stood silently and pointed at a lone grave on top of a hill. Nervously, Darbiel approached the grave. When he got close, he crouched down next to it and peered at the gravestone. What he saw amazed him. There was a small computer monitor in the gravestone, with a mouse cursor displayed in the middle. Beneath the screen was a small trackball. Experimentally, Darbiel moved the trackball slightly to the left, and the mouse cursor moved left. “Gosh, this is amazing! There’s a computer inside the gravestone!” Darbiel said happily. “There is”, said the Computer of Computers Future, “That’s what I wanted to show you. In the future, some gravestones have computers inside them.” “This is the happiest day of my life”, Darbiel said with tears in his eyes. The Computer of Computers Future snapped its fingers and suddenly Darbiel was back in bed. The next morning, Darbiel was so touched by his experience with the three computers, that he went to a shop and bought three HUNDRED computers. He could afford all of them easily because of how well his job paid. THE END

Do you ever want to talk to someone but
1) You feel like you’re bothering them or coming off clingy 2) You don’t have anything to say, you just want to talk to them 3) You don’t know how to hold a conversation to save your life

wow cool facts about anime
have you ever wondered why anime people have such big eyes like this:
Tumblr media
that’s because of scrooge mcduck
Osamu Tekuza. creator of Astro Boy and often called “The Godfather of Anime,” was a big fan of the Scrooge McDuck comics from back in the fifties and when he created Astro Boy, he based his art style on the Scrooge McDuck comics
so basically this character
Tumblr media
who serves as the visual basis for the modern-day anime art style was inspired by this
Tumblr media
which means that every time you get horny for this
Tumblr media
or for these guys
Tumblr media
you’re actually getting your jollies from the great grandkids of this motherfucker

I think we need to normalize the idea of marrying friends. I don’t mean in a “the best romantic relationships come from the best friendships” type way, though I do believe that’s true. I mean in a “I have zero romantic feelings for you, but I would totally spend the rest of my life committed to a future where you are my primary partner and maybe even raise a family together” type way.
Like, I don’t think it should be an aromantic-exclusive option, or a plan B when you and your best friend are still single at 40 and want to take yourselves out of the dating market.
I’ve heard it mostly as that backup plan, that “if I don’t find anyone, I’ll just marry Trish haha”, and I don’t think that’s even what I’m talking about normalizing. That’s a secondary outcome, seen as “giving up” on finding “real love”, and even if a pair of friends go for it, it’s plagued with this general feeling of “sub par”.
What I mean is that marrying a best friend (or having a committed intimate or emotional platonic relationship) should be seen as just as worth doing as marrying someone you’re in love with. It should be normal for teenagers to try as many committed friendships as they do romantic relationships. It should be normal for someone to say “this is my best friend and if everything works out, maybe we’ll move in together later” or “Trish and I have been roommates for two years now. We’re considering adopting soon, or Trish might carry a child!”
And as an aromantic person, it shouldn’t be strange for me to say “I prefer friendship to romance”. People should hear that and nod their heads like “that’s understandable. John feels the same.”
Hell, I see so many people expressing that they prefer their friends’ company to their romantic partner’s. “My friends understand me better and I think treat me better” and they’re expected to go home to this person, to marry and have kids with this person. It’s bizarre to me. Your platonic feelings for your friend aren’t inferior to your romantic feelings for your boyfriend, and if one of them treats you better than the other, I think you should probably rethink which one is your primary partner.
I also find it strange that it’s not more common in poly spaces for a friend to be considered a legitimate “partner”. In a world where friendships were just as likely to bloom into life partnerships as romantic relationships, I think polyamory would be much more commonplace. “I committed to Josephine about a year ago and now we own a home, but I fell in love with Joe about six months ago and we’re all trying to make it work.” Josephine shouldn’t have to worry about her partner leaving her for Joe just because their bond is romantic and therefore the “sensible” relationship to choose over the other.
I’m just ranting at this point, but I reiterate: committed friendships should not be seen as strange and “sad”, but as a legitimate option for a lifetime commitment. Not just for aromantics like myself, but for everyone. It should just be normal.
And not to be presumptuous, but I don’t think I’m alone in this thinking
