A3! Event Story Summary: TRY! A Brilliant Stage Collaboration

And without much further ado, a fairly detailed summary (almost reads like a translation) of the event story for the A3! x I-Chu collaboration. Enjoy!
Episode 1
The scene opens in the dorm living room, with everyone marveling at something on TV. The Director wonders what all the hubbub is about, and Muku explains that a music program is on, featuring “i-chu”. Yuki elaborates that it’s short for “Idols-in-training.” Taichi and Muku in particular are captivated and want to try it themselves, but Yuki doesn’t seem convinced that singing and dancing are in their field, which Azuma and Sakyo refute. The latter in particular emphasizes how pervasive song and dance are in theater even outside of musicals (and how nobody should expect to put on a half-assed show). Masumi is as usual preoccupied with earning all of the Director’s attentions, even if it means becoming an idol himself.
Later, as the director is explaining Sakyo’s thoughts to Itaru, Tasuku, and Tsumugi, Taichi and Yuki head out shopping for costume materials. As they leave, the remaining adult crew mention offhand that Sakuya and Masumi, and Homare and Hisoka went out together too.
Episode 2
Sakuya and Masumi are out on the town for none other than scoping out potential date spots (curry restaurants) for Masumi to take the Director to. They set off for a curry restaurant after Sakuya gets over his bewilderment of how crowded the streets are.
Meanwhile, Homare seems to have lost track of their original goal of buying marshmallows and composes poetry instead, much to Hisoka’s dismay. Just when Homare is back on task, Hisoka chases after a cat and disappears, Homare in pursuit.
After already having some shopping done, Taichi and Yuki consider going to a newly opened store. Taichi is confident he knows the one and insists on leading the way— Yuki relents, figuring anyone who isn’t Tenma should have a decent sense of direction.
All three groups end up losing their ways and find each other in front of…?
Episode 3
Everyone does a quick recap on how they ended up here, and try to make sense of their location. Homare remarks the building looks like a school, but before they can figure out where exactly they are, Hisoka once again gives chase to the cat and enters inside. Fearing getting booked for trespassing, the remaining MANKAI members go off to try and catch him.
Hisoka (and the cat) are finally secured, but it isn’t long before they are noticed by Seiya Aido, who had been practicing his singing in the area. Seiya mistakes them for new students, but Sakuya and Taichi are quick to clear up the situation. However, as they make to leave, a lightbulb goes off in Seiya’s head and he brings everyone along to a practice studio.
When they arrive, Seiya explains to the students already practicing inside that he’s brought the theater company members to tutor them on the skit they’ll be doing in their upcoming performance.
Episode 4
After Seiya clarifies that the name of the institution is “Etoile Vio School”, each idol-in-training introduces themselves with their personal names and the names of their units. The stark similarities between some of the i-chu boys and the MANKAI boys become readily apparent.
Seiya reiterates that he’d like for the theater company members to teach them a little acting for the skit in their upcoming live performance, since none of them have any acting experience. Although hesitant at first, given that the gig comes with no strings attached and would probably get them off the hook for trespassing, the MANKAI boys agree with the proposal.
MANKAI put on a quick skit of an idol group at practice, where Yuki is apparently the weakest link and keeps making mistakes. Homare is especially critical, to which Masumi is in agreement, whereas the others try to be supportive. Yuki almost threatens to quit because he’s holding everyone back, but Hisoka (presumably the leader of the group) absolutely won’t have it, and insists that they’ve achieved this success precisely because they all worked together. Everyone makes up, and the practice session continues.
After the demonstration, the actors explain that what’s important in these kinds of performances, among other things, is knowing your fellow performers and considering how you are going to react next, but it should not be obvious to the audience that you’re thinking on your feet.
Taking the advice into consideration, the idols-in-training give the skit a shot.
Episode 5
The scene opens with Kokoro and Seiya acting out a scene, only to be interrupted by Seiya’s flubbing his lines. The actors say their synergy has at least improved since their first attempt, and that it’s good to see progress. Masumi is led to reminisce about how awkward Sakuya was in the beginning.
The remaining characters give some more comments regarding the art of acting (i.e. how there are no do-overs, or how fellow actors can cover for your mistakes, etc.).
Grateful for their advice, Seiya puts out the idea of doing something as thanks for the actors’ teachings, to which the other i-chus are in agreement. Although most of the MANKAI boys are hesitant, Masumi and Hisoka are ready with their requests of a curry recipe (for the Director, of course) and 10 years’ worth of marshmallows respectively.
In a more practical approach, as a result of recalling Sakyo’s comment about the possibility of singing and dancing on stage, Sakuya asks if they could teach them their idol performance skills.
Just when Seiya and Kokoro agree, school principal Mr. Bear makes an appearance. Having overheard the conversation, the stuffed animal of an administrator suggests that the best way to learn how to be an idol is to actually get up on stage as one, and insists the actors participate in the upcoming program.
Episode 6
Mr. Bear explains that he was looking for an opening act for the i-chu performance, and that this arrangement between idols-in-training and actors would work out just perfectly. He gives permission for them to enter the school for practice sessions leading up to the performance.
At present, Kokoro and Yuki work on dancing while Ban and Taichi look on in the pratice room. Seiya, Saku, Sakuya, and Masumi are out in the courtyard, although their break time descends into a pity party for Masumi and Saku both missing their respective Director/Producer. Hikaru and Homare are in the gym doing vocal exercises, while Hisoka and Mutsuki hit the hay— but wake up to start rehearsal for the main event.
Episode 7
The scene opens in the Etoile practice room, with Seiya commenting that after just a few days the actors are now able to dance on an individual level. This session will be their first time dancing as a group.
Kokoro gives Yuki a passing mark, Ban comments on Taichi standing out too much, Saku has concerns about Masumi’s lack of enthusiasm, Hikaru praises Homare’s Shakespearean voice, but Mutsuki reminds him to keep pace with the dance moves. Meanwhile, Hikaru mentions to Hisoka that he gets a bit complacent with his moves because of his good coordination and should thus should focus more on each motion. As for Sakuya and his lack of confidence, Seiya encourages him to keep his chin up and remember that he’s in the center along with Yuki.
After the critiques, Mr. Bear passes by and stays to inspect the group’s progress. After their second attempt at performing as a group, the principal expresses reservations about having them perform on stage, providing similar critiques as the other idol students. He is especially harsh on Sakuya, questioning if he truly understands the level he’s performing at.
Episode 8
Seiya finds Sakuya in low spirits out in the courtyard, the latter questioning if he should even go out on stage at all. Seiya reminds him that being in the center means you can rely on everyone around you, and that’s why he enjoys it. He still has his doubts too, of course, and there was even a time he couldn’t consult with his friends about something— when the person who inspired him to become an idol, Tsubaki, told him that he had no sense of self, that he needed to find his personality. Keeping it to himself brought him and his friends down, but they were also the ones that brought him out of the rut, and now he’s doing great.
Sakuya recalls the reason why he wanted to be an actor (that pirate play he saw in grade school) and the concept of “The Show must go on”. He realizes that even though they’re just actors-in-training, they have the rare opportunity to open for i-chu, and so he wants to work hard as the center. With his new resolve, Sakuya and Seiya follow Yuki and Ban back in for practice.
Episode 9
It’s almost showtime, and Taichi and Homare have their nerves quelled by Hikaru and everyone enjoys a lively discussion about the costumes.
Shortly after, the program begins with Seiya introducing their guest performers. After the formalities, the MANKAI performance starts— only for the music to cut out suddenly. The idols-in-training are ready to suspend the performance and wait in the wings, but Sakuya goes all-out and starts going a cappella. He encourages the audience to join in, with Homare and Hisoka quick to back him up on vocals. Yuki leads the choreography with Taichi and Masumi backing up. The music finally comes back on, and the performance goes on full throttle, earning solid praise from the audience and the i-chu themselves.
Now it’s the idols’ turn…
Episode 10
The guest performers are enraptured by the quality of the real deal. For the last song of the night, Seiya and the others invite the MANKAI boys to join in as well, and they all go out with a bang.
Afterwards, congratulations ensue backstage among all performers involved. The i-chu performers were especially moved by the actors’ quick-thinking when the music went out— the same problem actually happened to them when they were first starting out their idol training.
The character pairs say their respective goodbyes, most of them promising to keep in contact. In particular, Seiya has to have Sakuya re-teach him “The Show must go on” mantra again after fudging it, after which Sakuya praises their amazing performance and how it inspires him to want to act ASAP. Seiya promises to go see him perform one day.
EPILOGUE
Back at the MANKAI dorm, the boys enjoy a post-performance meal. Taichi raves about how well the performance went to Sakyo and Kazu, also praising Yuki’s rush costuming job. Yuki mentions there being a Masumi-level “psycho stalker” among the i-chu, to which Itaru congratulates Masumi on finding a friend, although Masumi doesn’t think of him as a friend. Homare was extremely pleased with Hikaru, and also comments how happy Hisoka seeemed in finding a friend in Mutsuki— worrying Tasuku that there were more of their kind out there.
After they reminisce about how well it all went, especially Sakuya’s a cappella save, Sakyo wonders if this means they’re ready to do a production with singing and dancing anytime— although it’s just a idea.
Seiya’s i-chu unit is heard on the television, and at the closing part of his speech Seiya quotes Sakuya’s mantra.
“The Show must go on.”
As long as it is, this was remarkably faster than a full translation, so I will likely continue to post these until the translation gap can be filled. Stay tuned!

Tenma: Sakyo, can’t you do something about that furrow between your brows on your birthday, at least?
Yuki: Sakyo’s birthday… Wonder if he’s in a good mood. I do wanna win the budget negotiation for the next production’s costumes.
Muku: Sakyo, I give you… all 24 volumes of the shojo manga series I recommended you!
Misumi: Here’s Sakyo’s present! Triangle glasses~! Cool, right??
Kazu: Mr. Furuche, HBD! Mukkun is plannin’ a tea party yo~~! Come on, afternoon!
Autumn Troupe
Banri: For Sakyo… bubble wrap’s fine, right? Economizing kthx.
Juza: Sakyo, happy birthday. Your spot-on advice really helps. Thanks for your continued support.
Taichi: One day, I’ll also become a chill, mature guy like big bro’ Sakyo and be popular— I’ll show you!

Sakyo: I’m at that age— I haven’t given my birthday a second thought in years… but it isn’t so bad once in awhile.

Tsumugi: Sakyo, happy birthday. Thank you for always supporting our theater company.

Hisoka: Oh… Sakyo is pretty young. Surprising.
Homare: Sakyo refused my celebratory poem. My goodness, guess he’s a shy guy too.

New Content Ahoy!
Long time, no post! A big move and a new job have really put the brakes on things, and although my hands are still tied, I’m happy to report this blog is still on life support.
In an effort to maximize what little time I have, I’m trying a new thing of posting summaries of the event stories in order to deliver content in a size digestible for both reader and translator. It’s the lazy way out, but please bear with me!
We’ll be kicking off with the A3! x I-Chu collaboration event story, then working chronologically backward. Look out for it in the next few days!

A3! Voice Drama: Leaders Meeting
An oldie but goodie included with the “MANKAI☆KAIKA SENGEN” single released back in February. The four leaders discuss the issues in each of their troupes, get a little personal about some of their members, and even do impressions of them!
Tenma: A3! Drama CD. Sakuya: Leaders Meeting. —— /running footsteps/ /door opening and closing/ Tenma: Sorry, got held up! Banri: Tenma, you’re friggin’ late. Tenma: Filming went over. Sakuya: Everyone’s here now, right? Tsumugi: With that, I call the 13th Leader Meeting to order. Tsumugi: I, Tsumugi Tsukioka, will be the moderator. Tsumugi: As for secretary— Sakuya, I’m counting on you. Sakuya: Please leave it to me! Banri: /game sounds/ Boom! Got that super rare~ Tsumugi: Banri! No games during the meeting. Banri: Woooord. But uh, what’re we doing this meeting? The director isn’t here, yeah? Tsumugi: That’s true… She said she’d leave it up to us, but… Tenma: Hey. Tsumugi: Tenma, go ahead. Tenma: How about “Regarding MANKAI Company’s Operations Strategy?” Banri: Could we even decide something like that with just us 4? Sakuya: Why not collect some of our opinions and make suggestions to the director? Tsumugi: Yeah, that sounds good, I think. I’d like to confirm the status of each troupe, too. Tenma: So we’re set, then. Banri: Roger that. Tsumugi: Alright, let’s jump right in from Spring Troupe, please. Sakuya: Okay! Sakuya: Spring Troupe is currently practicing toward a local tour. We’re thinking of several unique strategies to make something even better than our last in-house production. Banri: It’s been awhile since your last show— isn’t it tough trying to get a feel for the stage again? Sakuya: That is the case, yes. We do get a lot of practice from street acting, though. Tsumugi: Improv theater is a bit different though, isn’t it? Sakuya: Yes… And Itaru seems very busy lately. Tsumugi: He’s the only one working full-time after all, maybe he has lot on his plate? Banri: Ohhhh, haha. It’s ‘cuz there was that massive update. Tenma: Huh? Update? Banri: The expansion for this game he’s into. With leveling and logging in day and night— ‘course he’s got no time. Tenma: You mean he’s “busy” with a game?! Banri: Exactly. Sakuya: There’s Masumi, too. He’s hardly in the mood for practice whenever the director is working with other troupes. Tenma: Yeeaah… Tsumugi: I can see that. The director is his life, after all. Sakuya: Spring Troupe improves exponentially when we’re in a pinch, but we may have trouble with regular, routine improvement. Sakuya: If I could just apply my leadership more… Banri: Well, every troupe’s got their issues. Tenma: Summer Troupe has problems too. Tenma: Since Yuki spends all his time on costuming for other troupes, there’re times when he can’t even do normal practice. Banri: Our costume designer is always aimin’ high after all. Recently Taichi from Autumn’s been getting roped in too. Tenma: Plus, Kazunari is in charge of the website and is busy with the updates. Tsumugi: A number of Summer Troupe members work behind-the-scenes or have their own side jobs, so it’s natural for those kinds of problems to pop up, I guess. Sakuya: Does Autumn Troupe have these kinds of issues? Banri: Well, I think everyone’s pretty gung-ho about practice. Banri: But— we fight a lot. Tsumugi: I’d expect nothing less of MANKAI Company’s most trigger happy troupe. Banri: Hyodo’s friggin’ annoying. Banri: I swear— practice goes nowhere. Tenma: Your relationship’s the same as when you guys first auditioned, huh. Tenma: If we’re talking about getting derailed though, Misumi’s just as bad. Tenma: At the least, we have to make sure we don’t leave anything triangular lying around. Tsumugi: Misumi’s love for triangles is pretty extreme. Banri: He’s more a devout believer than a fan. Tenma: “Trianglicism,” huh? Sakuya: How fitting… Tenma: Also, everyone’s so pushy that we lack unity and calm. Tsumugi: Summer is the overall youngest and an energetic troupe, right? Tenma: “Energetic”? More like “noisy.” Tenma: Those guys totally don’t get I’m the “leader.” Tenma: They don’t respect me at all. Tenma: Seriously, who do they think I am?! Tenma: I’m the talented 15-plus-year veteran actor Tenma Sumeragi! Banri: So the pushiest of them all is actually the leader himself, amirite? Tenma: What?! /chair shuffling/ How am I— Sakuya: Easy, easy. Sakuya: How about Winter Troupe? Tsumugi: Hmm… Well, in short, we have a lot of people who go at their own pace. Banri: Oh yeah. Like a poet, and a hostess*, and someone who sleeps three-thirds of his life. Tenma: Wouldn’t he be asleep his whole life then? Tsumugi: Maybe it’s because our members are all on the older side, but our difficulties are in being impulsive, or rather, unable to concentrate on improving. Tenma: Everyone’s got something, huh. Tsumugi: Yeah… Banri: Can we really talk about “strategy” in this situation? Tenma: We’ve got more fundamental problems. Tsumugi: Mmm… Sakuya: Oh! Speaking of which, I read this in a book the other day. Apparently, a leader’s love for the members is essential to improving a group’s performance. Banri: “Love” for the members? Tsumugi: So complaining like this is no good, then? Tenma: I mean, it’s not like there’s no love at all in those. Banri: ’the heck do you mean by “love” anyway? Talk about embarrassing. Tsumugi: Maybe it’s like, how much you observe and think about the members. Tenma: Or like, how well you know them? Like that? Sakuya: Excuse me! In that case, I’m actually pretty confident. Sakuya: So I noticed this just recently, but when Masumi is sleepy, he always rubs his right eye— never, ever the left one! Banri: Damn that’s specific! Tsumugi: Oh, I see. Good eye. Sakuya: When you live together, you start to notice all kinds of things, right? Banri: I got one. On nights after he’s had gym class, Hyodo will absolutely grind his teeth. Friggin’ obnoxious. Sakuya: Really?! Tenma: Isn’t he just tired? Sakuya: Tsumugi, have you noticed anything about your troupe members? Tsumugi: Hmm… When Tasuku oversleeps, he’ll definitely have a cowlick on the left side of the back of his head— like that? Banri: Of course. Childhood friends of 10-years deep have tons of info. Tenma: Kinda stalker-y, though. Tsumugi: Also, the wheezing sounds Hisoka makes during REM sleep is a little different from the wheezing sounds he makes during non-REM sleep. Sakuya: So it has nothing to do with how long he’s known someone. Banri: Tsumugi is the real deal. Tenma: He’s definitely built to be a stalker. Sakuya: B-But, you can definitely feel his love for the members! Tenma: If we’re just talking about “observing,” I’m observing too! Tenma: Yuki’s always like, “So obnoxious. Crappy actor.” Sakuya: Wow! That sounded just like him! Tsumugi: That was surprisingly good! Banri: That’s just an impression! Sakuya: Well, you can’t do an impression of someone without observing them closely. Banri: Then I can do Hyodo impressions all day long. So sick and tired of him. Banri: “Get lost. Jerk.” Tenma: …How’s that different from your usual self? Tsumugi: It really isn’t… Banri: Hey, it’s totally different! Don’t lump me in with that guy! Sakuya: Okay, my turn! Sakuya: “A blowfish will strike ducks who smile, laugh, and grow fat.” Banri: Hahaha! Spot on! Tsumugi: Just like Citron. Tenma: “Good fortune will come to the homes of those who smile, laugh and grow fat,” right? Tenma: The nonsensical bit was very Citron. Banri: How ‘bout Winter Troupe? Tsumugi: I’m not too confident, but— Tsumugi: “I shall present my poetic secret weapon.” Tsumugi: “Distant montage / Continual décantage…” All: Hahaha! Banri: Hilariousss. Sakuya: That is just like Homare. Banri: “Not too confident”? You were totally into it! Tenma: Oh, me, me, me! Tenma: “Princes are so amazing~ Wish I could be one~” Sakuya: Haha! It’s Muku! Tsumugi: “Each and every spice is critical in curry. In other words, curry is like its own little world.” Banri: Here comes the director out of left field! Sakuya: That’s too real! Tenma: You’re good! /door opening and closing/ Sakuya: Ah, Director! Banri: Oh…Director… Tenma: N-No! We weren’t playing around! Tsumugi: We weren’t fooling around either! Banri: We weren’t practicing for an impression contest either! Sakuya: We were seriously having a meeting! Tenma: Honest! Banri: Yeah! Like, uh, how we express our love for our members? Kinda? Sakuya: Y-Yeah, yeah! Exactly! Tenma: Like, how much we think about our members! Banri: Well, that last bit was totally an impression contest, though… Sakuya: Hm? Uh… the…meeting? Banri: I mean…we were having a meeting… Tenma: About…MANKAI Company’s…future operations strategy… Tsumugi: Ehe…we got really off track, huh?
* From the brief research I’ve done, the term Banri uses here specifically refers to women (who do nightlife kind of jobs). I’m sure he’s cleverly referencing Azuma’s feminine appearance in addition to his previous occupation.

B’s-LOG June 2017: Special Interview

Relax* Recreation!!!! (Thank you for all your votes!)
We sit down with Mr. Chigasaki, Mr. Ikaruga, Mr. Furuichi, and Mr. Tsukioka and talk about their impressions of today’s photoshoot.
—Good job with the shoot today! Now that you’re all done, could you share with us how you’re feeling?
Itaru: Since the shoot was here at the dorm we live in, we were able to relax in front of the camera. You probably got candid shots of us. Tsumugi: It was actually so normal, it’s a little embarrassing. Sakyo: The others kept poking their noses in here when we first started, so we couldn’t really focus. Itaru: They ran for it after that demonic roar of yours, though. Misumi: They could’ve just joined us~ Tsumugi: But then there would be no meaning behind the audition* we did. Sakyo: Anyway, I didn’t think even the props were going to be from here too. Tsumugi: True— the controller is Itaru’s personal one. Misumi: I want the triangle controller too~ Itaru: No way. This one’s my partner. Sakyo: The magazine you were reading, Tsukioka— wasn’t that the one sitting in the lounge? Tsumugi: It’s a fashion magazine with Tenma on the cover. I didn’t think about it when I picked it up, but it’s pretty interesting. Itaru: Whenever he’s in a magazine, Tenma does casually leave it out on the table, huh. Tsumugi: It’s kind of cute. Misumi: Yeah, Tenma’s cute, y’know~ Sakyo: Well, even if he’s got a lot of acting experience, he’s still just a brat.
—This shoot crossed troupe lines. Having done this shoot together, could you please tell us about any new discoveries you’ve made or anything that surprised you?
Misumi: I think Itaru surprisingly likes triangles! Itaru: …I’ll at least hear you out on why. Misumi: ‘Cuz you keep hitting the triangle button! I totally get why you’d pick the triangle~ Itaru: △ is base attack so the amount of… you three won’t get it even if I explain, huh? Tsumugi: Sorry. If it were Banri he’d probably understand, but… Sakyo: What do you and Settsu find so amusing about games anyway? It’s beyond me. Itaru: You say that, but you seemed intrigued when you were watching me use the controller. Would you like to play together next time? Sakyo: No.
—Regarding the audition* you and all the MANKAI Company members participated in: how did you feel when you heard about it, or how did you feel when you were chosen?
Tsumugi: I was surprised when I first heard about the project, but I was even more so when I heard the results. I really didn’t think that I would be chosen at all… Sakyo: Same here— at first, I thought it was some kind of mistake. For someone like me, an old— Itaru: Now now, you two, can’t you just be happy about it? Right, Misumi? Misumi: Mmmhmm! You said it, Itaru! Itaru: Well, I do want to know why we got chosen. Sakyo: True. We can refer to it for the direction of our fanservice and theater company promotion… blah blah blah… Tsumugi: …Seems like he’ll be awhile. Let’s just ask if we can get the results of the survey. Misumi: Awww, but it’s so simple! It’s cuz everyone loves triangles, right~? Tsumugi: I don’t know about that… I mean, I’m sure there are some who do… Misumi: I’ve got it! As a show of thanks, how about giving the participants Super Triangles? Itaru: To everyone? Misumi: You bet! Sakyo: Denied. It’s a waste of money. Misumi: Cheapskate~! Tsumugi: Ahaha. Let’s thank them with our acting, okay?
—Considering the relaxed mood of today’s shoot, could you tell us about what kind of person you’re able to relax with?

Q1: Please tell us whom you consider to be your rival or whom you respect within your theater company.
Everyone. Even though they’re younger than me, they’re very responsible and overflowing with talent. They’re always teaching me so much that it makes me want to teach them all sorts of things myself.
Q2: Is there a role you’d like to do in a future production?
Last time I played the role of a doctor, so in terms of the "occupation" category, I think a policeman might be nice. When I was with this one client, I got very excited over some real handcuffs. Speaking of which, I believe Sakyo has a pair— in expectation of getting the role someday, maybe I’ll start practicing with them now.
Q3: Among the minors in MANKAI Company, is there anyone who seems like they would mature into a sexy adult?
Quite a few of them do have potential, after all… This may come as a surprise, but I would say Muku seems the most likely. He may look cute now, but actually it’s those types who tend to transform, you know. Heh, I’m excited to see what 5 years will bring.
Q4: Mr. Yukishiro, with all your adult charm, what do you think is your greatest weapon?
My touch, probably. Being able to continue my work as a sleeping companion for so long was due in large part to that, no? Oho, this is the sort of thing that’s hard to understand without trying it for yourself, you know. I’ll be waiting, so contact me whenever you’re ready, 'kay?
Q5: What kind of place is MANKAI Company to you?
The place where I can be connected with everyone, maybe. I thought I’d never be deeply attached to anyone ever again. But, performing with MANKAI Company led me to realize that my heart and mind are linked to everyone else's. It’s an important place that I don’t want to let go of.

Q1: Please tell us whom you consider to be your rival or whom you respect within your theater company.
Citron and Kazunari, Itaru as well— the words they use are not in my dictionary. It’s not on the level of “respect,” but I do appreciate them enriching my vocabulary each day.
Q2: Is there a role you’d like to do in a future production?
I’d like to do something from Shakespeare. MANKAI Company has only done “Romeo and Juliet” thus far, so I’d very much like for them to take on another of his works. Additionally, I’d like for Tsuzuru to create a role that capitalizes on this noble disposition and voice of mine.
Q3: Please tell us the titles of the poems you’ve composed recently.
Generally, I am not one for using titles. Of course, if my publisher has an idea or reason for it, I will do so. Recently… “Sea Slug / Xanadu,” “Himiko, Actually She Has No Mirror,” “Red Paper Roll, Blue Paper Roll, Yellow Paper Roll” and… Oh my, is that quite enough? Very well, I’ll send over a list later.
Q4: If you could make a request of your roommate, fellow Winter Troupe member Hisoka Mikage, what would it be?
Stop falling asleep suddenly. Also, limit your marshmallow intake. It’s a little late for this, but— does eating so many marshmallows not upset your stomach?
Q5: What kind of place is MANKAI Company to you?
Hm, I’ve never thought about that before. Hmmmm… the place that makes up for what I lack… is what I would say.
Not sure about the sea slug one (besides it being silly), but the second poem is a play on Himiko’s mirror, and the last one is a known tongue twister.

Q1: Please tell us whom you consider to be your rival or whom you respect within your theater company.
No one. I have a natural enemy, though. His name’s Arisu, the guy who eats my marshmallows without permission and interrupts my sleep with his noise.
Q2: Is there a role you’d like to do in a future production?
A role that has few lines and stays in the same spot the whole time. I’m going to give Tsuzuru and the director marshmallows and ask them about that. It’s not a bribe, it’s a gift.
Q3: Please tell us your recommended napping spots in the dormitory and in the MANKAI Theater.
Azuma’s room. It’s quiet and smells good. The courtyard is warm and cozy, but people are always around, so it gets a little noisy. One time, Tasuku sent a soccer ball flying, and it totally sucked.
Q4: If you could make a request of your roommate, fellow Winter Troupe member Homare Arisugawa, what would it be?
Be quiet. Leave me alone. And don’t eat the marshmallows. If you cave and do eat them, buy me new ones.
Q5: What kind of place is MANKAI Company to you?
A comfortable bed. For now. …If my memories come back, maybe it’ll change. That’s why for now I’ll just think of it as a bed. Because until that day comes, I want to stay a simple actor with a couple of memories missing.

Q1: Please tell us whom you consider to be your rival or whom you respect within your theater company.
Since all the guys in our company do different styles of acting, it keeps me motivated every day, but… I’ve been aware of Tsumugi as an actor for a long time. It's tough to imitate his meticulous, delicate style. He doesn’t see it as a big deal, but then all the more I don’t want to be overshadowed by him.
Q2: Is there a role you’d like to do in a future production?
I want to try a comedic or a villainous role. At my previous theater company, I was only able to do the “handsome guy” type, so to expand my breadth as an actor, I’d like to challenge myself with those roles.
Q3: You are childhood friends with fellow Winter Troupe member Tsumugi Tsukioka, but from your own perspective, what is he to you?
More than a friend, he’s like a brother. If I’m not careful, I might spend more time with him than with my actual family.
Q4: Mr. Takato, given your taciturn image, would you like to take this opportunity to request anything of your fellow Winter Troupe members?
Learn to work together. At a glance we look like we have our act together, but in reality everyone just does whatever they want. Suddenly reciting a dumb poem, taking arbitrary breaks, sleeping literally anywhere… The only thing “adult” about Winter Troupe is our average age.
Q5: What kind of place is MANKAI Company to you?
My second home. I do plenty of guest appearances at other companies and put in my all no matter where I am. But, in the end, the place where I shine the most, the place where I can really use my outside experiences, it’s all MANKAI Company. …It’s hard to put into words. I’ve always had trouble verbalizing things.

Q1: Please tell us whom you consider to be your rival or whom you respect within your theater company.
I suppose it would be Tasuku. Since I’m not able to perform as boldly or magnificently, I think as an actor I both respect him yet don't want to be outshined by him.
Q2: Is there a role you’d like to do in a future production?
Let’s see. Comparatively, I receive many roles with calm personalities, so I’d like to try one that has a wider range of emotions. I also have a fascination for action, so a somewhat violent role would be fun.
Q3: You are childhood friends with fellow Winter Troupe member Tasuku Takato, but from your own perspective, what is he to you?
I think on this sometimes, but I never arrive at an answer. I’d like to think he’s like a brother, but… since I don’t have siblings myself, I don’t have a point of reference. When I see Tasuku and his older brother, I feel like it’s a little different from what we have. Hmmm, I feel like it’s going to be an eternal question, isn’t it?
Q4: Please tell us about your dreams, Mr. Tsukioka.
To continue acting indefinitely with my friends in this company, I think. Something so simple… may be what it sees like, but as someone who’s just returning to the stage, I can’t think of more than that.
Q5: What kind of place is MANKAI Company to you?
Where I belong as an actor, I’d say. I threw away my identity as an actor after just one setback. I thought I had no talent or ability for acting, that I couldn’t make it as an actor… It’s pathetic, isn’t it? Considering how much I loved it and how much I devoted to it. But MANKAI Company accepted me for who I am and gave me a place to be an actor. I really can’t thank them enough.

Although it’s not really becoming of a 30-something like me to be getting all worked up about a bunch of kids being my “rivals”… Well, Sumeragi and Takato have some amazing acting techniques. You bet I’ll be stealing what I can, and I don’t give a damn about how that comes off.
Q2: Is there a role you’d like to do in a future production?
Minagi’s scripts always go beyond our imaginations. Whatever role it is, I’ve got no complaints as long as it’s something from a script he put his all into. …Well, I guess if there was a role that only I could pull off, I’d wanna try that.
Q3: Please tell us about the appeal of bubble wrap.
…Who the hell blabbed about my secret hobby? I’ll answer just this once, but… the unmatched catharsis from bubble wrap… the moment the air leaves the crushed plastic… it’s like the nirvana in Zen… blah blah blah… When did I discover its appeal? The first time was was probably when I was forced to babysit some brat. I’m leaving it at that.
Q4: Mr. Furuichi, although even the wildest Autumn Troupe members recognize you as their superior, is there anything you can’t handle or are afraid of?
Something I can't handle? I want to say there’s nothing, but handling the director has me at a loss. When the theater was going to be demolished, even though she was scared, she still came at me, the company management’s opinion be damned. …Hah, what a troublesome woman.
Q5: What kind of place is MANKAI Company to you?
The place that changed my life twice, is all I’ll say. Sorry, but just don’t pry. As for whether it’ll change my life a third time after this… I’m still not sure.

Q1: Please tell us whom you consider to be your rival or whom you respect within your theater company.
“Rival,” huh… Well, as one might expect, since seeing everyone in Autumn Troupe take acting so seriously is a big source of motivation for me, in that sense it’s like all the Autumn Troupe members are my rivals. As for whom I respect, it’s definitely Sakyo. And of course, the director.
Q2: Is there a role you’d like to do in a future production?
In our debut production, I received the role of the antagonist, and as you might expect, playing someone completely different from my usual self was as fun as it was difficult. That’s why I’d like to do a role that’s totally different from who I am. Huh? Cross-dressing? …I’d say that’s pretty impossible in my case.
Q3: Please tell us what your specialty dish is.
Although I’m always making the most of my repertoire to keep the menu interesting for everyone in the company, the dish I’m good at and always feel like making is probably quiche. It’s fun to change up the ingredients, and I get excited waiting for it to finish baking.
Q4: Please tell us what you think “masculinity” is.
That’s a tough one… Maybe this isn’t exactly “masculinity,” but there’s one thing I do know. Real strength is different from the physical kind. I think it’s more like being able to be accepting and tolerant of others. I know I’ve said that like I’ve got everything figured out, but I’m nowhere near that level myself.
Q5: What kind of place is MANKAI Company to you?
The place where my precious second family lives. Between when I first joined this theater company and now, the meaning of being on stage and being in a company has changed a lot. I’m grateful to the director for helping me realize this, and I want to love and support this special family in my own way.

Ten’ for sure! I already blurted out he was my rival to his face, but there's a reason I absolutely don't wanna let him beat me out…! But, I respect him just as much as I see him as a rival— he’s an important guy.
Q2: Is there a role you’d like to do in a future production?
Since I’m the runt of the Autumn Troupe, I’m thinkin’ there’re only so many roles that’ll come my way. Which is exactly why I wanna do a role where I needa make up for my physical size with my acting. Doesn’t playing a giant sound like it’d be so worth?
Q3: From your perspective, Mr. Nanao, who would be the in the top 3 of a “Guys in MANKAI Company Likely to be Popular with the Ladies” ranking?
I getcha— you’re testing my observational skills as a guy who studies popularity on the daily! By the Taichi Nanao scale, Masumi’s number one, Ban’ and Itaru tie for second, and at number 3 is a dark horse— Omi! Why Omi, you ask? Hehe! You’d get it if you were roommates with him.
Q4: Where would you go for a first date?
F-F-F-First date? First you gotta make a detailed plan, then you gotta check the place out twice if it’ll be good rain or shine, right? So how ‘bout, like, the aquarium-- am I right?! Since it’s dim, it’d be easy to hold hands… you’re saying my intentions are totally obvious!? I’ll rethink it…
Q5: What kind of place is MANKAI Company to you?
Where I could finally show who I really am, a place that’s like living at home with family. I thought if I confessed my true feelings, they’d never ever forgive me. I love Autumn Troupe and Ms. Director for accepting everything.

Q1: Please tell us whom you consider to be your rival or whom you respect within your theater company.
My rival is… Settsu, from my same troupe. He’s an obnoxious guy who’s always looking for a fight, and I’m not just gonna take it. I respect Sakyo. The advice he gives me when I practice on my own is specific and helpful. He’s someone who likes getting involved with stuff, y’know.
Q2: Is there a role you’d like to do in a future production?
I was able to get up on the stage I’ve wanted to be on all this time. There’s that, and acting itself is just real fun. I’d gratefully play any role I get. …If I had to say though, I’d wanna act with Muku someday.
Q3: Besides acting, is there anything you absolutely won’t let fellow Autumn Troupe member Banri Settsu outdo you at?
Besides acting…? There’s gotta be somethin’. …Tch, can’t think of it. I wouldn’t go down in a fight, but I gave up fighting for the company. Well, s’ long as I can beat Settsu in acting, I’m good.
Q4: Please secretly share with us your recommended sweets.
… Recently, the strawberry rice cakes from “Biroudou” ‘ve been good. Azuma shared some with me after getting them from an old customer, and now I sometimes get ‘em too. Not sure what sort of “customer” they are, though.
Q5: What kind of place is MANKAI Company to you?
On stage, I can be somebody else. It’s the place I’ve been looking for. …They accept me for who I am. I’m nothing but grateful to the director and the other guys. Not that I could say it to their faces.

If we’re talkin’ “rivals”… well, it’s Hyodo pretty much. ’s not like he’s got anything on me, just that if we’re going with “guy in the company you don’t wanna lose to,” it’s him for sure. I’m never gonna lose.
Q2: Is there a role you’d like to do in a future production?
Ahh… I get bored real easy, y’know? So I’d wanna do somethin’ totally different for every production. I get that bit where how difficult it is is how worthwhile it is, so whatever the role, I wanna do it right and prove I’ve got what it takes to the director, and Sakyo, and such.
Q3: Besides acting, is there anything you absolutely won’t let fellow Autumn Troupe member Juza Hyodo outdo you at?
Hey, I already said he got nothin’ on me! …Except that sweet tooth, I’ll give him that. Anyway, something he’d never one-up me at would be… having good taste, right? He’s the type that’d give the director a shinai for her birthday. I’ve got this in the bag.
Q4: Mr. Settsu, given your wild and cool image, please tell us when you have felt “at peace.”
Ahh, like the time when my party in “Blood Wars”* chain combo’d special attacks and killed the Hell Maze boss in one turn. You don’t get me? Whatever. …Oh, Itaru is nodding furiously over there.
Q5: What kind of place is MANKAI Company to you?
The place that gave me motivation and something to sink my teeth into. Hate to admit it, but since I came here my boredom’s been completely cured. Plus I don’t hate any of the guys here. …Oh, except Hyodo. You better write that in there.

We cover different areas, but I think me and Yukkii majorly inspire each other as fellow designers! It’s mega important to have someone who can inspire you nearby! And like, I think I kinda admire Aririn’s unique word choice! Still over the top, tho’!
Q2: Is there a role you’d like to do in a future production?
Anything goes as long as I can perform with everyone! I mean, I’d dig a cool role, but really I’m not picky at all~ As a designer, I kinda wanna try a sci-fi sorta thing! Hold on a sec, I’m gonna LIME Tsuzurun about it like right now!
Q3: Please tell us the reason why you decided to go to an arts university.
Cuz it seemed like it'd make me popular! ….But JK! I wanted to go to art school just cuz I loved painting, plain and simple! And to do that you need the complex skill of “Japanese-style painting,” so it’s like a way of stepping up my game, or like, “the more challenging it is the more fired up I get”, kinda thing! I’m working on a new portfolio right now, so I’ll show you my stuff next time, ‘kay? ♪
Q4: What kind of underclassman was Spring Troupe’s Tsuzuru Minagi during your high school days?
Sorta plain, and always had this air of misfortune hanging around him, sorta feeling? But, he was good at looking after his classmates and underclassmen, so everyone liked him, I think. He’s what you’d call a legit "big bro" type? Not much different from now, y’know.
Q5: What kind of place is MANKAI Company to you?
A get-you-hype, woot woot, tooootally sick company! Aaaand, it’s like, my “buddies”~, or like “friends”~… it’s the place where mega important people I can’t just label like that are….yeah ♪
