Different Types of Anesthesia

A certified registered nurse anesthetist (CRNA) provides patients with one of several types of pain medication, called anesthesia, throughout surgical procedures. Patients often receive anesthesia prior to operations but may continue to receive pain medication during and following an operation. In addition to administering the medication, CRNAs are tasked with monitoring patients throughout medical procedures, ensuring that they remain asleep or pain-free for the duration and that all biological functions continue as normal. CRNAs administer several different types of anesthesia.
Anesthesia can be broken down into four major categories: general anesthesia, IV/monitored sedation, regional anesthesia, and local anesthesia. General anesthesia is the type of pain medication most people think of when they hear the word "anesthesia." It is administered before major surgical operations, ranging from open heart surgery to appendectomies. Without the level of pain management provided by anesthesia, these types of operations would not be possible.
After the administration of general anesthesia, the patient loses consciousness and becomes completely unaware of the events of the procedure. In some cases, CRNAs administer general anesthesia as a gas by placing a mask over the patient's nose and mouth, though it can also be provided intravenously, usually as an IV in the arm. General anesthesia slows down many biological systems, and CRNAs provide continued support to make sure the body remains healthy and functional.
For instance, care providers may need to insert a tube into the patient's throat to help sustain breathing. Anesthesia professionals also monitor the patient's heart rate, blood pressure, and other vital signs. They will continue to monitor patients following the operation as the medication is reversed and the patient gradually regains consciousness. Medical professionals can help patients manage anesthesia symptoms, which range from nausea and vomiting to chills.
General anesthesia is similar to IV/monitored sedation, especially deep IV/monitored sedation. IV/monitored sedation occupies a middle ground between general anesthesia and local anesthesia. As the name suggests, local anesthesia is administered to a small and very specific, or localized, part of the body, such as when a patient requires stitches. Patients not only stay awake after receiving local anesthesia but remain alert and aware of their surroundings. They may feel some pressure at the site of the operation, but should not feel any pain.
In addition to stitching deep wounds, medical professionals may administer local anesthesia while resetting a broken bone or performing a skin or breast biopsy. Patients should not expect any of the symptoms associated with general anesthesia, though they may later feel some soreness around the location of the operation. Patients may experience allergic reactions to local anesthesia, but this is a rare occurrence.
Finally, regional anesthesia is similar to local anesthesia, but it is used when a more widespread area of the body requires pain management. Doctors call for regional anesthesia when they want patients to remain awake during the procedure but need the patient to be numb from the waist down, for example, or another large part of the body.

According to a 2024 Gallup poll, nursing is the most trusted profession in the United States. However, the United States has seen waves of registered nurse availability primarily driven by the unavailability of nursing educators, unfavorable working conditions, career switches, and the surging demand for healthcare workers.
Several certifications and educational requirements are necessary for becoming a registered nurse in the United States. Registered nurses typically graduate from a nursing program offered by academic institutions at the bachelor (BSN) and associate (ADN) levels. BSN stands for Bachelor of Science in Nursing, while ASN means Associate of Science in Nursing. While both levels carry the same weight, the BSN remains broader, covering more medical and general coursework. BSN also provides nurses with more career prospects and higher pay.
Prospective nurses take the NCLEX-RN exam after graduating from the nursing program. This exam covers the nursing process, teaching and learning, caring and communication, and documentation. Some states may take additional measures, like conducting background checks, before they issue the license to practice nursing.
Registered nurses specialize in different areas depending on their interests and the key functions they intend to perform. For instance, there are medical-surgical, critical care or ICU, addiction, public health, occupational, gastroenterology, and neonatal nurses.

Regional anesthesia numbs larger body areas, such as an entire limb or section of the torso. Before administration, doctors recommend temporary lifestyle and medication adjustments. Patients may need to cease smoking and alcohol consumption and abstain from eating for а set period before surgery.
To ensure safety, the anesthesiologist reviews the patient's medical history to determine potential drug interactions and may recommend pausing certain medications, including herbal supplements. They then brief the patient on the procedure and expected outcomes. A thorough surgical site evaluation is vital to detect infections, scarring, or any issues that could complicate the anesthesia administration.
When ready for the procedure, the doctor positions the patient appropriately for surgical access and comfort. They then place monitors to watch key health metrics such as blood pressure, pulse, and breathing. Anesthetic administration happens intravenously or through a tube, and upon injection, the medicine diffuses through the target region, inducing numbness. The regional technique carries specific risks such as infections, bleeding due to blood vessel injury, prolonged numbness, and damage to the tissues surrounding the injection area. Despite these risks, it is safer than the general anesthesia technique and offers a favorable risk-benefit profile in appropriate clinical scenarios.
Doctors monitor patients in a recovery room post-surgery as the anesthetic wears off. They also provide discharge instructions that patients must follow for quick recovery, including protecting the anesthetized part/region by avoiding putting pressure and weight, emphasizing alcohol and substance use abstinence, adequate rest, and avoiding driving temporarily.

Fascial plane blocks are a technique that entails injecting local anesthetics into the fascial planes (connective tissue layers that separate different body structures) rather than targeting specific nerves.
