The reason Fjord was so terrible at handling Kiri (holding her like a kitten, giving her a dagger, etc) is not because he disliked her but because all the reference he has regarsing children treatment is the horrible abuse he endured at the orphanage. He has no real referent to how a loving parent should handle a small child.
