before he left for a mission, you were always there at the gates to tell him “good luck” and brought him small presents

you’ve never given up though, and you didn’t plan to.

but today was different.

team 3 was coming back from a failed mission. you didn’t know too much about it though.

you watched as they said their goodbyes, heading in opposite directions

you stopped neji and said, “hey neji, can i talk to you for a sec?” he looked hesitant for a second, then nodded.

the hyuga looked more tense than usual, but you thought nothing of it. he was probably just tired from his mission, right?

“so..how was your mission? was it easy? i bet it was!” you beamed. “how the mission went is none of your business, y/n. now what do you want?” he sighed “someone’s a little grumpy today” you teased. he just glared at you in return.

“so..uhm, how come you’ve never accepted any of the gifts i’ve gave you? do you not like them or-” neji cut you off. “-i never asked for your childish gifts in the first place. i don’t have to accept something i don’t want or need.”

his words stung. “but i’ve tried to be really nice to you and i take time out of my day to make presents for you..” you began to trail off

“again, i never asked you to be nice, or to make me your pitiful gifts. grow up already, y/n. this is getting annoying.” he spat

your throat began to feel hot and tight and your eyes began to sting, tears building up on your lashes. you lowered your head so neji couldn’t see your face. you thought it would just add to your embarrassment.

as neji walked away, he mentally hit himself. ‘why did i say all of that? i didn’t even mean it’ he thought. then he heard sniffling. he stopped for a second, internally debating whether he should go and comfort your or keep walking.

he turned around and saw you crying. “...y/n..i would like to apologi-“ “-no, neji. don’t even finish that sentence. why do you hate me? all i ever do is try to please you, and in return you treat me like shit. i’m sorry for annoying you, but it doesn’t matter if you like me back or not. that gives you no right to constantly call me ‘childish’ or ‘pathetic’. you constantly put me down when i’m simply just being a decent human being, and trying to win your affection.”

he was shocked. he never meant to make you feel like that. he wasn’t sure what his intentions were in the first place. all he knew was that he loved you. and it scared him.

now you were the one walking away. neji quickly grabbed your wrist. “let go of me.” you said meekly.

he sighed and said “y/n please, listen.” you said nothing.

“i never meant to make you feel like that. i’m sorry, it was wrong of me, and i don’t expect you to forgive me right away. but please know that you don’t annoy me, at all. it’s quite the opposite, actually.” he muttered the last part lol

“stop messing around neji. you literally just said ‘i was annoying’, and that ‘i should grow up.’” you frowned.

“i know, and believe me when i say i didn’t mean any of it. the truth is, i’m actually quite fond of you.” neji huffed out. he let go of your wrist
