My First Post in a While
Somehow my first post in ages has to do with a game series I totally did not grok back when I was still actively posting back six years ago.
I started playing Pokémon Violet last night. It is the counterpart to my wife choosing to play Scarlet. So far I have only created the character and done some of the base game tutorial, as in still only as far as the first Pokécenter/mart.
I have only really been playing Pokémon games for a short time. I only have Let’s Go! Pikachu, Shield, and Shining Pearl under my belt so far. All of which I have adored playing. I am quite happy my wife let me borrow her copy of LG!P to see if I could get into the more modern games.
Anyway, traditionally I always make my characters in games--that allow customization--with certain parameters. This time I stepped out of my normal comfort zone and am quite happy with the changes. Not going to detail them here, but those who know me probably know.

My character
My apologies if this is not as exciting as it should be, it is my first post in years and I do not want to talk about spoilers of a game that just came out yesterday.

トップをねらえ!御負け 03-04 PV [WIP]
Gunbuster 03-04 Promotional Video.
Sample of what the Trailer subtitle track on the BluRay of Gunbuster WIP is looking like. There are some parts I am not 100% certain about, but this is how it looks right now. I have been forced to trim some from teh opening and closing as they pushed the video over the 5m limit for Tumblr.
From what I can assume, Gainax used a VHS copy when they transferred this to BluRay. The quality is much lower than expected, but still nice. It does seem to be very spoiler heavy though. I often forget how bad spoilers were in the 80′s and 90′s in PV.
PM me with any suggestions.

I get to the final two Ponies in the Mane 6.
As of last night, I finished watching the thirteenth episode of the fifth season. This, as far as I am aware, brings me current with all the episodes which have aired, not including any of the spin-off series.
I am not very sure if there is more than one spin-off, but so far I have been avoiding Equestria Girls. This is intentional as I made the mistake of running a search for one of the Ponies on a *booru image board and found my eyes assaulted with more MLP Equestria Girls straight porn than I could deal with. Some of it still remains burned into my brain. Would any of you happen to have some Brain Bleach? No, the anime Bleach is not acceptable.
I wanted to take the time to re-iterate my previous sentiments about Twilight Sparkle. At the time I wrote that blog, I had not yet watched the fifth season, and it once again reinforced my opinions of her.
So, on to the two Ponies of the Mane 6 whom I actually like.
The first is Rainbow Dash. Right of the top, let me say, this one still surprises me. I really did not like her until the 16th episode of the second season, which is technically episode 42.
No, the underlying humour of that point has not escaped me.
Before then I saw her as an annoying tomboy who was hyper-obsessed with speed and looking cooler than any other, no matter who it may have hurt. This was really apparent in the seventh episode of season two, or the 33rd episode overall, “May the Best Pet Win.”
A quick synopsis : Rainbow Dash finds out everyone else has pets by accidentally finding their regularly scheduled playdate. She is told she was never invited because she has no pet, and it is ridiculous for her to join the group for a pet playdate if she has no pet. Obviously she feels she is being left out of something cool, so she decides she wants a pet. She then proceeds to ignore every suggestion given to her by Fluttershy, yes the animal expert Pony, on what would be a good pet for her have. Her reason is none other than they are not cool enough. This leads to a competition in which Rainbow Dash tramples over the innocent feelings of many animals who really want nothing more than to be the best pet they can be. Even though she redeems herself with the pet she chooses, she does so at the expense of other pets feelings.
Now, this may not seem like much, but her element is that of loyalty. Let me say that again. She is the embodiment of loyalty. However, she was always putting herself ahead of all the others. Especially when it had anything to do with the WonderBolts. Equestria’s version of the Thunderbirds, or Blue Angels if you want to use the Navy. Considering they wear blue, you decide.
However, in the 42nd episode she illustrated for the first time, true character growth. Even if it was embarrassing for her to admit it, she grew to start liking to read. A pursuit she had previously considered uncool, or the realm of eggheads. She became hooked on a book loaned her by Twilight about the MLP version of Indiana Jones, by the name of Daring Do. After which she not only wants to read the rest of the series of books, but another aspect of her opens up and she becomes less focused on being 20% cooler than anything else and actually starts to behave like her element.
I am going to skip over her early rivalry with Applejack, as it was told to me as much worse than it really was. I am also going to only mention in passing her love of practical jokes, which seemed to really tame down after her old friend Gilda was introduced. It seemed like it was something conjured for that one episode then almost never mentioned again.
There is another aspect of her which I am very able to relate to, which I think also helped a lot in my starting to like her more than I had previously. It was the episode where I started to soften to her, overall episode 41, the 15th episode of the second season, “The Super Speedy Cider Squeezy 6000″, in which her primary purpose was to just obsess over, and never get, any of the Apple Families fresh, but limited, Apple Cider. In many ways I also obsess over apple cider.
I still do not think she actually embodies her assigned element, but I do believe she has gone through a lot of character growth through the series. I feel she is perhaps the one Pony who started as one thing with one path, but has managed to grow into the same thing, but going down a different path.
So then, if Rainbow Dash is a bad fit for the title of the element of Loyalty, who is the best fit?
I am happy you asked, because now we get to Applejack.
My wife likes to point out, I had not even finished the first episode and I had already, as she says, “... latched on to Applejack and never let go.” I think she is mostly accurate there.
Remember, before starting the series I really knew nothing about the Ponies, other than I liked the design of Princess Luna, and I had read over some of the linked to me Princess Molestia stories. So, I really had nothing to start with. No pre-conceptions to get in the way. Not even any knowledge about the series from the 80′s in which it seems, my wife actually had to look it up for me to verify, Applejack was in as well.
Applejack is the brave, strong, reliable, older sister type Pony. I say the because she is the only one who embodies those features. But, more than anything, she is the most loyal of all Ponies. Even to her own detriment, her loyalty is far beyond what even her assigned element, honesty, is illustrated.
It is true she has a younger sister, Apple Bloom, whom she is constantly worried about, and fawning over in an attempt to make certain she is well cared for, and protected from the evils of Equestria. But, it is not just her sister she is that way with. She has an Older Sister approach to everyone else on Sweet Apple Acres. That includes her grandmother, Granny Smith, and her older brother, Big Mackintosh. This would be expected by most, but it does not stop there. She takes this attitude with everyone. She genuinely cares about them all.
That is not enough to take me in. It usually takes something special, and over many posts through the blogs here, I am certain I have mentioned my weakness for accents. Though I prefer the 80′s [San Fernando] Valley Girl accent most, I am also attracted to the United States Southern Drawl accent, which she has. I also find her mannerism of using the name “Sugarcube” as an affectionate term to be very enchanting.
I have to honestly say, I enjoy listening to her talk.
She is the most rounded character in the series. She is almost a Mary Sue type when you think about it. She is an athlete on equal levels with Rainbow Dash, she is a capable cook, which takes over some of Pinkie Pie’s realm, and she is often shown to be stronger than Bulk Biceps. She is shown to be skilled in playing both a banjo and a fiddle, which is very close to the violin, one of the instruments I loved to play. She was even shown to be capable of stopping a stampede with no help, just her and her pet dog.
She is not all good aspects. She is perhaps the most stubborn of all the cast. Multiple times she has let that stubborn aspect take over. The first time being in the third episode, where her Pride would not let her admit she was not able to buck the entire Sweet Apple Acres harvest on her own. It led to her competing with Rainbow Dash in a competition of who is the most athletic, in which both believed the other was cheating. She ruins a sleepover due to her being thickheaded with Rarity, and she even believes she know vampire fruit bats better than Fluttershy, and leads to an even worse situation.
She is also, in my opinion, the most empathetic of the cast. She is the only one who regularly picks up on subtle clues which show one of the others, Mane 6 or Minor Rest, are in some form of distress. In addition, she is always trying to do things for others. Be it her willingness to take the long way around a mountain with Fluttershy, so the others can stop being impatient, her constant stopping others from acting rash, especially Rainbow Dash, or, even her constant attempts to do things for her sister, even to a fault.
There are two other features of Applejack which I am drawn toward. They are things that remind me of my wife. She is a diligent worker, self employed really, who puts a great emphasis on family. It is true, the definition of family can change from person to person, but I honestly never really knew what family was, or could be, until I married my wife, and it has become important to me. Applejack loves her family, and she would give them all of Equestria if that was what it took in order for them to be safe, healthy, and happy.
Finally, there is a side of her personality I find to be extremely cute. How easily supernatural events can scare her. I know I said she was the bravest Pony out there, but understand, bravery is knowing your fear is right around the corner, and rounding that corner because you have to. She does not run from her fears, but she will let them show. A good example is from the ninth episode of the first season, Bridle Gossip, when Pinkie Pie is singing her song, “Evil Enchantress”. Applejack is shown to be scared six seconds in. This only manages to add to the cuteness factor.
Now I am actually wishing I had a nice Applejack figure.

Lost my first Support Team Member in a battle with Boss of floor 78.
Her name was Camila. I had helped her with a quest previous. She was happy to have had the help. She sent me in game messages thanking me and I really felt happy for her. All she wanted was to be stronger.
It is a good game that despite the horrible Google-Translation on the script can make you feel for a loss of another character who is not even part of your core guild members. This game does that for me.
I hope to prevent any further needless loss in the future.

Continuing with the discussions about the My Little Pony : Friendship is Magic brings us to the two in the Mane 6 whom I think of as the average ponies. A part of the discussion which I am finding to be much more hard than I thought it would be. Mostly as one of the two was actually in my list of not very interesting until late in the episodes I have seen, and the other is either the favorite pony of most of my friends, or in my wife situation, one of her two favorite ponies. With that in mind, a part of me is actually not wanting to accidentally offend them. At the same time, I have a policy of being honest in my reviews, and if that makes my review unpopular, then I will accept it. Then there is a final issue I am faced with. As they are both mostly average to me, it means they have very few traits which I find worthy of writing about. Starting with the pony Rarity, I really have not managed to grok what her actual purpose is. She is obsessed with image. That is pretty much her entire character. With her everything is about either impressing the most recently introduced character with how upper class she is. And, when she does not get her way, it becomes a worst possible thing ever scenario. Add to that the way she treats Spike, constantly using him, stringing him along, as if he is nothing but her personal slave/servant. It reminds me so much of so many movies of the 80's where the mostly hot lead girl is trying to get together with super-jock, but he is too busy proving his name, Major Stanley Upper-Crust the Third, is more than just a name, but a way of life, all the while she is missing the poor friend-zoned nerd, played by Anthony Michael Hall, is trying to get her to notice him as more than a breathing hand truck. She is not all bad. As I stated in a previous post, one of the best early song sets, first season, was both "The Art of the Dress" and "The Art of the Dress (reprise)". Even if the episode in which it was played was not very interesting to me, there was a great deal of effort given to the song with the intent to show us exactly how dedicated she is to her art. None of these points explain the scene that elevated her in my eyes. It was really a simple thing, which probably went unnoticed by many others. In one of her childish fits, she is laying on her couch, and is shoveling giant spoonfuls of ice cream into her mouth. This is some thing I am perfectly able to relate to. Though, in my situation, I do not have the telekinetic powers to summon an endless supply of cartons like she does. It actually made me envious. Next on the list is the most complicated one to give an opinion about. I really have nothing of interest to say about Twilight Sparkle. She is, of course, the series protagonist. She is sent by their benevolent ruler to a small town to learn what is rumored to be the most important lesson ever. The meaning and/or value of friendship. While doing this, she is unwillingly dragged into having friends, mostly by a royal decree. And, at the end of every episode, she is required by the princess to write a letter in forming her of the moral lesson the episode focused on. Some thing Western Animations seem to focus on more than is healthy. In many ways Twilight Sparkle is the definition of Mary Sue. She is in possession of the most powerful magic in existence. She has the trust of the entire royal family. She is given near unlimited authority and trust by all around her. In all realities, after her transformation, the only flaw she has is her insecurity in her own abilities, which is always resolved by the end of the episode. This small issue makes her a very boring character overall to me. Not worthy of being liked, but also not worthy of being disliked. It is not her fault she is gifted with these powers and abilities, but at the same time it is her fault she is constantly insecure. And if it takes a magical transformation for her to even become half able to believe in herself, especially after all she has accomplished, with the help of her friends, then it is very poor character development in my opinion. Now, I am sure there are people out there who are on Team Twilight Sparkle who could easily cite to me arcs, episodes, stories, moments, or any thing really, where Twilight Sparkle has shown extreme character development, in their eyes. However, one of the requirements for it to be effective is a some, not all, to be easily recalled by the person doing the review. At this time, I am unable to recall any major character development which dealt with her primary flaws. No, going from "I need no friends other than books" in episode one to "These are my best friends and they mean more to me than life it self" later in the series does not count as it was imposed upon her by her teacher Princess Celestia. As an example to illustrate her complete lack of understanding true friendship as anything other than a means of getting something in return, in her situation the living batteries which power the ultimate magic she controls, I would like to present her every interaction with Discord. Despite all of her lectures on what true friendship is, and her constant statements of friendship being an open door to all, she treats him with mistrust, dislike, and often underhanded behavior. The one pony who is the possessor of the greatest magic ever, the magic of friendship, has to be conned into doing the right thing by Fluttershy. You remember Fluttershy? She values the lessons of friendship so much more than Twilight Sparkle that she manages to con both Discord and her closest friends into treating each other as friends. Even so, Twilight Sparkle still treats Discord as an outcast whom she has to tolerate. If I was not so ambivalent to her, I would seriously dislike her for this one trait. *I am writing this on an aircraft, and if I forget to add in images or notes, please forgive me.

Usually, about now, people who have watched the Ponies, and have take time to write about them, start talking about how amazing the series is, or about the reason their favorite of the Mane 6, and why it is so much better than the invention of a computerized rice steamer. I have no intention of doing that to those of you kind enough to read this. Do I have a favorite pony? I would have to say, “Yes, there is one I related to and kind of started liking from the very first episode.” But, is that truly important at this time? Not really.
My original plan was to write about my least favorite three first, then my favorite three. But, really, that is an impossible thing for me to do. The main reason is, in my opinion, the things that make me like or dislike all but the one I am most fond of are the reason one should at least give the series a try.
Let me reword that for you. “It is the characters themselves and what they go through, the good and the bad, and how they develop and grow over time, that makes the series something worth watching.” Sadly, for many of those who really need to give in to social pressure and keep their macho image or that insecurity they hide behind the statement, “I am an adult who has no time for kiddie shows.” You may never actually get the chance to enjoy the series in any way. But, seriously, if that is the reason, you have much bigger issues than missing the series.
The rest of you, the free thinkers, the average people, the ones who like to take some time and enjoy life, and maybe relax with a more soft-hearted story, you should give it a try.
Is it worth the attention the Brony Fandom gives it? In a word, “No!” In a more expressive manner, “No, it is good, but it is in no way a competitor for the level of story, character development, or quality of animation that was given to us by both Avatar : The Last Airbender, or Avatar : The Legend of Korra. I would not even give it the honor of the same level as Steven Universe. I am bias toward both overt and implied yuri, so my opinion may be subject to unfair influence.
It is a good idea for me to explain just how complicated it is for me to provide a unbiased viewpoint. I have made no secret to anyone that name of my least favorite character of the Mane 6. Please, forgive me all who disagree, but I really have no love, or like, of the character Pinkie Pie. She is loud, obnoxious, with a high pitched voice that I imagine shares much in common with dragging thousands of pinkie mice across an industrial cheese grater. Despite the belief of many I have met, even in the pinkie stage of life, those mice can still cry out in pain and terror. She can also be very self centered, full of terrible jokes, and the bouncy method she springs around the world is hard on the eyes. At the same time, she is the one who is able to break the fourth wall. Which she does on a non-regular basis. One could say she is the one who is the most interactive with the audience. She is also the only one, as shown in “Party of One”, who is ever given Yandere tendencies. In fact the most close ever shown was Fluttershy at the Grand Galloping Gala, when the animals at the palace were avoiding her. That one scene made me much more open minded toward Pinkie Pie, which helped much later when she was spending time with the Apple Family, an episode I enjoyed.
Another character I am not very fond of, which both my wife and one of my closest friends claim as their favorite, or one of the two favorite in my wife words, is Fluttershy. In my opinion she has not actually undergone any true character development in the entire four seasons I have watched. She has learned lessons, made changes, and had limited growth. But, other than the interactions she had with Discord, who I affectionately refer to as Q, all of her potential growth reverts by the next episode. One could claim the ending of episodes which focus on her has her stating some thing similar to, “but I just need a little more time.” is a recognition of her growth, but is her shyness showing through. I would respond with, “Such is a lazy writing tool to allow the team to recycle the same stories with the same character over and over again.” This does not mean she is without good points. Her general kindness, love of animals, and ability to manipulate others are all admirable traits. But, again, with few other exceptions, other than her interactions with Discord, she is a mostly drab and dull character by the end of the episode. Next time I will continue to address more of the Mane 6. Possibly taking time to focus more on Twilight Sparkle and Rarity. The two I would say are just average.

I have a policy of giving any new series at least one half of the first season before I make a decision about if I like it or not. I have only ever violated this policy when I was watching Ikki Tousen and Najika Blitz Tactics. I am a fan of fanservice, however the series needs to be more than just a fragile vessel for the presentation of fanservice. Two good examples of series which are known for great amounts of fanservice, but also have an engaging story are Highschool of the Dead and Strike Witches.
This meant, no matter what happened, I was bound by my rules to watch at least 13 episodes, or rounded up was 15. A total of five nights as I watch series in sets of three episodes per night.
I told you all in the original post, the only true thing I knew was that I liked the character design for Princess Luna. I was not aware of her having an alternate persona, that of Nightmare Moon. So, it is very honest to say I really had no idea what I was getting in to.
I really found the openings of the series to be uneventful. I was unable to see what it was so many of my friends saw which led to their obsessions with the series. After the first three episodes finished, my wife explained to me how the character Spike was actually in the original 80′s series. She also told me Applejack was one of the original Ponies, though she did look different.
As we continued, I was actually annoyed by a number of things. The first was found in the Opening Theme, which is from Twilight Sparkles viewpoint. The contradiction between Twilight Sparkles actual feelings about Friendship, which were much more blase, in a “Who needs friends anyway?” attitude, in the actual series, while the song sang of her desire to embrace friendship as if it was the most important component in her life.
The second thing was the music. I stated in the original post regarding this series, the best way to draw me into a series is for it to have well done music. And, for most of the first half of the season, I was constantly exposed to the shrieking sounds of Pinkie Pie and her attempt to sing. I actually remarked at one point it was a good thing I was not watching on a CRT as I did not wish to have to clean up the mess caused by a shattered tube.
This Music issue remained for a period of many nights, until the song “winter Wrap Up” was played in Episode 11. This was the first actual song which I found was well done. Later, in episode 14, Rarity singing “The Art of the Dress” was also well done. Both the first and reprise.
The song which really drew me in was “At the Gala”, which was played in the final episode of the first season. It was not only well composed, well written, and well performed, but it qualifies in my opinion as an 11 o'clock number, which is defined in musical theatre as a large show stopping song that is late in the second act of a two act musical. I am aware it was not in the proper time slot for the episode, but if one was to assume the first season was a single show, it was almost perfectly placed.
It was episode 12 where I found I became annoyed with the series. The first episode where the adventures of the Cutie Mark Crusaders began. I still, even after 4 seasons of watching episodes, I feel there was only one which was not just filler. I will talk about that episode in a later post as it was actually quite nice. As a general viewpoint, I feel the Blank Flanks provide no actual benefit to the series with the episodes which focus on their attempts to force their cutie marks.
However, when they are used as just characters, in the same way most of the other supporting cast is used, they are often very good additions to the episode. Even in the episodes where they are one of the main characters, works well.
It is also important to point out, one of the other places the series excels is the supporting cast. A great deal of effort is placed in character development, and it truly shows. It would have been easy for the creators to use standard tropes, or build cookie cutter archetypes, but they consistently drop hints, explanations, and just give the audience a large cast of slowly revealed, but developed cast to enjoy.
I would assume, this would lead to a large amount of the fandom who would focus on much more than just the Mane Six, as I learned they were referred to while watching the third season. I am not sure if that is actually the truth, but I would be surprised if it was not.
In the next part, I actually hope to start addressing the Mane 6 themselves.
Below find the songs I refer to.

Some Thoughts about My Little Pony : Friendship is Magic
Where do I even start? Perhaps it would be a good idea to give some history of my own personal interactions with Hasbro, My Little Pony, and MLP:FiM. I hope it will be very short.
Other than a Cease and Desist Order I once received from Hasbro as an admin of an auction site, I have an entire zero history to give. I never watched any of the original series. I never had any of the toys. I am told by my wife there was a movie in the 80′s, which I am very ignorant of. I really have no history.
I did, however have a large amount of friends and acquaintances who would not stop harassing me about the new series. They would rave about it and spend what seemed like days of time trying to woo me with this amazing animated series they were certain was the best thing ever.
Keep in mind, most of these people were also people who would ignore every time I would suggest a new, to them at least, anime to watch based on how good I thought it was. It is actually a very lonely place being an anime/manga otaku with friends who have a barely passing interest in it.
I have not actually found many western animated series I liked. Sometimes I would find an episode or two of a series ** which I could like, but on the whole I found almost ever animated series made in the west was designed to be nothing more than an extremely long commercial designed to sell toys.
There have also been some series which I really had no interest in, other than the opening theme music ***. In fact, one of the best ways to get me to look at something seriously is to appeal to me with music which is found in the series. That is exactly how I was taken in by Rock&Rule. It was how I ended up being a fan of Susan Roman.
Over time a number of my friends would send me Pony related links. Usually a captioned image, or a meme. Most of the time I had no idea what I was looking at. None of the in-jokes made sense. However, other than the rare link, most of my friends accepted I was not ready to watch a series which I felt the entire world was trying to cram this series at me in an attempt to get me to give in. The one true exception was a friend who would forward me random page links from the Princess Molestia website.Often I found I enjoyed the comics he would pre-screen for me.
There was also a comic series he forwarded to me which I enjoyed reading. It was the actual images. I never saw the site, so I am not aware of the title. But, it involved one of the ponies killing the others and making baked goods with their corpses. But, he was very adamant the story I was reading had nothing in common with the actual series.
Over time I did develop a certain affinity for the visual design of the character Princess Luna. However I was told she was quite rare in the story.
When I combined all of this together with listening to some friends trying to explain and imitate what makes Pinkie Pie their favourite character, out of context, it left me very much wanting to avoid the series in entirety.
But, about the time the fifth season started airing, my wife discovered a series created in the west which had a slow start, but had managed to quickly take a position as one of the best western titles I have seen. Then she found another. So, one day I decided, “I should give the Pony series a try.”
I try hard to not pre-judge things, and I felt that I had allowed my unhappiness with all the people who ignored my suggestions was actually a very petty reason to not at least give this other series a chance. I also felt, if Steven Universe and Gravity Falls were so good, then it is possible this Pony show could also be good.
I have now watched four seasons. Sometimes I enjoyed it, and sometimes I felt as if I was just enduring the series. With that in mind, I plan to write a number of posts over the next number of weeks which will explain many of my observations.
** Examples of series with episodes I liked.
Forgive my lack of links to episodes.
GI Joe S01E154-155 : There’s No Place Like Springfield
Jem and The Holograms : Too many to list.
Transformers S02E25 : The Golden Lagoon
Transformers S02E38 : The Girl Who Loved Powerglide
*** Examples of series with good music but moderate stories.
