conTEMPORARY Art
( A brief review on Alice G Guillermo’s Philippine Contemporary Aesthetics)
Our tradition plays a big role in the Philippine Contemporary Aesthetics. It involves our different cultural beliefs which are still practiced by the indigenous people in the Philippines. Even though we were influenced by other countries, which altered our way of living. We must find a way for us to learn the heritage of Filipinos by tracing back to our roots. The indigenous people from different tribes living in the remote areas, where modernization hasn’t reached yet were somehow the only ones who have managed to keep our original beliefs alive. We must not just know and learn about those beliefs thus we need to embody and practice it for it defines who we are.
May people still make handicrafts by weaving abaca fibers to make baskets as a form of art as well as their primary source of income. Therefore, we must express our gratitude to artists who are making art made from our own resources which makes our art known around the world. Tradition may have a tension to what people may follow because of the modernization which is spreading rapidly. Different lines used in art may convey different meanings or emotions which the artist wants to express through his/her art. Art from different countries may differ from ours because of its certain characteristics and qualities that makes it unique. It may contain symbols, the use of different oils, and materials which must be preserved, needs to be recognized by other people that the art we are making shows our different values and beliefs handed down from folk people. A kind of art that tells stories.
