NAIDOC stands for National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee. Its origins can be traced to the emergence of Aboriginal groups in the 1920′s which sought to increase awareness in the wider community of the status and treatment of Indigenous Australians. It is a time to celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history, culture and achievements and is an opportunity to recognise the contributions that Indigenous Australians make to our country and our society. 151 years ago, 1866. June 27. John Boyle O'Reilly ’s trial began by Court Martial at Royal Barracks. Treason is his crime, death is his sentence. However, he had only 22 years old. His sentence was commuted to life imprisonment and 20 years penal servitude. And later on, transportation to the British Colony: Western Australia. Aboard the Hougoumont ship. From that point on he spent around 15 months in some of England’s most notorious prisons such as Millbank, Pentonville and Dartmoor, O'Reilly attempted to escape twice but was quickly recaptured and placed in solitary confinement.

Watch here, at the Hougoumont Hotel’s Page, his steps. We will keep tracking his journey until the arrival of the Hougoumont on 9th January 1868. In 2018 it will complete 150 years and we cannot wait for the beautiful festival that Fremantle Community is preparing for all of us. COUNTDOWN IS ON. Fenians, Fremantle & Freedom Festival it is.
