Artist Statement: My learning experience throughout this fast-paced course was pretty fun. Before taking this course, I would always draw either with a pencil and sketchbook or digitally. But after taking this course and using paint for the first time, I could say that painting is fun and quite relaxing. I also got to understand abstract art a bit more since, before taking this class, I never grasped the concept of it. I also learned more about the color wheel and what colors go well with each other. But before taking this class, I had learned a bit of the color wheel since my little brother has taken an art class before, and I would help him with his projects. All in all, my goals and expectations for next semester is to study more about colors and improve on my painting and drawing skills.

(6/15/21) Final with sketches

Artist Statement for Book Cover: For my book cover, I used a video games story line to create my own book cover, as well as the title of the book. For the artwork, I used a reference of the tower to create it with a few changes to it. Later, I added the terrain around the tower and below the character. This is to give the illusion that the tower is a bit far away.

This is the reference of the tower that I used but with some color changes.

Finally, this is the sketch of the book cover.

Artist Statement for Album Cover: For the album cover, I approached it by giving the artwork a 70s retro look and an abstract look. I used the grid background to make it look like it is from an old computer. The colors I used are red, yellow, light blue, and purple since the band logo uses those four colors.

Below is the sketch of the album cover.

Artist Statement: The colors I chose for my artwork are purple, dark blue, light blue, and green. I chose these four colors to give my artwork a sense of coolness. While working on the artwork, I would listen to my music, as it helps me plan on what shapes to use and where to place them.

For my composition, I decided to go a bit smaller with the shapes to show the negative space around them.

(5/16/21) Principles of Art
Repetition

The principle of repetition can be seen in M.C. Escher’s Bird Fish. In his artwork, you are able to see the outline of each fish in between the birds and ,therefore, are able to see a repeating pattern of the fish and the bird.
Variety

In Rudolf Stussi’s artwork titled Beach Veranda, he uses a lot of curved lines to create unique looking shapes on the house to give it a distorting effect. He also places a few bright colors besides dull colors to show that the sun is setting.
Rhythm

In Edvard Munch’s The Scream, he uses curved lines to create a flowing rhythm throughout his artwork.
Balance

In Flower Day (Dia de Flores) by Diego Rivera, you can see balance within his artwork, especially on the lady since the flowers behind her back are symmetrical and so is the couple in front of her.
Emphasis

Claude Monet’s painting titled Impression Sunrise, he uses emphasis on the sun that is setting above the horizon. He does this by making the sun a orange-red color, making it the main focus.
Scale and Proportion

In A Sunday on La Grande Jatte by Georges Seurat, he makes the people well-proportionate and the scale look normal to give the audience a sense of completeness.
Compositional Unity

Katsushika Hokusai’s The Great Wave Off Kanagawa shows compositional unity on the high waves to show the many small curves of those waves.

(5/10/21) First 2D Assignment
Franz Kline and Agnes Martin Notes
Both artist in these videos are completely different when it comes to their art. In Kline’s paintings he uses abstract expressionism by painting a white background and then he either uses black or other dark colors. However, in Martin’s paintings, she uses her emotions and complicated mathematics to paint her abstract artworks.
Franz Kline
Kline doesn’t divide his artwork evenly but rather with a random stroke of black paint. From there he would continue putting random strokes of black or dark colored paint until he finally achieves what he wants. His black or dark colored lines would depend on the motion his hand would go. This would make his lines either really thin or really thick, depending on his hand motion. When he starts painting he would start by painting the space white and he would then start with stroking black paint across his canvas.
