Where the Wild Things are: A Critical Analysis

POST MARXISM
Post-Marxism is a reaction to classical Marxism of materialism, economy, and class. This lens includes analysis on race, gender, class and nationality  as categories and divisions in society. It rejects the idea of grand narratives or meta narratives and view the importance of  mini narratives in history.
The movie Where the Wild Things Are (WTWTA) portrays how seniority was shown in Max’s family. The differences in age between his mother, his sister and Max can explain the way they treat Max inside their household. Max, being the youngest, may always feel unimportant because of the lack of attention he is getting from his family members. ( As shown in the movie, when he invited his sister to play with him in the snow and when his mother told him that his business is not as important as hers). Because of his young age, he was not given equal opportunity to speak up and have his thoughts express. Being misunderstood most of the time, Max escapes to the land of the Wild Things where in he was put in totally opposite situation.

Here in this place, because of him being different from them, he had acquired privileges which made him become their King. Since he was their King, he has the power to be heard and to be followed unlike when he was with his mom and sister. Judith’s character in the movie indicates oppression and “othering” as proposed in this Post-Marxist lens. Since she was always emotional and   often considered as the different one, she was always being left out and doesn’t have the equal opportunity to speak out. Since her experiences is the mini-narrative as compared to the grand narrative of the whole group, she was always considered as least important.

POSTSTRUCTURALISM
Society has set structures that we feel obliged to follow. It’s either a yes or a no, black or white, and the likes. Poststructuralism, however, promotes the deconstruction of these structures. Poststructuralism is geared towards our use of our personal experiences and how it affects the way we communicate.
Back in Max’s house, he felt as if he was an outsider in his own family. With scenes that showed him trying to get his sister and mother’s attention but being shut down at both instances. This made Max think that there are only two kinds of people, the bad guys and the good guys; his family as the bad guys and him as the good guys.
Tumblr media
When he ran away from home and ended up in the island of the Wild Things, Max slowly learned that there are more than just the binaries. He learned that the Wild Things had varying opinions and personalities but were still together and were able to accept Max. The Wild Things accepted him not because all of them liked him but because others talked them into accepting Max. Max learned that the differences in people is not enough to categorize them into bad or good.
Tumblr media
POST COLONIALISM
When Max came to a mysterious island he found the creatures living there in a turmoil. Max decided to show himself they tried to eat him but instead Max convinced them into making him their king.
Feeling misunderstood at home Max saw this as a chance into making a place where only the things he wants to happen will happen. And so he went on making the creatures do stuff he’s always wanted to do at home such as making them play a game very similar to a snowball fight and making them build a fort like he did back home.
Tumblr media
Desperate of having a leader and keeping order the creatures were happy to follow Max despite the fact that they have their own culture which Max was not familiar with. And so without being aware of it Max was changing the creatures’ way of living, similar to what colonialists do other countries.
Tumblr media
It was fine at first until the creatures decided that they do not understand Max’ actions, they confronted him and started questioning his authority. This is a manifestation of post colonial values of othering, belongingness, and imposing one’s identity.

The Narrative Paradigm
What is the main principle of the Narrative Paradigm?
The Narrative Paradigm states that humans are story-tellers and listeners. They prefer  narrative logic over conventional logic. Narrative logic states that the credibility of a speaker is judged by the audience by his coherence and fidelity. This paradigm gives a more equal treatment of audience as it does not require its audience to be properly trained in the art of rhetoric. The audience only needs to be familiar with the concept of coherence and fidelity.
How is the Narrative Paradigm different from the Constructivist Paradigm?
The Constructivist Paradigm says that the audience is active as they construct their knowledge based on their own experiences and how they apply it to their meaning-making. On the other hand, the Narrative Paradigm says that the audience is active as they know the world based on sequential events and sees it as a narrative and prefer listening to story-like rhetoric. While the Narrative Paradigm says that the audience only need to be knowledgeable on coherence and fidelity, the Constructivist Paradigm suggests that the audience need a certain degree of complexity for them to understand more of the rhetoric.
An article on the Philippines’ current state using the Narrative Paradigm
During the campaign period, President Duterte has been vocal about his hate for drugs and how he wishes to eradicate it from his beloved country. He even promised to eradicate it within six months or he will resign as president. However, it is now way past his deadline and the problem seems to be far from solved. It only created a series of new problems despite his claims of bringing change. It brought forth rampant extrajudicial killings and questions whether these suspects were even suspects at all.
People have learned to be fearful of the police and even question their motto which is “To serve and protect.” Despite these conflicts, the people have come together to fight. Despite the threat of a nation-wide Martial Law, the people still fight. Because what they’re fighting for is not themselves, but the country.

These were the common themes found in the top 40 recent comments posted on the article. The people who posted these comments may only know a certain degree about communication and thus resorted to the expressive category of communication based on the Message Design Logic. A common theme for them was either anti-dilawan and pro-marcos. These comments also fall under false dichotomy where they think it’s a Marcos vs Aquino battle.

Ever wonder how people around you construct their messages? Wonder no more!
Message Design Logics is the key!
WHAT IS MESSAGE DESIGN LOGIC?
It is the conception of communication that affects the kind of messages
people construct. Note that individuals differ on their definition of communication thus affecting the way they construct and employ messages.
WHAT ARE THE 3 TYPES OF MDLs?
          A. EXPRESSIVE
-the simplest form of message production, which is predicated on the notion that “language is a medium for expressing thoughts and feelings” (O’Keefe, 1988, p. 85).
                      - Focuses on the sender.
                      - concerned on what the sender whants to say (self-expresson). The sender pays no attention about the receiver and receiver's reaction. Most of the time,
they pays litte attention to context.
-Values openness, honesty, and clarity  but mistrusts people who are strategic
-have internal coherenxe that is subjective and associative
         B. CONVENTIONAL
                      -  built on understanding communication as “a game to be
played cooperatively, according to socially conventional rules and procedures” (O’Keefe & McCornack, 1987, p. 71).
                      - distinguishes between thought and expression, and subordinates and
specifies expression to the process of achieving desired social effects as opposed to the Expressive type.
                      - Concerned with appropriateness and doing the "right" thing in a situation
                      - Follows the rules of politeness. But, if appropriateness and politeness dominates, sender's goal of being effective may not happen.
          C. RHETORICAL
                      - “the creation and negotiation of social selves and situations” (O’Keefe,1988, p. 85)
                      -  perceive selves and situations as mutable rather than fixed and recognize communication as a process of coordination.
                      - holds communication to be successful and desirable to the extent that it is flexible and produces harmony and consensus.
                      -  tries to anticipate and prevent  problems by redefining the situation so that both parties will benefit in the interaction.
                      -  empathize on the receiver's reaction but  the receiver should also respond in the speaker's favor.

The critical tradition studies how people discourse on political struggles (race struggles, class struggles, etc.)
CRITICAL COMMUNICATION RESEARCH
Topic: WEIRD LAWS AND WHY THEY WERE CREATED
In some communities, there are laws that seem absurd to outsiders but probably normal to the locals of that community. The reason why these weird laws were created can be answered by the standpoint theory which states that a person’s viewpoint can be hanged by his daily experiences and the group that he is part of. Using this theory, it can be understood why these laws exist as it was catered for those living in the community.
Critiques
This tradition is mainly subjective and lack scientific methods in approaching problems.

The socio-cultural tradition is the study of how one’s culture affects how he communicates and develops
SOCIO-CULTURAL COMMUNICATION RESEARCH
Topic:BELONGING WITHOUT DISCRIMINATING
This study aims to help individuals belong and be comfortable in groups they belong to without feeling the need to discriminate other groups. For this study the Social Identity theory can be used.
Social identity theory emphasizes how important it is for individual to belong to a group as it can be a source of self-esteem. However, the theory also says that when an individual belongs to a group he tends to be discriminative against other groups in order to feel better about his own group.
