Something intriguing about Sarah's character is how freaking lonely that girl must be. She doesn't go to school so she doesn't have friends there like David does. Her family can't afford regular outings to the theater so she doesn't get to go there. It's the 19th century which means it's not socially acceptable for her to go out without a companion and when David was in school and was free in the afternoons I'm sure they went out to parks or to Coney but now that he's working she doesn't have anyone to take her out so she's crammed in the house with her mother sewing all day. She's a eastern European Jew with socialist ideas, no one's gonna want to be seen with her. Even her boyfriend works all the time so she doesn't even get to go out with him. Poor Sarah's just lonely and willing to date the first boy her brother brings home that doesn't think she's unladylike and vulgar with any regard to if they're compatible.

The fact that Andrew Keenan Bolger played Tiny Tim as a kid cracks me up. What do you mean every Broadway director sees this guy and goes, "how'd you like to be Victorian era kid with a paralyzed leg and a silly demenor?" And this man says yes every time!

Ignoring Sarah and Jack as a ship and skipping straight to Javid is nice, but imagining David just standing back watching his sister get the guy he's been pining for and feeling like he can't do anything because he doesn't want to risk his relationships is also neat.

okay. so. some wild lore for Oscar Delancey
The character I play in Newsies is a true character. His name is Oscar Delancey. [The younger of the two Delancey brothers.] The Delancey Streets in New York and San Francisco were named after him. When he grew up he became a huge crime lord. But, in Newsies, he's this bad, more perverted, demented younger brother. My character's the guy you love to hate. - Shon Greenblatt, Newsies interview with Teen Beat

so, listen. the moment right before "king of new york" where spot is leaning over jack going "hey where's my name where my name" as they're looking through the paper causes me to descend into a downward spiral every single time.
because everything we know about spot conlon before we meet him is that he's scary. he's a brute. he's the king. none of the other borroughs will do shit until they hear spot's on board. and the brooklyn newsboys are a rough bunch when we meet them. they're intimidating and goonish and they all take their orders from spot conlon.
but he's just a BOY. he may be the king of brooklyn. he may have an attitude and an ego bigger than his own size. but he's just a BOY who is so excited to see his picture in the paper and it's a reality check for the audience because they're all just boys.
they all have dreams and their dreams aren't even that big. "a porcelain tub with boiling water" THAT'S what spot wants. that's his line in "king of new york" -- it's such a simple wish and such a small comfort that he does not have despite being dubbed "the king of brooklyn" and all the power and respect that comes with it.
like it turns my brain inside out because you have to think what a life this kid must be living -- what life this kid must have lived before being a newsie -- that he's yearning off into the distance dreaming about taking a bath in a tub of hot water. that he's so excited to see his name and his photo in the paper that he's near-giddy looking for it over jack's shoulder.
i'm so fascinated with him i want to peer into his brain let me put him in under a microscope let me peek into his skull tell me your whole life story spot i'm ready and listening.
