The human brain has been sculpted over the course of millions of years of evolution, so you’d think it’s been debugged pretty well.
But it’s still left with so many mental glitches.
Just take a look at this terrifying atlas of all the mental traps that plague our everyday thinking. (Click here for an enlarged version.)
Buster Benson, a product manager at Slack, used the massive information provided by thousands of Wikipedians over the years to make an easy-to-navigate list of cognitive biases. His post on Medium got a lot of attention from readers, one of whom was John Manoogian, an internet entrepreneur and engineer. Manoogian, amazed by the amount of information that was there, decided to turn the list into a visual map.
“You look at this overwhelming array of cognitive biases and distortions, and realize how there are so many things that come between us and objective reality,” Manoogian told The Huffington Post. “One of the most overwhelming things to me that came out of this project is humility.”
Manoogian has set up a print-on-demand system where people can order a poster version of the atlas. Since its creation two weeks ago, the response has been great, he said.

Gifts with words and Tought
8 awesome psychology tricks
Tumblr media
If you want your kids to eat broccoli, ask them if they want 2 broccoli stalks or 5, instead of just asking them if they want broccoli. This way you’ve already made the choice for them, but they’ll feel like they’re getting a great deal by choosing the amount of broccoli they want. You can expand this trick to other situations, too.
To have a little fun with words, when having a conversation with someone, pick a word they say and then each time they say the word, or words close to it, smile, nod or give some type of positive affirmation, and watch them say the word all the time.
Do you have a song stuck in your head that you’d like to forget? Think of the end of the song. According to the Zeignark effect, your mind tends to think of things left unfinished, so thinking of the end of the song will close the loop and allow you to get the song out of your head.
To know if someone is interested in a conversation look at their feet, if they are pointing towards you, they are. If they are pointing sideways or any other direction, they aren’t.
Ever get the feeling that someone is watching you, but you’re not sure? Try yawning and then glancing at your suspected stalker. If they yawn, then you know they’ve been watching you, since yawning is contagious.
If you want people to take you seriously, tell them what you say is what your father taught you. People tend to believe fatherly advice inherently.
Crack a joke and observe the people who are laughing around you. People who feel close to each other will be looking at each other. This is useful for discerning out friendships and other relationships.
In crowded areas, look in the direction in which you intend to go and watch the walkway just open up. In busy areas and crowded streets, people tend to watch other people’s eyes to see which direction they will go so they can go the opposite way.

A NASA engineer decoded it. It reads  “NEE NED ZB 6TNN DEIBEDH SIEFI EBEE SSIEI ESEE SEEE.”.  This was entered into the universal translator and the message was:
“For a good time call Siefi Ebee at ZBT-6TNN. You won’t be disappointed.”

#SelfObservation
Self Observation
Tumblr media
by  Saṃsāran
Self Observation is the simple technique of observing one’s thoughts and how they interplay with emotion.
This is important because most people go through life never truly understanding how thought affects emotion. They simply think and feel even with they do not want to think and feel about a particular subject. In fact, most people are unaware that we even have the capability to do this. When we learn to observe our thoughts we come to the realization that there is a distinction between “I” and the inner talking. One cannot observe one. It takes two, an observed and an observer.
Then an amazing thing happens. When we start to self observe we gain control. You will observe a strange phenomena. This ball of negative emotion does not want to be observed. Somehow it has an awareness that to be observed is to be controlled. The simple fact of observing a thought and the emotion which follows gives us this ability. It starts slowly at first but then the more we do it the better at it we become.
This is how we do it:
Step out of your mind as if you were a completely dispassionate and objective observer. Listen to the thoughts and watch how they change the feeling. Visualize the sadness as a pulsating ball of feeling located about four fingers above your navel. Focus on it. Feel it change.
Now for the final part. Breathing. A very special, ancient kind of breathing. Sitting, back straight breath deeply through your nose and visualize the breath as it encounters the ball of sadness. Hold the breath for a few seconds and while you pull your abdomen inward and upward then release the breath slowly. Without your doing anything at all you will feel a lessening of the sorrow. Stay focused on the ball and use the breathing to dissipate it.
Experiment with this. Learn to use this technique to focus on your body. Learn to observe your body carefully and, most of all, mindfully. Listen when it is hungry, observe how your body reacts to hunger. Listen when it is fatigued. Listen when it is aroused. Listen to the body when you are angry. Feel the heart rate jump. note the effect on breathing. Pay attention to all of the sensations it offers you. See how mood changes with these factors.
Self observation offers immediate results and control comes fairly effortlessly once the observation starts.

#BBC #Science #PenguinProjectHelp
Guys, this is not a drill. Antarctic scientists need you to study photos of penguins to help them figure out how climate change is affecting these stumpy little flightless birds.
Scientists from the UK have installed a series of 75 cameras near penguin territories in Antarctica and its surrounding islands to figure out what’s happening with local populations. But with each of those cameras taking hourly photos, they simply can’t get through all the adorable images without your help.
“We can’t do this work on our own,” lead researcher Tom Hart from the University of Oxford told the BBC, “and every penguin that people click on and count on the website - that’s all information that tells us what’s happening at each nest, and what’s happening over time.”
The citizen science project is pretty simple - known as PenguinWatch 2.0, all you need to do is log on, look at photos, and identify adult penguins, chicks, and eggs in each image. Each photo requires just a few clicks to identify, and you can chat about your results in the website’s ‘Discuss’ page with other volunteers.
