Justification & Evaluation
I was very present and vocal in the early stages of production and made many mood-boards and plans from the off to make sure that I would be able to pull this thing off, 2 Locations, 10 sets, 7 Actors and 22 crew meant that I’d have to have my head screwed on. I spent most of my time in pre-production buying, sourcing or making props and costume bits and location scouting.
Costume
When it came to costume, I wanted to give each of the characters distinct colour themes. I wanted Arthur to represent the Welsh landscape he inhabits, so I dressed him in earthy tones; browns, greens and blues. Lily, on the other hand, I wanted to appear in stark contrast to her environment in bright, warm colours to reflect her bubbly personality. Emma, I wanted to feel like a mash-up of her parents. When we first see her she is wearing a pale yellow cardigan to mirror the yellow raincoat that Lily wears later and also her shirt and cardigan combination. Later, I wanted her to more represent her father, matching his casual wear in pales of blue, now that their relationship has reached a point of closure. I purposefully dressed the younger versions of the parents in brighter colours to represent the technicolor love story that Arthur misses so much. His life is drained of colour without Lily. Mark represented a block in Arthur and Emma’s relationship, so by putting him in quite corporate smart-wear, it reveals his contrast to the James family and further highlights how uneasy and messy he makes Arthur feel. Jessica, the solicitor, had to represent danger in some form, she has come in and threatened Arthur’s equilibrium, so I thought it was suitable that she wear red.
Set
Each of the set presented a different problem to face but the main problem across all sets was time. I had very limited time to get onto set before actors and in-between scene changes to dress the set accordingly for the next scene. Having an assistant helped me a great deal as it meant I could be in 2 places at once but I still wish I had had more time to prepare for each shot and to be on set during the shoot to keep an eye on continuity etc, as some mistakes did sneak through.
I learnt a lot of new techniques on this film such as dirtying down, how to use fake dust (Fuller’s Earth) and time management.
I wanted to create a warmth throughout the house that would appear when Lily appears, leaving Arthur behind in the cold once she had gone. However, due to last minute changes on the day, I wasn’t able to fully showcase what I had wanted to from my set plans and I’m not sure this came across.
In conclusion, I am happy with the work I produced for this film, but would I do it again? No way.
