I don’t know who needs to hear this but

Do NOT cast spells for positive effects that involve:

Burning a picture of yourself*

Burning a piece of paper that anywhere contains your name*

Burning a piece of hair or other taglock*

*Unless you really know what you’re doing

I don’t know how sigil culture got people to think that burning anything = sending it off for spirits, but NO. Across pretty much every magical practice, burning involving a person = destruction. Burning as a means of generically sending things off is mainly used for offerings.

On a similar vein, do not cast spells for positive effects that involve taking a human figure and ripping up, burning, submerging in soil or water, or doing anything else to that figure that would maim or kill a real human. (unless you really know what you’re doing)

Remember the Law of Similarity. Destruction of an image = destruction of the thing itself.

Edit: I’ve seen a lot of comments of “fire isn’t just destructive!” and “burning can have other effects!” and yes, I completely agree. Hell, I can hardly do magic without a lit candle in the room. I’m talking specifically about harming images or pieces of yourself/your clients who you want to produce positive effects for.

I also made the caveat that if you know what you’re doing then there isn’t an issue. imo, “real magic” is any magic that works. If you have a technique that works for you and doesn’t cause unwanted side effects, great! My intention behind this post was to speak to those who are trying spells from online, modern spellbooks, their friends, etc. My goal is to encourage a critical eye, especially when techniques that have historically been used one way are being applied in another very different one. 

Regardless, I’m glad this post is generating a lot of good conversation.

good afternoon. what are methods you personally find most effective when it comes to constructing+activating sigils? what are the ones you think are total bullshit? i ask that because there are several ~sigil blogs~ on tumblr and huh.... let's just say they stand in direct contradiction of common sense/chaos magick books.

Theres a lot of bullshit out there. In general - just understand the underlying metaphysics of how sigils work, I.E. gnosis. If a method doesnt have any apparent way to reach gnosis, its likely bullshit. (For example, things like drawing the sigil on your body, eating sigils, putting a crystal on them, and other nonsensical new age nonsense.)

Methods that have worked best for me in the past have been gnosis via indifferent vacuity, breathing exercises, meditation, or orgasm.

I'll be completely honest though I haven't had to use a sigil in months. Since getting more into grim trad and classical magick, I've had a lot more outlets for getting shit done that are more fun and more mentally stimulating than just sigil magick, so I've kind of moved away from it. Sigils are still a great supplementary operation, but these days they're rarely the main focus of my work.

FJÓLDÖYSTAVE will cause someone to slowly curse themselves as they spread lies.

The curse of the Fjóldöystave will cause the target to experience an increasing sense of “being dead inside”, growing in intensity every time a lie or false rumour is spread by the person.

The staves themselves are to be painted onto a piece of parchment or paper with ink mixed from charcoal and spit. The parchment is then folded up and wrapped in black cloth. Once this is done, the staves are to be hidden inside, or if not possible; simply near the home of your target.

The purpose of this is not to stop the lies from being spread, but rather cause the target to start even more lies and rumours. As this escalates, the lies will also become gradually more and more incredible, to the point where others will start to realise the obvious falseness and cause the web of lies to collapse in on itself, taking the target’s ego and all credibility with it.

Do you think that the majority of “pop culture paganism gods” are malicious entities fucking with gullible fangirls/boys? Typically, I think they’re just bullshitting themselves or lost in fantasy — but occasionally, it seems as if they are downright being fucked over by something pretending to be whatever anime demi-goddess they pray to.

I think most is maladaptive daydreaming but some people are definitely getting taken for a ride by opportunistic spirits who see an easy meal
