It was almost over.
The gang had nearly pinpointed the location of Deucalion and his lieutenant who had been stalking Bev for a while now. Ace felt peace that he hadn’t held in such a long time. It was almost over and soon he’d be able to take his family out of the city for good. He’d be able to see Abigail more. He’d be able to have her spend crucial time with her stepmother and brother. She’d be able to be a bigger part of her unborn sibling’s life. This is what he wanted.
Warren sat beside Ace—a large map of the city laid before them on the table. Warren was tapering off crosses across the canva. It seemed random but each point had a purpose as they narrowed their area of pursuit.
Ace wanted to go out with a bang, so to speak. He didn’t just want to be the reason Deucalion and Santiago went to prison. He wanted to bring their entire organization down.
“We’re getting there, bro,” Warren said with a smile as he looked at Ace. Warren looked down, the buzzing of his phone seemed to startle him. He suddenly looked puzzled. “Why is he calling me?”
Warren pulled the phone up to his ear, ready to speak, but before he could, the voice on the other end spoke in a hushed voice.
“Don’t let him know it’s me. Go somewhere privately.”
“Hey, were you trying to call Audrey?” Warren said with a laugh, trying to play off the confusion he had before answering the call. He mouthed “one moment” to Ace as he got up from the chair and walked out of the room, holding his composure as he went.
Out in the hall, he went until he found a closet room, and closed the door behind him in the small space. “Eli?” he finally said the caller’s name, his heart racing in his throat. “What is going on?”
“Locke Studios was attacked. Dallas was shot multiple times. I don’t know if he’ll make it. The ambulance is on the way now… but Warren, Bev is hurt real bad too. I need you to calmly tell Ace and get him over there…NOW.”
Warren didn’t even realize he was walking back to the office as Eli spoke. By the time Eli was shouting “now,” Warren was already in the room, staring Ace in the face. Ace was trying to read his expression.
“What’s wrong?” Ace said calmly, but there was fear creasing in eyes. He walked to Warren as he ended the call.
“It’s… it’s Bev,” Warren said, trying to find the right words to explain the situation.
It didn’t matter.  There was no calm manner to say this. There were no right words.
Ace was out of the office in a heartbeat. The middle Donovan sibling was the fastest. And today that was his advantage. He ran from the building and down the street, his feet barely touching the pavement. It was only three blocks from Locke Studios. He chose this space for that very reason. Faster and faster he went, pushing his body to run its limit so he could get to his wife.
The thoughts flooding his mind were cruel. Echoes of the nightmares he had been having for months. His heart was racing, beating so loudly in his throat and ears. He could barely hear the desperate screams of his lungs. And then he heard it, the sound of the siren. Faster he went, the shop in sight now.
The nightmare was bleeding through reality now. He got to the front door and pushed it open. Briggs and Deno were there, Deno holding his hands over the wounds on Dallas while Briggs stayed by Bev.
“Baby?” Ace cried with alarm, falling beside her and pulling her into his arms. She was unconscious. “Baby, baby? Wake up. You gotta wake up for me.”  With a trembling hand, he brushed her bloody hair out of her face.
The doors flung open and then EMS was rushing towards them. Selfishly, Ace wanted her saved first. Dallas had been shot twice, but Bev? Bev was his everything. “She’s pregnant,” Ace said, catching the attention of them as they tried to evaluate where to begin. They stopped at Bev to assess her injuries. Just then another team of EMS came rushing to Dallas.
Ace knew then that prison was too kind for Deucalion and Santiago. They deserved death.

Nobody's gonna slow me down.
The sound of a timer trilling interrupted Ace and MJ’s karaoke. “I’m coming, I’m coming,” he mumbled to himself, putting MJ securely in his highchair as Ace danced his way to the stove, singing as he went, “I’m on the highway to hell, dun dun dun, highway to hell, oh yeahh, ba-da-dun-dun,” he sang his own version. He pulled the garlic bread out and sat it aside to cool some.
He turned around to face his wife, his happy smile quickly faded and he was by her side in a moment. Realizing she needed to divulge something to him, he went ahead and gave MJ his pasta that had cooled enough for him. Then, Ace ushered Bev over to the other side of the kitchen to privately speak.
Ace held his trembling wife in a tight hug, soothing her and trying to console her. “I will take care of this,” he assured her. And he knew that she believed him. He kissed her tenderly on the mouth, wiping away her tears. He glanced over at MJ and then Bev, letting his hand caress her lower abdomen. “No one will hurt our family.” His vow held truth that was unquestionable. “Go sit with MJ,” he whispered. Pulling his phone out of his pocket, Ace stepped outside to make a call.
Only a few rings were needed before Eli’s voice came through the speaker. “What’s up, boss?”
“Santiago was at Bev’s salon,” he said, his usual playful tone much more severe. “I want him found. Now. I don’t care how you do it, find him. Send a couple of boys to stake out Locke Studios. I want someone there around the clock, you hear?”
“You got it,” Eli said and ended the call.
Ace was already pulling up a new call, the phone rang and then Warren Cold answered, “Hey bro.”
“Can you come to LA? I need your help.”

Time for change.
Spring was in the air. There was a surge of excitement that fanned through the billowing trees and the flowers that began to bloom. It was the time to make new goals for the future. Ace and Bev had already been in discussion about their future. They always seemed to be in unison when it came to talks of their lives and what they wanted or anticipated for them. MJ and Abby were at the center of all their goals.
Ace pulled his old truck into the garage building, the sun that shone through the windshield turned to darkness as he steered the curve of the ramp in the building. He went up two ramps to the third level of the parking structure before parking in his usual spot and looked through the rearview mirror. This level was vacant of other vehicles today, it felt a little strange to Ace. After all, it was half past two. It should be packed with vehicles. Ace stayed in the truck for a few minutes, watching the shadows of the parking spaces; the dull fluorescent lights looked like they were on their last fuse. He saw no signs of life in the area and this encouraged him to crawl out of the truck's cab.
He pushed down the locking mechanism on the door as he slid out and then shut the door. He pocketed his keys and phone, always wanting to keep his eyes on his surroundings when out in public. He walked across the garage park and through a metal door; the hum of fluorescent lights going in and out could be heard between the echoes of his footsteps as he descended two flights of stairs.
After walking across the plaza, Ace slid inside an office building, the glass door read: Simmons Powerwash. He walked past the receptionist that greeted him politely and headed into the manager’s office.
“Hey,” Eli said, glancing up from the computer monitor. “I didn’t realize you were stopping by today.”
Ace closed the door behind him and joined Eli behind the desk, glancing over the security footage that Eli was combing through. It had been over eight months and Ace refused to accept the fact that Santiago just disappeared. He was out there, somewhere. Waiting for his chance. Ace wouldn’t give him another chance though. Once was enough. He came too close to taking Bev from him. He wouldn’t let it happen again.
Ace’s icy blue eyes searched the screen of faces, looking for any sign of Santiago. “He’s out there somewhere,” Ace whispered, sitting down beside Eli. “I want this over with.”
Eli sighed. “Yeah, I know you do, man. I know.”
“I want out,” Ace said, glancing at Eli’s face now to see how he would react to it. "I want to take my family and get out of this city."
Eli stared at Ace in silence for a few moments before finally nodding his head, he looked back at the screen and said, “Well, we better find this son of a bitch.”
