This is a thing that was a little hard to explain without showing a video example, and it's hard to explain in general, but there's something astonishingly brilliant with how Takuya Eguchi, Twilight's voice actor, uses different timbres of his voice for the character, depending on what mask he's wearing - and the selectively few times he might not have been wearing a mask.
I love this scene for many reasons, and one of them is how they handled the usage of the character's voice. As Twilight, his voice is a little more sharp, and in a low register (sounds deeper). As Loid, it's a little softer, and in a high register (sounds higher) - which he may use purposefully to make himself seem friendlier; think about how you may raise the pitch of your voice whenever you meet someone new, and then slowly drop it to your usual pitch when you get a little more comfortable with them.
And then, in this scene, there's a third voice he uses, and in front of Yor too. It's soft, like Loid's, but also in a slightly lower register that's closer to Twilight's. If you notice, when he speaks to Yor so openly, it's that soft and low voice. When he has his internal monologue, it switches to a sharper timbre. He says "You're strong, Yor" in that third voice, and then turns to his usual higher-pitched voice when he continues, as he's now stopped being so vulnerable and swapped the attention back to Yor.
I'm going to hazard a guess that this may be his real voice, the voice of the man behind it all. We know "Twilight" and "Loid" are masks, regardless of what he thinks of them, so it makes sense that the voices he uses to present those masks with would be used and chosen consciously, and thus sounding different than the voice he'd use if he could be open, honest and vulnerable.

Some Theories about Anya's Name
Who would have thought a short chapter would bring so much information and discussion? But then again, we're talking about Anya, agent of chaos (according to her papa).
Tumblr media
After that chapter, there's plenty of theories flying around, so I decided to make this post to compile, explain and expand these theories 😉
Ready?
Anya is an acronym: This one is pretty clear has been a popular general theory. It means that the letters of her name stand for something else. What exactly? We don't know yet, but it probably has to do with Project Apple and the infamous lab Anya was created.
Anya...Ania...OstANIA: If you live near small children, you probably know that when they are learning how to talk, they do it by picking up words adults say and many times they say those words wrong. While discussing with some friends, I imagined those scientists constantly saying the word Ostania in front of that little girl. Maybe baby Anya thought that was her name because she heard the word OstANIA all the time, but she couldn't say it right.
Anya, the foreign princess: This one is very simple. It means that her name was spelled differently in her country of origin. This theory is vague, but I do believe a third country could be involved in all this mess. Also, it would make sense for Anya to be hiding in Ostania, if she was born and kept captive in a different country.
Anya...A N/A: This one is one of the most interesting theories! A N/A would mean something like "Non-applicable". You probably think this doesn't say much, but it really does. In the first few chapters of the story we learned that Anya was adopted and returned 4 times. Instead of a child, she was returned as if she was a piece of clothing. Even though it's been barely mentioned, we've also learned that people that participated in Project Apple didn't treat the subjects nicely (see how they treated Bond). Those people called Anya "subject 007". They didn't even give her a name. If we think about it, Anya is very "non-applicable". She was created in a lab, she has a strange power, so she's not like the other kids, she's been adopted and returned 4 times...
The A N/A and Anya being treated like an object instead of a human being fits the Spy x Family premise of the story, which is: Humans like Twilight, Yor, and Anya are used as weapons instead of being treated like humans. The story is about them regaining their humanity through love and family.
So even if A N/A says nothing about Anya, it says a lot about the story.
Tumblr media
Look at this little girl. This illustration was heartbreaking. Do you know when it takes place? It's right before he meets Twilight. We see that it's the same filthy orphanage Twilight visited on chapter 1 and this is not Anya's first orphanage, so that means this illustration happened after she was returned again. The way she's facing the door, her body language, the way she holds Mr. Chimera by the hand is so sad. Here she is, once again, in a place she doesn't want to be, where nobody will take care of her...alone 😭
Enough of that or we'll end up crying...🤧
Some other things to take into consideration about her name:
Mr. Chimera: Since this is a visual story, that panel of Mr. Chimera tells us that this plushie is involved in Anya's name. If you've read certain fic, you know where I stand on that. In this case, I think that yes, the person who helped Anya escape gave Mr. Chimera to her. However, I don't think it was exactly that character (you know who). It probably was someone else, maybe even a new character we don't know yet. It could also be a scientist who took pity on Anya or disagreed with the use of children as lab rats, and helped her escape. We don't know yet.
Twilight: One of the most beautiful panels on that short chapter was seeing Anya's eyes lit up when her papa told her the correct spelling of her name. Did you see it? Those were the eyes of someone who had just learned something new about herself and by doing this, Twilight made her even more human.
Tumblr media
One more thing...I've seen speculations about the next arc of the manga being about Anya's past because of this short mission. In my opinion...I don't think it'll happen yet. Why? If it was the case, this would have been a longer chapter and the actual beginning of the arc.
I believe Anya's past will be one of the last things we learn, because there's plenty of things to resolve and a lot of information we don't have. Stories are like puzzles; this chapter was an important piece, but we're not working on that part yet.

Loid : *just woke up groggily in the hospital after a mission.*
Loid : Anya...? Where... Where is Yor?
Anya : Who do you think gave you that heart, Papa?
Loid :
Loid : *realises and tears up* No...
Anya : LOL joking. Mama is in the bathroom.

No but I'm going feral about this. It was that moment that made Yor believe she's found someone who will understand her and accept her. An equal, who doesn't owe his survival to her, and who can see her face-to-face and be honest and impartial on his view about her. Yor was searching for someone to acknowledge her, for someone to understand her struggle, and she has no idea how much he really understands.
She now believes that Loid would not begrudge her, if he knew the reason why she's done all she's done. And she doesn't yet know that he would not just understand, but he'd fully sympathize with her, because it's what he has been doing all along. Sacrificing himself, his happiness and his future, dirtying his hands so that someone else could live in peace. And that all along, he's never received the acknowledgement he may have craved for.
And so she'll get to see that she can provide for him what he's been providing for her all along. A hand, just as rough and blood-stained as his, but a hand nonetheless to help each other walk through a sea of pain, judgment and prejudice.
(Anime only fan here, don't spoil me for the manga)

What I realized in watching ep. 34 is that even tho the feelings that Loid and Yor have for each other are real and they have an unspoken promise to each other to build a nice home for Anya, the reality of their "fake marriage" is that they still have to mend their wounds privately alone in order to hide their real identities from each other. They can't treat each other's wounds as an act of love.
The irony is that if either one of them finds out how hurt they’ve been, they’ll go berserk. And we’ve seen them get angry at people just for insulting and suggesting they’ll get hurt.

caught up on the latest chapter of Spy x Family and I love how every character is living in a different genre. Loid's living in an action drama, Yor's trying to live in a slice of life, Anya's in a cool shounen, Becky's living in a romance drama, Damian's living in...a shoujo of all things
none of them realize they're in a comedy drama

SxF Spoiler Chapter 90
Honestly, one of the funniest thing for me in this chapter was, Anya being the translator or interpreter (or whatever) of Mr. Sigmund (the old man) 😆
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And there's Yor, being so done with them😭🤣
Tumblr media
And one thing was, the way Yor grabbed the Old Man's shirt... will never not be funny to me🤣
Tumblr media
I know everyone got a little disappointed with the recent chapter as some of us kinda expected that it'll be a chapter introducing a new arc, (although the latter arc just ended last chapter I guess) but hey! It's still a sweet and fun chapter for me, regardless. But I'm really hoping though, that Endo-sensei is cooking something^_^

My thoughts on Spy x Family: EYES ONLY Guidebook (English ver) - part 2
Continuing from my previous post about the English version of the SxF manga guidebook "EYES ONLY," today I'll be going over Endo's interviews, as well as showing my favorite "fun" page spreads!
Endo's interviews with his editor Lin and other manga-ka
First off, let's address the elephant in the room: as some of you may have heard, a horrendous clickbait article was released a while back citing an interview from this book (when it was only in Japanese). The article claims that Endo states in the interview that he doesn't like Anya or any of the other SxF characters. Thankfully u/fuyukochii on Reddit had provided an unofficial translation of the interview, so most fans were able to see that this article was bogus. And now we have the official translation as further proof...
Tumblr media
Lin, Kato, and Amu are teasing Endo about the fact that he tends to not draw handsome men ("ikemen") in his series. So when he finally did with Loid's design, they joking applaud this big sacrifice he made, to which Endo replies (again, jokingly) that this compromise to his preferred style is why he has no emotional attachment to his characters. Again, all the "laugh" and "clap" interjections in this exchange make it clear that they're all joking around. The article took this statement of his completely out of context and twisted the "no attachment" wording to mean total dislike. It's unfortunate, but false information gets published like this all the time, and often for more dire issues than a manga fanbook. But it seems like a lot of fans didn't fall for the clickbait, which is good. And now everyone who reads the book officially in English can see that there's no way someone like Endo who has such dedication to his craft could downright dislike it.
Moving on, I totally agree with Nishimori, Kato, and Amu's praise for Endo's work in the below exchanges…
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The trait SxF has that they convey here is "balance:" balance between making its world believable, with enough serious conflict so that we care about what's at stake, but at the same time, stretching the veil of realism a bit to have comedic moments. There's also great balance to the characters in that none of them are totally good or totally bad, but because we know what's going on in their world and why they do the things they do (like what Nishimori mentioned about the scene with Loid), we can still sympathize with them.
Going along with that thought, Endo's responses on the below page further illustrates his balance between "dark" and "comedic."
Tumblr media
I like how he says that he's not interested in grotesque violence as much as dark themes of the psychological kind…the dark side of humanity more than visual depictions of violence. We can see this in how he portrays the serious moments in SxF where, instead of showing actual horrific scenes of war, the focus is instead on the psychological impacts that war has had on the characters. Likewise, he mentions how perhaps "the comedic nature of their (the characters') daily lives is rooted in the severity of their reality." It's said that within comedy there's often some form of tragedy, and I think SxF is a good example of this as so much of the comedy has its roots in the darker aspects of life, like the fact that the characters have to lie about their true identities. But at the same time, Endo mentions that he doesn't want to shy away from the sad reality of war, which was a big driver for why he made the cruise arc. And again, his intention was not to show any kind of "good vs evil" thing, but simply what motivates people to do extreme things in times of war. His quote about how he never intended to show the Forgers as a completely righteous family is something I knew about before and I think is very poignant. It harkens back to what I discussed before about balance and the fact that his characters aren't shown as completely good or completely bad.
On a related note, in the below comment, Endo acknowledges that Loid and Yor have "darker sides."
Tumblr media
It's cool that he likes drawing those expressions. It seems like he makes a conscious decision to show their "darkness" at the right times.
It's also very interesting that so many elements of SxF were decided last minute, as mentioned on the below page.
Tumblr media
I can't believe Anya being telepathic was decided on so late! Considering it's such a big player in the series' humor, that's very surprising. But Endo does admit on this same page that he hadn't planned out the story at all. Since he had only done short/one-shot series up to that point, I'm sure he wasn't expecting SxF to continue on that long. But once it became so popular, he had to keep fleshing out the story and characters, probably beyond what he originally thought. But considering how little he had come up with for the series initially, he's done a fantastic job keeping up its quality and continuity. It really was some crazy mix of timing, talent, and perhaps a bit of luck, that turned a series with no long-term planning and so many last minute decisions into such a hit.
Other parts of the interview highlight just how dedicated Endo is to his research and how he agonizes over the fact that he may have been inconsistent with something.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I also have to say that as I read through all of Endo's interviews and comments in this book, I admire how down-to-earth he is. Like, rather than sugarcoat things, he just says it like it is, for example, he said he doesn't reveal new character names that often because it's a hassle to come up with them (pg179), how he didn't give any thought to Anya's pink hair besides it being "cute" (pg181), how it's a lot of work to draw characters in a variety of clothes (pg178), and how the main emotion he feels with SxF getting an anime series is "tired" (pg174). But there's often a "laugh" interjection in many of these interview answers, so we know his comments aren't to be taken that seriously!
And here's his message to readers at the end of the interview. Definitely not the words of a man who dislikes his story and characters.
Tumblr media
My favorite "fun" pages of the book
Since the Endo interviews were pretty heavy, I'll finish up this post with the lighter topic of highlighting my favorite funny page spreads in the book!
First off is a spread featuring all of Yor's cooking!
Tumblr media
The sarcasm for these meal descriptions is hilarious, lol. And what was that dessert Yor made at the end of the cooking lesson chapter? Guess we'll never know.
The next spread from Anya's POV about her made-up spy group "P2" is absolutely adorable.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I love how they included all her mispronunciations of words. Also her calling Fiona "Agent Mean Lady," lmao!
And lastly, Yuri's collection of Yor photos (made with Anya's help!)
Tumblr media
This is all just 4th-wall breaking fun as obviously no one was taking photos at these moments in canon, so Endo could just roll with the joke. Anya's inclusion in this whole gag is too good, from Yuri calling her an "unnamed collaborator" to her "Paparotsies, eat your heart out!" And I absolutely love her comment at the end about how she can't show Yuri some of Yor's less attractive expressions, lol. Pure SxF comedy gold.
I'll have one more post of EYES ONLY content coming soon, so stay tuned!
