Manioc Festival (2015) - Bepunu from Glenn Shepard on Vimeo.

This hypnotically beautiful film of the 3-day long manioc festival by Bepunu shows especially creative editing to reduce the running time for impatient kuben ('white') audiences. The original Kayapo-style film ran for half an hour, but Bepunu employed video stills and "slide show" transition throughout the film to make visual reference to important ritual moments in their proper order without cutting them out entirely. These editing choices are a perfect example of the "Kayapo film-making aesthetic" that anthropologist Terrence Turner described in the 1990s, and that continues through the present. This was a little test us Layzell Bros did for a music video, we thought we could work as a playable game that featured the song. We liked the idea of different gangs going around tagging spots but rival gangs tags would have enemies pop out of them that you'd have to fight, kind of Pokemon style. Maybe a bit too ambitious for a low budget music video and it didn't go ahead but we still like the test. Anyone wanna make a video game?

this little fella was supposed to be a evening speedy. In the end it took me 2 Sessions after work, which is still alright I guess. Textured in Substance Painter and rendered in Marmoset Toolbag 3. Both are excellent tools, providing the artist with a lot of freedom yet deliver fast and dynamic results.
