Okay okay, I have another fic writing decision to make. I decided the next fic to work on will be the one about how Gustave lost his arm and has a real bad time about it, but ultimately makes it through because he’s got people who love and care for him.

The question is: do I involve Maelle in this fic? Canon gives us basically nothing about when or how he lost his arm, and while I initially imagined it happening pre-Maelle, it could certainly have happened after she came into his life.

So on one hand, I love Maelle, love her relationship with Gustave, and love writing about them together. On the other hand, do I really want to subject this already very traumatized child to having to watch her first stable and loving caretaker in this world since her bio parents (who she wasn’t old enough to remember) go through one of the worst times of his life? On the other other hand, having someone you’re responsible for to inspire you to keep carrying on for their sake, that can be a powerful motivator.
