ALTHOUGH he was sure Derek’s laugh was well-intended, it still felt like some sort of personal attack, leaving him grimacing. “Just help me,” he muttered, a hand on his injured shoulder as though pressure would help ease the pain. (It should be noted that it only made it worse.) The hand on his side led him to shudder, and he dropped his arm, averting his gaze while the werewolf pulled the shirt off of him. Despite what he took, it still hurt to an extent, and his arm felt numb when the fabric was finally off of him.
“Thanks.” His expression of gratitude was curt but genuine - he just didnt have the energy to say more along those lines. “You know what’s one of the things I hate most? Hospitals.” Clearly, his effort was more set on complaints. “You know what’s almost as bad as hospitals?Antiseptic.” The list of things Stiles hated nowadays was long, not to mention increasing by the second, but those two things he’d mentioned sat at the very top of his list.
Despite his words, he made no attempt to avoid what seemed to be his fate, instead turning to glance towards his bed. “Do whatever, but I’m sitting down for this.” No need to be standingwhile someone wiped his wound with liquid fire. “It doesn’t need stitches, does it? You’re not allowed to stick needles in my skin - now or ever. We’ll never be good enough friends for that.” Hell, he wouldn’t have let Scott do that, back when they’d still been as close as ever.
Tumblr media
MUTTERING was something Derek didn’t remember Stiles being capable of, and it certainly wiped any glimpse of smile from the werewolf’s face as he helped the boy out of his shirt entanglement. Dealing with this side of Stiles was new to him and honestly the young Hale was still trying to figure out the best way to do it.
He nodded to the word of gratitude and watched silently as the other complained about hospitals and antiseptics. Derek wasn’t a fan of hospitals himself, since they only remembered him of the days after his family died and he and Laura made Peter daily company until his sister decided they should leave to New York. Antiseptic was less of an issue; It’s not like he ever needed it for himself. “Noted. Consider yourself luck you will only need one of them now.”
What mattered now was the boy actually obliged to have his wound taken care of, even if he did so whilst complaining all the way. Derek still counted as a win. “You could be lying down for all I care, Stiles.” He said casually, following the boy to the bed once he got the kit. “I just want to be sure this bite doesn’t become a bigger problem for you later.” It seemed like the boy had enough problems already. “It doesn’t need.” Which was all he said on the matter, because he wasn’t sure Stiles would react well if the werewolf said that if the boy’s life depended on Derek sewing him up, he would do it with or without permission.
As soon as he had the antiseptic ready on clean cotton, he placed one hand near the bite, back to taking Stiles’ pain away. “Now relax. This will hurt me more than you.” And it did. The moment his other hand started cleaning the wound he felt the burning pain add up to the natural sorrow that came from the injure. It sucked, but he would rather have that then let Stiles feel the pain by himself. He had been where Stiles is. He was sure the boy felt like he deserved that pain.
And Derek taking it away whenever they touched was his silent way to say that no, he didn’t deserve.

text: Isaac
Isaac: Yes Derek I have been for a week now.
Isaac: I know I was stuck in the school for 2 days.
Derek: Wait.
Derek: That explains why your scent was so strong there...
Derek: Are you staying at Scott's?
Derek: Now is really not a good time to be here, Isaac.
Derek: It's not safe

“Perfect” she grinned, looking back at him with excited eyes. “What? Is there something on my face?”
HE smiled and walked towards an outside table, biting back a smile when she asked if there was anything on her face. “Yes, there is.” These happy eyes, this stupidly adorable smile... Ugh. He really needed to stop thinking about this. “But nothing wrong.”

“LISTEN, we’re not being twelve year olds. I told you what happened with Donovan, and I told him, but he wasn’t quite as understanding as you were. Scott’s never . . done that, I guess.” Stiles let out a heavy sigh, palm of his hand against his face for a moment in exasperation. If only Scott would listen to him, all of these problems would go away. “Fine, I’ll– yeah. I’ll find Lydia, and if she wants to go to Scott, then I’ll go. Be happy with that; it’s the best you’re getting from me.”
Tumblr media
“Yeah, alright– Please. Just tell me she’s alright . . I’ll let you go, I guess, so you don’t have to stay on the phone while trying to find her. Distracting, right? Yeah. I’ll see you when we . . get out,  or whatever.” Without giving Derek a chance to protest, he hung up, then let out a shaky sigh. He’d be fine, sooner or later.
“STILES...” Derek took a deep breath. Beacon Hills was literally being swapped by a supernatural ice blast. It was the worst possible time for a friendship crisis between those two. “We know Scott has his brilliant moments, but you know sometimes he also needs someone to explain things to him very carefully before he gets it. I was quite understanding because despite you not giving me any details of how it happened, it’s plain obvious for me that you would only do such a thing in self defence or to protect someone. Tell him that and he will understand too.” Despite his words, Derek wasn’t so worried about it after Stiles mentioned Lydia. If anyone could make Stiles and Scott comes to good terms was her. Lydia knew how to get things done.
Tumblr media
“Fine... I will let you know if I find her. Stiles...” His words cut short when the constant beeping sound let him know Stiles hang up on him after that half-implied good bye. Another deep breath. Stiles would be fine. They all would. Now he needed to look for Allison.

Jackson was confused.  What was the difference between the way you treat your son and the way you treat your beta?  Well, except for deliberately breaking their bones, he thought.  But then he, Boyd, Erica and Isaac weren’t baby werewolves either,  So he imagined an Alpha had plenty of time to train a born werewolf, so they never needed to make their lessons harsh and quick so they could learn everything they needed to know in a short period of time. Jackson wondered, if he concentrated, if he could pick out which of the faces and screams were Derek’s mother, in his nightmares about the burning house. He never tried because he thought it would just make things that much more painful.
“I’m not exactly in contact with him, I’ve just run into him a couple of times, and we talked, you know.” Jackson listened to Derek praise Isaac.  It made him sort of sick.  Derek probably knew what Jackson had done, since Isaac was staying with him during the time that Sheriff Stilinski had questioned him. .”Um, we, yeah, kind of, I mean he lived across the street from me.  We weren’t like next-door neighbors or anything. We weren’t really friends.”
Jackson took the juice with grace, waving off Derek’s threats. ‘No, Derek, I do the same things that humans do, I drink!  Relaxing means you’re able to get out of your own head and just be blitzed, no worries, no thoughts, no decision making. Reading is literally the opposite of that, you are exclusively in your own head, thinking and processing and judging the character’s decisions.  It’s no wonder you hardly ever smile!  Jeez!  Actually I’m gonna try some fairly heavy drugs, and if that doesn’t do it, then I guess all I’ll have is sex.”
Tumblr media
CONFUSION was an emotion with a very characteristic smell to Derek, easy for him to recognise. This whole pack and community and family was clearly an tough subject for Jackson, which the older werewolf could perfectly understand and it led him to let the subject die once the boy didn’t say anything else on the matter. Family is usually the most personal chain of relationships one has and when that chain is damaged or has missing pieces, the process of fixing can be hard and painful. All Derek could do is hoped Jackson would find the people he could call family, regardless of blood bonds.
Derek knew it was possible, because it happened to him. Jackson himself was one of the people the young Hale dared to consider his family.
“I see... I guess you two didn’t have many changes to interact before you left to London. For most of the time you were here there was that whole situation and... You probably didn’t fancy him before, or Erica and Boyd since I... basically order them to go after you.” Unaware of the inner sickness Jackson was feeling towards his behaviour during the time Isaac was abused by his father, Derek was being hunted by his own demons, from the time he thought there was no way to save Jackson from being a kanima and killing people. “I never apologise for that, Jackson.” He started quietly, but voice always firm and sincere. “I’m truly sorry. I should have never thought you were beyond salvation.”
Reading was distracting and led Derek to worlds and problems far from his own, and sometimes even helped him clear his mind enough so he could analyse his life with lighter thoughts, so he couldn’t really get why Jackson didn’t approve it as a relaxing activity. The comment about him smiling made him frown though; Jackson had his memories from the fire, so the boy knew damn well why smile was something that didn’t come up that easily to Derek, but hey, he was better, wasn’t he? Even if just a little bit? “Drugs and sex? That’s going to be your ways to let the steam out? You really need to get a hobby. You should try gardening, they say it’s very unwinding.” The werewolf couldn’t help but smile at the picture inadvertently taking form in his mind. Jackson Whittemore gardening? It would be easier get him to hug Stiles and Scott. Ok. Maybe not. Either way, the idea was entertaining.

Isaac: Well if you would answer any of my calls you would know I'm already here.
Derek: Are you in Beacon Hills?!
Derek: I only saw the missed calls now
Derek: There was a blizzard and my phone lost signal after the first few hours.

“Outside then?” He suggested, not truly paying attention to the place because his eyes were to busy admiring her genuine happiness. Coming here was worth it already.
She grinned as she looked around, in awe of the structuring of the building. “I don’t know, anywhere is good” she beamed as she looked back at him

What Derek said made some sense.  If the could find the person responsible and take that person out, everything would stop. Of course there could be more than one person, or what if that person could do it from miles and miles away, there were a lot more circumstances that could stand in their way.  BUt it was no use getting paralyzed by them.  They may as well try to fins someone doing something, at least that was proactive. “Okay, so we find the person responsible for the blizzard.  Hopefully that someone in this school.  Or if not, I guess we can at least eliminate anyone in the school, right?”
Jackson looked closely at Derek.  He was good at hiding his emotions under what seemed to be a constant low level anger that he seemed to project constantly. But if you knew that was there, it was possible to see underneath, sometimes. “So, do you WANT to be part of McCall’s pack?”
“Don’t take the responsibility on yourself, Derek.  You taught me everything that you could, and you told me how to find an anchor, I just couldn’t do it. Maybe I’m too insensitive? If I could find one it would be great, much better than being in extreme pain all night and having to make up some excuse to my parents so I can heal for a day before I see them again.”  Jackson cocked his head at Derek.  “What made you give up anger if it was working for you?”
Tumblr media
“I’M afraid it’s not that simple.” Nothing was ever so simple when they were dealing with supernatural enemies in Beacon Hills, but despite their current risky situation, Derek was pleased to see Jackson willing to help. “I’m not entirely sure how we’re going to find the responsible, specially if they turned out to be these dread doctors the others have been talking about... But we can’t just stay here and do nothing. If we walk around paying attention to details we might get a few hints of what’s causing this. What do you say?”
The question was a surprise, but there wasn’t a single doubt in his heart regarding the answer to it. “I wanted. I would be lucky to be part of it.” He said, sincerity in each word. “But independent of what Scott and the others might consider me... They, Isaac, Cora, you. I consider you all my pack. Those I want to protect, who I care about.” At this, Derek smiled, thinking of the day Jackson arrived and they spent the afternoon at the loft. “Maybe in the same way you feel about me being your alpha. You know, regardless of pack hierarchy.”
Derek took a deep breath after Jackson’s response, which despite being as casual as the boy manage to fake, it made very clear the teenager wanted an anchor, but after all these full moons going wild he didn’t have much hope on finding one. And Derek was having none of that. “Look at me,” He said suddenly, holding the other werewolves shoulders firmly, as a way to pass confidence. “You’re going to find an anchor, ok? Sometimes it takes a while, but you can do it. And until you find it, I will help you deal with the full moons.”
Only once Derek talked about the recent change of his anchor, and he wasn’t expecting to talk about it again, not ever, but if it could somehow help Jackson find his, the older male was willing to share. “It was not really giving up... I didn’t fully realise the change until a while after it happened. It wasn’t until the last full moon that I noticed... That for the past months, it wasn’t the anger who kept me grounded. It was people I care about. People I want to protect, enough that the thought they might need my help them keeps me human.”

OF course Derek found the first aid kit. While the first instinct he had was to snap at him, Stiles refrained, albeit barely. “It’s not that bad,” he mumbled instead, though he struggled to remove his shirt all the same. The would actually did look worse than before, having been aggravated by the pressure and temperature of the water, of which he was well aware.
“Do we have to?” The question came across childishly, for he was extremely averse to being babied like this, and that was his first reaction. By then, he’d gotten his shirt mostly off, though it was still caught around his neck and injured shoulder. He would have continued to remove it, but it had gotten stuck there, and the arm he needed to finish taking it off hurt too much to lift high enough. How he’d gotten this thing on in the first place was beyond him.
“Uh– whether or not we actually do take care of it, I need help.” This was a simple thing, and yet he trusted Derek not to completely wrench his arm off while removing the shirt. “As in, I need help asap. As in, get over here– and don’t rip my shirt.”
It was easier to pretend as though everything was suddenly fine again than it was to continue looking upset. He could fake a smile well enough, and hide his pain when he needed to. Nobody but Derek would know what he was going through.
Tumblr media
IN a normal day, Derek would’ve certainly rolled his eyes and made some comment about how the wound was that bad, but today, where he found Stiles in such a vulnerable position, all the werewolf did was raised his eyebrows, as if they spoke a subtle and silent Really? he didn’t say out loud. It seemed to have the desired effect because soon the boy was stripping himself of his shirt.
“We don’t have to.” Derek started walking towards the boy, slowly. “But we should.” It was a simple and honest affirmative, and the werewolf was pleased to see after the moment they had, at least the boy was allowing the older male to take care of him. Even if it was in I-don’t-need-this-okay-I’m-just-doing-because-your-insistence-is-annoying kind of way.
The next thing he knew though, was that he was laughing. A real, spontaneous laugh, discrete and genuine as his laugh used to be. He didn’t mean to, but seeing Stiles get stuck in his shirt now of all times was just... Priceless. It would completely hilarious if not for the fact the reason why Stiles got in that situation in the first place was his wound and the pain of it.
Despite his brief laugh, Derek moved to help even before Stiles’ demands. However, instead of just helping the boy pull out the shirt, he hold the boy’s exposed waist with one hand, veins darkening as he drained the pain, enough so he could move Stiles’ arm and feel himself the pain the teenager wasn’t able to overcome in order to finish taking off his shirt.
“There. Now let me take care of that wound.” It was all the wolf said as he moved to retrieve the first aid kit he left on the bedside table. Derek hadn’t exactly thought about it before, but now he considered this night and what happened during the months he was way, it made him realised that evolving and being able to turn him into a full wolf also made him more resilient. He was able to take more pain without feeling weak.

So Jackson’s reach for an explanation wasn’t working for Derek.  The truth was, he didn’t know exactly why Derek had been able to sneak up on him. The snow was the best explanation, and it made it not Jackson’s fault, so he was all for that. “The snow is definitely weird. I could be affecting us in ways we can’t even realize right now. But I don’t know how we could possibly figure that out.  I mean your mind is your perception, and if your mind is compromised, you have to question everything.  But how do you reason it out if you can’t trust your own mind?” Jackson rubbed his forehead.  The whole situation was giving him a headache.
Jackson looked to Derek to lead him, something he was not at all used to doing.  Jackson was a leader.  He lead others.  He made his own decisions, his own plans, had control of his own life, as far as he possibly could. But not in this.  Because he could not think of a single thing that would help.  And he did trust Derek. “Okay, so do you mean McCall’s pack then? Is there any wolf in this town who isn’t in McCall’s pack?  Besides me.”
Jackson felt terrible for disappointing Derek. “Well I tried.  I thought that Lydia would be the best, but once I was there, I couldn’t hear her, or feel her.  And I wasn’t talking to her, so I just had the same memories, and they just didn’t hold me like I needed them to.  They would just sort of float away.  The same with Danny.
“So I tried you, but, like I said the link was different, and every time I tried to concentrate on you I could just feel how the bond wasn’t there how it used to be.
“So I tried lacrosse, but it just wasn’t specific enough I guess.  It was just all of these different moments of games, nothing specific to really focus on.” Jackson shrugged. “Sorry.  I tried everything you told me, I swear I did Derek, but nothing would work!  It’s not like that’s how I WANTED to spend my full moons.  But they could tell I wasn’t in control, and there were so many of them. I know that sounds like an excuse, but it’s also the truth.  I kept trying different things, I swear I did, but it just never worked out.”
Tumblr media
DEREK raised one eyebrow in response to Jackson’s line of questions. What even...? “Jackson, I think you’re spending way too much time with Stiles.” Or the older werewolf was just messing with him, but it was hard to say which. The problem is, all this mildly confusing speech of the boy made very sense in the current, supernaturally screwed up situation. “I guess the only way out is to give up on reasoning altogether.” He said after thinking briefly. “Let’s keeps this simple. If it’s supernatural, it means someone... Something is creating this storm. Hence, if we find out the responsible we can stop the blizzard.” That was easier said than done, but when was anything ever easy for them?
“I’m not entirely sure I’m from his pack either.” The young Hale confessed, shrugging slightly in way to pretend it was not much of a big deal to him. Which totally was. He didn’t know if Scott considered him part of his pack, and it’s not exactly something you ask in a casual conversation. “I think there are many more werewolves here than we think, Jackson.”
Finding a solid anchor was usually complicated for new werewolves, specially ones without pack, so Derek was capable of understanding Jackson difficulty. The boy’s explanation was clarifying, but it didn’t make any easier to know how the younger male struggled with that. “It’s okay, I’m not disappointed, Jackson. I just... I wish I had helped you to find an anchor before you left.” His eyes averted the boy’s as he tried to put his thoughts out into words. “For a long time my anchor was anger. The emotion was so strong for me all the time that it helped keep grounded whenever I needed to.” With a small smile, he looked back at Jackson. “But I found a new anchor, way better. And I think you can find one too. I will help you.”
