the question should have been simple, a word or two, a truth or a lie, even the utterance of a common phobia to obscure the wave of heat that would set his very being on edge. fear was a fickle thing, and it seemed miles had plenty to account for. now, one might think it only fair to examine the logical choices. perhaps it was the way the earth shifted and trembled, those very incidents where he would drop to his knees and hold himself in the place of another, or the way those violent , shrill whispers in the night cried for his father , how his chest would tighten for a moment , suffocated between silk sheets. the way fear would wrap its barbed talons around his neck , and the only evil he feared was not the creatures so often associated with the night , but the living beings that haunted him like the spirits of the dead. did he fear defeat? perhaps. a loss in court all those years ago would have sent him reeling , white knuckled and pale with fury . a younger model of his personage would have faced reprimand , venomous expressions hissed between gritted teeth . he’d be reminded , as he so often did , of his sins . to the dishonor he brought upon both blood family and adoptive kin . he did fear these things , as so many others would , though even they weren’t enough to pierce his soul with a single tendril and shatter him like glass .

there is , evidently , a single thing that lurks behind dubious action and dramatic persona. yes, miles does fear one thing above all others ; loss . not loss in the connotation of death , no , though he’s suffered plenty of that , but the fresh wound that opens when one you care for leaves . miles fears the loss of his friends , his sister , his FAMILY , above all else.

⠀ ⠀ it isn’t as if he doesn’t understand the DISTRESS and FRUSTRATION the younger man feels. the harsh sting of BETRAYAL is still imbued, fresh in his mind’s eye. it’s been nearly a decade since that december, but the wound still leaves a tender scar. he pities him.
