I wanna add onto this post, I felt it was really insightful and could apply to Mozasu too. There's this one scene when Mozasu visits John Maryman's english classes with Yumi. He says he wants to make lots of money and John just gives him a smile, and dismisses these ideas. I think similarly, John represents the Western (particularly white, wealthy) perspective. He was raised by wealthy white parents, he went to Yale Divinity School and he believes he should help his fellow Koreans by giving them the English language. Of course Mozasu's desire for wealth seems uncouth and bold to John, and of course ironically this reaction only comes from the privileged. Yet, Mozasu's desire for wealth is stated earlier on when Hansu visits the farm (note how Hansu actually laughs and encourages Mozasu - although Mozasu was only a child and therefore seemed silly, I think Hansu did understand this drive considering his own background), and again when it is distilled into wanting his family to live a comfortable life. Thus, like icedsodapop says, this desire for power and wealth is a reflection of the circumstances of Mozasu, and the dynamics of the Korean minority in Japan.
There's something so annoying when reading reviews of Pachinko by American critics calling Solomon "unlikeable" and saying that he has "led a privileged life". Yes, when compared to his elders, Solomon has led a life of relative comfort but he's also a Zainichi Korean who has experienced anti-Korean discrimination in Japan and has also spent his adult life being an Asian man in majority White institutions (Yale and Wall Street) in America during the Reaganite era. Solomon wants that American dream. His frustration and anger and hunger for power are all informed by these experiences. It's annoying to see critics miss out important historical context. It's annoying to see audiences (esp White ones) not want characters of colour who are written to be flawed. It's annoying to see audiences dislike/unable to sympathize with flawed characters of colour even when they have tragic backstories, while defending White characters who have done worse.

Real life Long Walk, boys-
Not sure how many of you are aware of this but in case anyone hasn't heard of it: here in Sweden we actually have something called Footrally/Fotrally, it's an annual event based off of The Long Walk competition and anyone over the age of 18 is able to request entry. It's basically the same rules (with some altercations in the walkers favor) except no one dies ofc lmao.
It's also referred to by the name "Marathon marschen" which is the Swedish name of the book, meaning "The Marathon March"
Anyway, just a fun fact :D

THISSS PLEASE short haired camilla 😭😭
also richard literally mentions how mid henry is and the only thing that saves his looks are his clothes 💀
One day (soon) I'll start another reread of The Secret History, and this time I'll be writing down all descriptions of the Greek gang's and other characters's actual physical appearances from the book, because I can't take yalls depictions of Camilla in fanart and moodboards as this dainty, delicate petite girl with hair anywhere below her chin (boyish haircut? what boyish haircut? :o) and Henry as a brutal drop dead gorgeous sex on legs (and stop forgetting his scar and his bangs he covers it with)

tw for racial slurs/casual racism in general lol (against asians and african americans)
the tumblr girlies should stop sleeping on donna tartt's the little friend. it has something for everyone. the waifish coquette dollettecore lana del rey aesthetic preachers. the weirdgirls™. the ones with religious trauma. the southern gothic enjoyers. the has-been formerly rich + stately family enthusiasts. unconventional family lovers. americana advocates. childhood adventures tainted by a dark presence appreciators.
murder past, death everlooming, danger sought, hazy summers and fabricated memories. it feels like a soporiferous, hazy, hot summer afternoon daydreaming about your town's mysteries and making up unseemly explanations for them or reading your favorite childhood adventure book while knowing how it would realistically end.
tw for repeated use of the n word tho
