Greta & Tommy

Before Grace. Before Lizzie. Before the war and the man we see in Season 1 with the thousand-yard stare—there was Greta Jurossi.

Greta is one of those blink-and-you'll-miss-it subplots in Peaky Blinders, but once you've seen it it ties in perfectly to everything we know about Tommy.. She's the Juliet to his early Romeo—except this Romeo matured into a man no longer capable of that kind of love.

Greta was Italian (what a season 4 surprise.. 🙄 just lovely)—a wealthier family than Tommy's, just enough disparity to make it seem like trespass to be together. Young Tommy didn't mind. He was already dreaming bigger and Greta encouraged it. She believed in ideas. Justice. Social change. Communism— the hopeful, utopian version.

He told Lizzie, "I promised someone I would change the world…"

Greta wanted him to be a leader. And he believed her, at first. He was young, idealistic.

Greta died of tuberculosis—something so horribly normal and entirely unfair. It destroyed him. And then he went off and fought in the war, came back, and he killed the dreamer. Became the builder. And continued to build a kingdom on crime.

Season 4 opens with Tommy at a low point of his emotional cycle. He's distant, cold, mechanical, a man without an outward center. The Greta twist brought the past alive and it reached him. He could have taken Lizzie anywhere and instead brings her to his special spot with Greta by the canal where they would wait hours for one another… my heart.

By introducing Greta retrospectively, Steven Knight stretches the timeline of Tommy's tragedy. His pain did not begin with war—it began before war. War merely broke into fragments what was already on the point of breaking. He didn't become disillusioned due to war alone. He became disillusioned because life taught him that hope dies young.

This was all spurred on by my recent rewatch of s4 and seeing the Romeo and Juliet ballet running near me that was fantastic (I cried)!!! Dancers are so talented.
