Hello! I was wondering. How do you resist the urge to redraw old pages of Namesake? I am working on a webcomic and struggling not to redraw the old pages. They are comparatively Not Good compared to the most recent one and it is driving me a bit crazy.
Dear @sylvanbrushes
I don’t redraw my pages for a few reasons.
(1) If i’m drawing Namesake for a trillion years, I cannot draw other things, and while I love Namesake, it’s not the only story I have to tell.
(2) While some edits to get the book ready for print are a-ok, I discourage redraws because like - current you is always better then past you, BUT future you will also be better then current you. And current you could not have improved without past you fucking up a bit and trying. The first step to being good at something is sucking at something. If you start redrawing, you are basically constantly competing with yourself, and that’s an awful dynamic to live with. I used to think my art peaked at chapter 20, and now that I’m on chapter 32, chapter 20 looks like ASS to me. It’s never-ending
(3) Serials are about evolution, if a reader wants a consistent story, they can read a graphic novel.
(4) I’ve learned to enjoy and appreciate the mistakes of the past, as they are the foundation that had to exist for my comic to even grow to it’s current point.
(5) REDRAWING IS ACTUALLY REALLY HARD and kills the initial charm of the story. Because it’s NOT just redoing the art. The paneling is also going to be less strong. And the text. And the colors. And recapturing the initial charm of the original page is very difficult. Any new page you make to replace it is going to look more beautiful, but it’s not going to feel the same. A lot of readers got attached to the older art too - anytime I change a cover, everybody tells me to put the old one back.
(6) You don’t actually need the comic to look nice. Most people will read stuff that looks like butts if the story is good and the art is communicative. You mainly need good art for marketing, and you can just draw marketing art specifically for that.
(7) The only person who cares about the original art looking bad is yourself, because you are comparing yourself to others and how their art fucking slapped already on chapter 1, but those guys also feel like their chapter 1 sucks. Nobody is happy with chapter 1. Moving on is for the best.
(8) If anybody refuses to read a story because of the art, it happens and that’s fine. It happens if the art is amazing too. It’s about vibes. If anybody refuses to read a story because of the art and TELLS you, they are a dipship trying to hurt your feelings and can go straight to hell.

Next level tumblr discourse will probably be like "stories written in a 1st person perspective are emotionally manipulative because they're being told by an unreliable narrator and are forcing me to believe a subjective experience is actually fact :("

a writer who writes the most fucked up “dead dove: do not eat” problematic pairing and fully tags and warns for the content they create will always be worthy of more respect in my eyes than people who call others weirdos because of who they ship. This is because a writer who writes disturbing things but gives me plenty of warning about them has demonstrated, regardless of what happens in the fic, that they value the consent of real people, and that they value my consent to see such content and will always offer me the option to avoid or withdraw. On the other hand, a purity cultist who demands I explain my trauma and exactly why I might be drawn to dark content, regardless of whether they’re the purest fluff writer to ever write, has demonstrated a lack of respect for my boundaries and the attitude that they are entitled to whatever they want to take from me.
There are a lot of things that bother me about purity culture, but I think the most disturbing is that it clouds the very definition of consent, and then teaches this confusing version (you must consent to deep dives into your trauma and how it affects you for the benefit of strangers who have already decided you’re a bad person, and not consenting to that automatically makes you an abuser, also no one can consent to reading or thinking about disturbing content ever because thinking about it means you want it irl) to young, vulnerable, and often traumatized individuals, thus making it harder to understand their trauma and easier for them to ignore the real warning signs of abuse (like demanding that you agree with the abuser otherwise you’re literally the worst and most harmful person ever) because it teaches that abusers only come in one type, and that all abusers are “nasty shippers”.
This is especially dangerous because real life abusers teach their victims that the abuse is happening because the victim is a bad, evil person. One of the diagnostic criteria for PTSD is literally “Places undue blame on themself or others for what happened”. Teaching traumatized people that consent is a luxury only “good” people are allowed to have is incompatible with support for abuse survivors. tl;dr a writer who tags “dead dove: do not eat” has demonstrated respect for the necessity of consent. A purity cultist who sends anon hate has demonstrated a lack of respect for consent.

Also brings a new level to that scene by the river because he's like thrusting his undone shirt and lacy bra at Geralt asking, "Well? What do you think of my singing? Be honest now :))) "
Like all he's missing is twirling his hair, I love it sm
i mean im no expert on tudor fashion and the witcher just loves to blend time periods for inspiration but jaskier’s costumes are clearly extremely tudor influenced and given that on like, a formal occasion Jaskier does seem to wear his doublet laced closed like doublets are supposed to be (tho it looks like it’s maybe fastened rather than laced? idk man im not a costumer i just love historical fashion)
the fact that most of the rest of the time he’s going around with his doublet unlaced to show his cute embroidered undershirt (i looked up if it had a specific name in tudor fashion and like it does it’s called a chemise which im used to meaning ‘women’s underwear’ for most of modern fashion history, and chemises don’t often have embroidery and embellishments because like, they’re not meant to be seen, altho it’s not uncommon for wealthier people)
he’s essentially wearing the equivalent of the unbottoned shirt to show a cute lacy bralette underneath

It's all good if it's equal treatment 👌
older lotr illustrations sometimes depict éowyn wearing ridiculously small armour. apart from the problem general sexualisation of the only female character (who really does anything), there’s another hilarious thought:
éowyn pretended to be dernhelm, a man. to fit in, she must have worn men’s armor. so the armor in the illustrations is normal for rohirrim.
therefore, all the rohirrim rode to war just like that:

Legit tears, y'all. I just recently voiced fears to my therapist about being a "fujoshi" - literally, "rotten woman" - a woman that enjoys fanfiction and gay fanfiction. Not only did fandom first get me into drawing and eventually into the art field I'm currently in, it helped me sort out my own confusing sexuality and led me to spaces online that helped me put words to my sexuality. I'm going to turn 31 this month and I'm just starting to draw my own comics and write fanfiction, because I see spaces that are still active and I see posts like this and it gives me a sense of solidarity. I felt judged all the time for what I like, especially older, "outdated" fandoms. But I stifled a creative outlet for so long and it feels good to finally create. I know there are others out there who feel the same or stunt their own creativity because they get judged on gender or age or both. If it helps to have another opinion, my therapist has said she didn't know about fanfiction culture but when I talked about my projects, she said it sounded like a healthy outlet, and she couldn't understand where the judgement came from - outside of gamer boy gatekeeping. So screw everyone else, enjoy what you like, and go create something if you want to - all of us "rotten women" would love to see it!
Look i dont wanna sound like a Fandom Mom or whatever but what do you think women over 25 or so are supposed to do? Do u really think theyre supposed to drop all their interests and just talk about taxes and marriage or whatever? It seems like 25+ year old fanboys do not receive this kind of “ooh cringe” reaction either. There are guys in their 40s with comic book collections and shit and people might think theyre a nerd at worst, not a freak who shouldnt be trusted

Why do artists refuse to use references why why why.
It’s not a contest to see who can get by without them. It’s not cheating to look at a thing in order to know what the thing looks like.
You don’t get stronger or better by pretending. Nobody is impressed by the awkward whatever-it-is you just drew. Use references.
