The process of plastic injection moulding truly starts with part and mould design, polymer selection, and prototyping to ensure a top-quality result. While these preliminary but critical stages may take a few weeks, the actual injection moulding process is so efficient, many parts can be fully moulded in mere seconds. Here's how it works.
Closing the Mould
Whether preparing for the initial moulding cycle or after ejecting the previously moulded part, the first step is to close the mould so that all openings are blocked except the gate (to allow melted plastic to enter the mould), the mould cavity (where the actual part is moulded), and tiny vents which allow the airflow needed for successful Mold suppliers.
Injecting Polymer
A barrel is filled with pellets of the selected polymer resin with an auger or screw inside. As the auger moves, the pellets move from the feeder area into a zone where the barrel is heated to start melting the resin to a certain temperature. As the auger moves forward, the melted polymer resin is forced at high pressure into the mould, displacing the air inside, which escapes through the tiny vents.
Cooling
Naturally, the melted plastic must cool and harden in the mould in order to retain its shape. Moulds are designed with channels to allow a coolant, normally water and/or ethylene glycol, to flow through and cool the mould and the part inside it at a carefully determined rate by the Mold suppliers.
Reloading the Barrel
When the part is cooled down, the auger starts moving back and the barrel is then again loaded with additional polymer pellets to get prepare for the next cycle.
Ejection
While the pellets are heating, the mould opens and the cooled part is removed from the mould by ejector pins which push it away from the mould surface where it drops into a chute, conveyor system or box.

Finally, parts are checked to make sure that they meet our highest quality standards, and any finishing steps are performed, such as removing any rough edges left where the mould halves meet.
