my general belief is that they all change a LOT after hamsr dies. horatio was a little more laid back and hamlet was much livelier and happier, but leaving wittenburg changes all that.

Page 1: i really wanted to draw horatio with a sword. that’s it. but i do think he would’ve done some fencing at wittenburg! i know modern fencing wasn’t invented until after hamlet takes place, but a man can dream. i think horatio would’ve fenced foil— it just fits his personality to me? you have to be very careful and precise because it has the smallest target area of the three styles, and you have to preserve your right of way. probably nobody in foil history has ever pulled the move he’s using in the top drawing (it’s not illegal, but it’s horribly inefficient and is basically a free point to your opponent) but i wanted it for the ~dramatics~

hamlet would be trained in all three but i think he would specialize in épée. epee is a very defense forward form (fitting for our non confrontational prince) and it’s also the only mode of classical fencing where the legs are a valid target, and as we all know, hamlet just loves, well, cutting the legs out from under people. and my laertes fences sabre so i wanted the contrast there! i only know foil, but i would love to how to fence epee as well. living vicariously through emo danish princes.

hamlet and horatio definitely talked so much shit on the sidelines of each match.

Page 2: some good ol wittenburg fluff, hamlet definitely slept through all his classes. and a little moment in the snow!

i’ve wanted to give benedikt (and alisa) freckles for the longest time but i keep forgetting. SO HERE HE IS. WITH FRECKLES. yay :)

row 3: i’m only like, three weeks late to lunar new year… juliette with sparklers + fishing!! for good luck!! (or gunning i guess..?)

it’s been (almost!!) a full year since i posted this drawing!! and it’s still getting notes lolll to celebrate here’s a redraw :) i think the old one has a certain charm to it that i can’t quite replicate but oh how i do love these new poses… maybe i’ll come back in another year and see how much my art has changed by then~

been thinking about post canon benvolio lately, he’s probably shit at coping

shoutout to everybody on retj tumblr for their cyrilvolio headcanons!! his entire design rests squarely on your shoulders <3 only thing i have to add is that i hc mercutio’s bday to be in march and benvolio’s to be in august and mercutio NEVER stops bragging about being five months older until he like. dies. so that’s the first panel ^u^

i woke up one day and decided it would be a great day to test my limits, so everything in this piece (with the exception of the sketch) was drawn with nothing but the procreate flat brush at 100% opacity. definitely a challenge considering my usual art style, but it taught me a lot about blend modes + shapes and the importance of trusting the process! would do again maybe possibly?
