❝   Bruce   Wayne,   I   presume.   ❞   She   didn’t   have   to   assume   ANYTHING   —   she   knew.   He   was   easier   to   identify   than   a   marvelous   tale.   THEY   ALL   WERE,   but   it   wasn’t   her   place   to   give   JUDGEMENT.   Gotham   City   wasn’t   really   HER   place   at   all,   but   she   drifted   there   for   more   reasons   than   one.   Maybe   she   was   terrified   to   move   home   —   maybe   she   didn’t   recognize   where   HOME   was   anymore   —   maybe   she   was   just   BUYING   TIME   before   she   had   to   deal   with   whatever   HAPPENED   to   her.   IT   DIDN’T   MATTER.   Whatever   it   was   DIDN’T   MATTER.   She’d   found   her   place   there   (   another   STORY   cropped   up,   but   could   one   truly   be   shocked   ?   )   &   she   wasn’t   heading   back   to   STAR   until   she   had   all   the   fragments   in   her   palms.   ❝   You’re   a   HARD   MAN   to   get   a   hold   of,   you   know   that   ?   ❞ 

He shifts his eyes from the newspaper opened over his crossed legs,  glancing up to assess the  unfamiliar  face.  Typically,  he liked his midmorning coffee to go  u n i n t e r r u p t e d.  Which is why he went out of his way to leave the Wayne Enterprises offices to have his coffee in  peace  at his favorite café in the city.  After all,  his life rarely allotted much time for peace of mind.  And even when it did,  he found himself   d i s t r u s t i n g   the calm.  Thus,  these moments of peace were  i m p o r t a n t.  However,  this scheduled down time was  also  more for   Alfred’s   peace of mind than his own.  It didn’t hurt that it helped with the character establishment of  Bruce Wayne.  The mask he’d carefully crafted over the last decade or so,  to allow for him to be both what  GOTHAM  needed,  and who  he  needed to be.  

But in this moment,  he wasn’t sure if it was   g e n u i n e   curiosity or the reflexive mask that fell into place as he refolded the newspaper and lifted his chin fully to look at the woman before him.        ❛        I  do.  But it seems like you managed just fine,        ❜        he replies as he place the now folded paper on the table,  nudging it slightly beneath his plate.  There is something about her that he  r e c o g n i z e s,  but in the moment he can’t recall.  So instead,  he allows his brows to  pucker  slightly in confusion and curiosity as he asks         ❛        And I’m assuming you’re not here just to say hello,  so how can I help you Miss  ...  ?        ❜
