it's all wrong.
when mingyu wakes up, a white ceiling presses down on him, the scent of oranges suffocates him, and skin that is brushing against his isn't warm.
he feels uneasy, his skin prickling at all these foreign sensations.
it's all wrong.
he should have been looking up at tattered glow-in-the-dark stickers on a pale blue ceiling. he should have been in the embrace of sweet roses that always managed to make him feel at home. he should have been touching skin that keeps him warm through the coldest winter nights.
he should have done a lot of other things too.
he didn't.
"y/n, i know you're in there," comes your best friend's voice. he's teetering on the edge of exasperation, but you can only laugh to yourself.
it's a pathetic sound, and you can only think of when it used to be much happier.
"you better be decent," seungkwan warns, before he's punching in the code to your apartment and letting himself in. the stench of alcohol hits him first, and then his eyes land on you—slumped against the couch, hand clutching an empty bottle of alcohol, and a hazy look in your red-rimmed eyes.
"you promised you wouldn't do this to yourself anymore," seungkwan whispers, biting back all the nagging and scolding when he sees your blank, regretful smile.
"promises aren't a real concept anymore, kwan," you croak out, voice hoarse from all the crying. "they're never real."
you repeat the words like a mantra, sometimes in your head, and sometimes out loud. seungkwan bites his tongue to stop himself from crying in front of you as he helps you get off the floor, drink some water, and sleep in your bed.
"i'll stay the night," seungkwan tells you, already pulling out the air mattress he bought for himself ever since you started drinking to the brink of alcohol poisoning. "tell me if you need anything."
him, you think. i need him. kim mingyu. he's all i’ve ever needed.
seungkwan can read your mind, and he stays silent after that.
you fall asleep without saying anything, and old glow-in-the-dark stars and real laughter haunt your dreams again.
it was the most beautiful thing you'd experienced in your life before it became the ugliest.
kim mingyu entered your life like a tornado when he crashed into your car on a sunday morning, four years ago. he left you with a wrecked rear bumper, a rapidly beating heart, his number scrawled across your palm, and a promise of taking you out on a date.
you forgot about the rear bumper quickly after that, and texted the number the second mingyu walked out of the car repair shop.
. . .
you (11:30 a.m.) :
ill be waiting on that date, kim mingyu
mingyu (11:31 a.m.) :
lets go grab brunch together
im still standing right outside
you (11:32 a.m.) :
see you there :)
. . .
it was no surprise that you fell for him as fast as you did.
it was difficult not to. especially when mingyu was the man of your dreams.
he'd hold your hand for every second of your dates, even after you told him your palms get sweaty. he'd remember all the tiny little details about you that only your best friend would know. he'd know exactly what food you dislike, and would never order it for himself either.
mingyu quickly fell for you too.
with every meal at random restaurants. with every movie night spent cuddling under a single blanket. with every touch of your hand, with every press of your lips, with every second he spends with you, he fell.
it took two months after the car crash for mingyu to ask you to be his girlfriend.
when you met seungkwan for your regular catch-up session, you told him about mingyu.
"he's perfect, seungkwan," you sighed dreamily. "i think he's the one."
seungkwan loves it when you're happy, but he hated that you were so blind in your love for mingyu to give all of yourself to him so quickly.
he gave you a silent smile. maybe, just maybe, if you'd taken a moment to reconsider taking things at a slower pace with mingyu, if you hadn't been so swept up in his charming eyes or your strong attraction to him, you would've read the look in seungkwan's eyes.
the look of caution.
it's the same look seungkwan is giving you now, as you down your fourth shot of.... something.
"slow down?" you tilt your head, the word feeling unfamiliar on your tongue. "when have i ever taken things slow?"
the night ends the way it ends every other time; seungkwan has to drag you back to your apartment, make sure you don't trip on the unopened boxes of furniture, give you water, and then sleep on the air mattress placed permanently next to your bed.
the next morning starts the way it usually does; you throw your guts up the second your eyes open, and all the wounds the alcohol helped close for you open up once again.
back then, despite all of seungkwan's kind warnings, you ignored him. you knew you loved mingyu, and mingyu loved you back. seungkwan never brought up the topic again. he convinced himself that you were an adult, and you knew what you were doing.
for the two years of happiness you spent with mingyu, you thought the same.
it was one of those whirlwind romances people see in the movies.
in month three of your relationship, you shared pieces of your heart with mingyu that you've never shared with other people. you'd fallen in deep.
in month five, you both said i love you to each other. some say it's too soon, but you could only think of how it wasn't soon enough. you fell in deeper.
by month eight, you moved in with him. mingyu started coming home to you cooking him dinner. you'd spend the night washing dishes and then slow dancing in the living room with all the lights turned down low. the two of you kept falling, hurtling downwards rapidly, without any care for when the end might come.
after a year with mingyu, you were already hearing wedding bells and looking up wedding dresses on pinterest.
it's too soon. it's too fast. slow down.
a seungkwan-like voice kept nagging you from the back of your head, but you tuned it out.
what mingyu and you have is true love. true love doesn't need to be taken slow.
he's at the club. there's a girl hanging off his arm, her hand splayed across his chest, and the strong scent of lavender makes him want to throw up.
for a second, mingyu almost says, i have a girlfriend, please leave.
but he realises that he doesn't. not anymore.
mingyu forces himself to look at the girl who's been chatting his ear off for an hour, and he feels sick to his stomach when he realises that she isn't you.
no one will ever be you.
still, mingyu finds himself pressed up against her on the dance floor. still, he lets her take him back to her apartment. still, he finds himself touching her.
and still, it's your face, your body, your voice, your presence that haunts him.
mingyu would give up all his senses if it meant that he wouldn't have the image of you burned into the back of his eyelids every time he closes them.
(mingyu’s also a liar, because giving up his senses means giving up the only way he'd be able to see you, now that you've left his life for good.)
"will you marry me?" mingyu asks, and the question knocks the air out of your lungs. you're tangled up under the sheets, mingyu's arm draped on your waist, and your leg swung across his hip.
"you're kidding me, right?" you laugh, going back to drawing random patterns on mingyu's skin.
mingyu wordlessly turns around, and you miss the absence of his touch for all of three seconds. you hear him rummaging through the drawer of the bedside table, and for a moment, mingyu's words feel real.
the realization sets in when mingyu turns back to you, a blue velvet box in his hands.
"open it up," he tells you, and with trembling hands, you take the box and open it.
inside, there's a beautiful diamond ring, and your breath hitches in your throat.
"mingyu-"
"i love you, y/n," he cuts you off, and you hear his voice go raspy and high like it does whenever he's on the verge of tears. "you're the only person i've ever felt this strongly for. i know that we've been together only for two years, and people might call me foolish for rushing into things so quickly, but i'm sure of this. this is—you are—all i've ever wanted.."
you feel mingyu shift in bed next to you, and you turn to see him sitting up. he takes your hands in his and pulls you up to sit next to him. he doesn't let go as he takes the ring out from the box and holds it in front of your ring finger.
"i've never been more serious about anything before, so don't think this is just a heat-of-the-moment thing," mingyu says, nervousness seeping into his tone. "y/n, will you marry me?"
think about it. it's only been two years. this is an important decision. take it sl-
"yes."
"yes?" mingyu asks in disbelief.
"yes, mingyu," you nod, tears flooding your eyes. "i will marry you."
the feeling of mingyu slipping the ring onto your finger, the feeling of mingyu pulling you in for a passionate kiss, the feeling of both your hearts intertwining because of this new shift in your relationship outweighs and drowns out the voice of caution in your head.
take it slow.
but it feels so right.
"seungkwan, you said you had a friend who asked for my number, right?"
it was a random thursday evening, and seungkwan was at your place, helping you clear out all the boxes in your living room from your shift to a new apartment.
"yeah, his name is wonwoo," seungkwan nods, looking at you with curiosity. "why do you wanna know?"
"you can give him my number," you say, eyes not meeting seungkwan's inquisitive gaze.
"y/n, are you sure?" seungkwan asks, standing up from his corner to go sit next to you. "it's only been five months-"
"you told me i should be moving on, right?" you cut him off. "that's what i'm doing."
"that quickly?" seungkwan questions. "y/n, i know you, so you don't have to pretend to be okay. you guys were engaged, and you expect me to believe that you're ready to see other people? it's not fair to you or wonwoo."
"i know what i'm doing," you sigh. "but fine, if you won't set me up with wonwoo, i can just go find another date. it's not that big of a deal-"
"you still love him," seungkwan states firmly.
you ignore him and continue talking. "i can't just mope around and sulk forever. i need to-"
"you're still in love with kim mingyu, don't even try to deny it, y/n," seungkwan stops you again. "i'm your best friend, and i can see it in your eyes. "
your shoulders droop, and you look at a picture frame you picked up from one of the boxes.
a girl was sitting next to a large window, an oversized hoodie draped over her figure. her face was turned away from the camera, and her long hair fell down her shoulders in messy waves.
it was just a picture, but anyone looking at it would feel warmth, and love. when you looked at it, the feelings once associated with it had gone cold a long time back.
your hands run through your hair, now cut short and barely reaching past your shoulders, and you toss the picture frame into the box labelled 'waste'.
click!
you whip your head around to see mingyu crouched on the floor, camera held up to his face, and the lens directed at you.
"gyu! my hair probably looks like a bird's nest now," you whine, realizing that he had taken a picture of you. you get up from the windowsill you were sitting on and go over to your boyfriend.
wanting a peek at his sneaky picture, you grab at his arms to steal a glance at his camera, but your attempts fail as he swiftly dodges all of your attacks. with his long arms, he's able to set the camera out of your reach. however, before you can protest, he picks you up in his arms and kisses you softly.
"good morning, love," he whispers against your lips, and you wrap your arms around his neck tighter.
"i wish you didn't have to go," you mumble, pressing kisses to all of mingyu's face.
"i'll be back before you know it," he assures you with a hint of sincerity in his eyes.
mingyu was leaving for a three-month photography tour he had been invited to. it was an important milestone for him, because it meant that he was finally getting acknowledged in the industry. and as his girlfriend, no, fiancée, you obviously had to support him.
but it didn't mean that you were going to miss him any less.
"you need to text me at least thrice a day, send me loads of pictures, and facetime whenever you're free, got it?" you remind him, and he laughs.
"what if you're asleep when i facetime you?"
"i'll wake up to talk to you," you nod resolutely. "i expect daily updates, kim mingyu."
"yes ma'am," he salutes, and you laugh too.
soon, it's time for mingyu to get into a cab that will take him to the airport, and all you can do is wave goodbye and kiss him deeply before he steps into the car.
"i love you," he tells you, and you mouth the words back to him as the window of the car rolls up.
the cab drives away, and you're left standing on the sidewalk, still wearing mingyu's hoodie.
the first two weeks pass smoothly, with mingyu's incessant texts and calls. aside from the fact that you were sleeping alone in your shared bed, and there wasn't anyone to have your meals with, it almost felt like mingyu had never left.
you get a package at the start of week three. it's from mingyu, and upon opening it, you see that it's a framed picture.
the photograph is black and white, and you recognize it as the picture he had secretly taken of you the morning he left.
a note in the package reads:
'this city is beautiful, but i miss the beauty of having you by my side the most. just a couple more months, and i'll be back. with love, mingyu.'
just two more months, you tell yourself, clutching the frame to your chest.
little did you know, two months was more than enough time for your relationship to come falling apart.
castles made out of sand don't last for long, after all; all it takes is one wave for it to be swept off.
"can i get another one of these?" you ask the bartender, gesturing to your empty glass, and he nods. you slump up against the bar again, the events of the evening replaying in your head.
you had finally gone out on a date with a guy from work. he had shown interest in you for a long time, but back then, you had a ring on your finger and the vague promise of a wedding looming over your head.
now, however, you were free to date whomever you wanted.
(if freedom meant living without the one person who your heart longs for the most, you wish you could give it up.)
the date had been a disaster.
the entire time, while the guy kept talking about his interests and his dog, all you could see in front of you was tan skin, pointy canines, a mole decorating the tip of the nose, and the warm smile you loved so dearly.
all you could see was mingyu.
no matter how much you tried, you couldn't get him out of your head. it got to the point where your brain tuned the guy out completely, and for a while, your senses stopped working.
all you could feel was mingyu, mingyu, mingyu.
"i have to go," you had choked out apologetically before rushing out of the restaurant and heading to the nearest bar to get shit-faced.
"why am i so pathetic?" you mutter to yourself, a few hours later, in the back of seungkwan's car. "why can't i stop loving him? even after he hurt me?"
"the heart wants what it wants" seungkwan sighs, glancing back at your limp figure in his car.
"you'll be okay, y/n," he tells you, but you're not sure if you ever will.
everywhere you look, all you see is mingyu.
by month two of his photography trip, mingyu had stopped texting as frequently, and that's exactly when everything began to fall apart.
your texts went unanswered for hours, and you would get only a few short replies from mingyu over the span of multiple days, so, eventually, you stopped texting him about your day in detail.
he never answered your calls, so, eventually, you stopped calling him whenever you missed him at night.
and then came the next change: mingyu called you, a week before he was set to come back home, only to tell you that the photographer he's idolized all his life wanted mingyu to join him in america for a month.
"it's the opportunity of a lifetime," mingyu said, voice brimming with excitement. "but if you don't want me to-"
"mingyu, you're going to america," you cut him off. "i'm so happy for you, love. and don't worry about me, i'll manage just fine for another month."
"thank god, i expected you to start crying over the phone," mingyu said with a laugh, and it was probably a joke, but the words stung a little more than they should have. "okay, i gotta go. talk to you later?"
"sure, gyu," you replied, trying to tamp down the momentary sadness you felt. "i love y-"
the line went dead before you could finish, and your heart sunk.
mingyu stops saying that he loves you, so, eventually, you stop saying it too.
ten months have passed since the breakup, and you're finally getting a hold on yourself. there are some bad days where you can't even get out of bed without crying your eyes out over the absence of him in your life. but on other days, you manage to shower, make yourself breakfast, go to work, and distract yourself from the fact that you're going home to an apartment that feels strange and unfamiliar; a far cry from the coziness of the home you shared with mingyu.
still, you keep pushing through. it's a new beginning, you tell yourself, even though all you want to do is go back to the past.
you tell seungkwan just as much, and all he says in response is, "remind yourself of why you left, y/n. yes, you loved each other, but maybe love isn't always enough."
so, on a particularly bad sunday morning, that marked five years since the day you had first met mingyu, you let yourself remember exactly why you left him.
you don't leave the bed till later that evening, when you have no more tears left to shed, and the scars of past memories have been etched into your skin all over again.
five months. it's been five months since mingyu left for his three-month photography trip, and he's set to come home today.
you spent all morning cleaning the house, calling his mother for his favorite recipes, and putting on his favorite dress, just to make everything perfect.
the last text you had sent him had gone unanswered since the previous night, hence you had no idea what time mingyu's flight would land. you wait the entire day for the apartment door to open, but afternoon shifts to evening, fresh food goes stale, and mingyu still isn't home.
it's close to 1 in the morning when you're awoken by another presence in the living room. you had fallen asleep on the couch after eating instant ramen for dinner, but when you open your eyes, all sleep leaves you in an instant.
"mingyu," you whisper, and your fiance sets down his suitcase and bags, opening his arms up for a hug. you rush to him and hug him tightly, burying your face in the crook of his neck, dirty airport clothes be damned.
"i missed you so much," you whisper, and mingyu only responds with a kiss to your shoulder. he pulls back first, and you see the exhaustion written all over his face.
"can we talk in the morning?" he asks, giving you a small smile. "i'm really tired now."
"of course," you nod. mingyu kisses your forehead as a small thank you before leaving to shower. you'd be lying if you said you didn't feel disappointed when he didn't even hold you in your sleep that night.
it's alright, he's just tired, you tell yourself. and that night, you still shiver in the cold bed, even though mingyu is back in it.
the talk never happens the next morning. mingyu leaves for a photoshoot right after breakfast, and you haven't even had the chance to kiss him properly ever since he came back home.
the talk never happens at all. you both move past it, as if the last four months of silence and distance hadn't affected your relationship at all.
it was wishful thinking on your part to think that you and mingyu could bounce back from the last four months unscathed. you tried so hard to not to overthink how mingyu wasn't the same anymore.
he'd work longer hours, and when you asked him about his day, he'd just give you short answers. he'd rarely say the words 'i love you' back to you. his smiles stopped reaching his eyes. his body stopped seeking your touch.
it felt like with every passing day, the chasm that had formed between you and mingyu grew wider, and you had no idea how to cross over it.
one year passes after mingyu proposed, and he never even brings up the wedding.
you delete the wedding pinterest board on your phone.
it's been a year since the breakup, and you're driving to meet seungkwan for sunday brunch, when a sudden push from the back jostles you, and you hear the loud crunch of metal.
shit.
you're immediately rushing out of the car to assess the situation. your rear bumper has been completely destroyed, and the owner of the car that bumped into yours is already apologizing frantically, when you realize—
"mingyu?" your voice is a strangled thing as you bring your eyes up to look at the man standing in front of you.
he seems just as shocked as you, his face immediately turning pale and his eyes widening almost comically.
"it's- it's you," the words fall from mingyu's lips, and you feel your eyes fill up with tears embarrassingly quickly. you bite the inside of your cheek to stop yourself from crying in front of your ex, and keep your tone calm and composed as you say, "don't worry about the bumper, i'll take care of it. bye."
you're turning away to get back into the safety of your car to cry your heart out, but mingyu stops you.
"y/n, can we talk? please?" he pleads, and you shut your eyes tightly, not wanting to meet his. you're afraid of what you might do if you look into his eyes again.
"there's nothing to talk about, mingyu," you shake your head. "we- whatever was there between us is over now."
"so we don't have to talk about the fact that you packed your things up, put your ring on the kitchen counter, and left my life? without any explanation?" mingyu presses, and you gather the courage to face him.
you regret your decision to do so, because all you can think about when you look at him is that one day, a year ago, when you decided to leave.
it's a random tuesday morning — or maybe it's thursday, you're not sure. ever since your relationship with mingyu started feeling more like a connection shared by strangers rather than lovers, the days seemed to be bleeding together.
mingyu is all over the apartment, his formal shirt untucked and not fully buttoned, socks mismatched, and his movements rushed. he goes into the bedroom to get a tie, then goes into the closet to get his shoes, goes back into the bedroom because he forgot his watch, and the process continues.
you sit on the couch, scrolling through your emails and not paying attention to mingyu. maybe a year ago, you would have joined in on the chaotic mess, but right now, mingyu's groans of frustration are nothing but annoying to you.
"y/n, have you seen my watch? the new one?" mingyu asks, approaching your figure on the couch.
you simply shrug your shoulders, looking up at him for a moment and shaking your head. "you keep telling me not to touch your stuff, so i wouldn't know."
mingyu bristles at your response. "why do you sound so petty? the only reason i told you that is because you misplaced my memory card!"
"it was empty! it wasn't like you lost any of the photos on it," you bite back. "and it was a mistake, mingyu. i'm human.”
mingyu pinches the bridge of his nose, inhaling deeply to calm himself down. "fine, let's forget about that. could you please just tell me where the watch is?"
"i don't know where it is, mingyu," you repeat, going back to your phone.
"well, would it kill you to get off the fucking couch and help me find it?" mingyu snaps. "you know that i have an important event to attend. why are you being so difficult?"
"maybe i don't want to help!" you retort. "you just use me as some personal assistant who makes you meals, does the laundry and makes sure everything is in perfect condition for you. it's like i'm not your fiancée anymore!"
"you know what, i don't have time for this," mingyu fumes. "you're being unreasonable, and i don't know why-"
"you don't have time for me at all, anymore," you scoff. "it's always events, meetings, shoots. you're going ahead in your career but you're leaving me behind."
"that is so selfish of you!" mingyu lashes out. "do you expect me to drop my career and spend all my time with you?"
"i expect you to at least acknowledge my presence, mingyu!" your voice cracks with the weight of the past year suffocating you. "i've always supported your career. i've always wanted the best for you, but you just discarded me to the side! do you know how pathetic it feels?"
mingyu's expression falters, realization flickering in his eyes. "y/n, i didn't- i never wanted you to feel like that, i-"
"i've had enough of your excuses," you stop him. "i've had enough of this mingyu. just- just go attend your event, okay?"
mingyu gulps, the guilt flooding his body. "let's talk when i get home? please, y/n."
you don't give him an answer, and before mingyu can plead again, he gets a call from his assistant, who informs him that he needs to leave as soon as possible.
"i have to leave now, but i'll come back and we'll sort this out, yeah?" mingyu tells you, having calmed down significantly. "i'll see you later, y/n. i- i love you."
the last three words are like a knife twisting in your gut. you can only watch as mingyu hastily finishes getting ready and leaves the house. the second the door shuts behind him, you go into the bedroom and start packing all your clothes and shoes into suitcases.
you stuff in some other important things, like documents, pictures, jewellery, everything you brought with you when you moved into mingyu's house.
you leave behind the pink fuzzy slippers that had a matching blue pair. you leave behind the ugly paper mache statue you made with him. you leave behind the matching 'his' and 'hers' mugs you both drank coffee from.
you leave behind the engagement ring on the kitchen counter.
you walk out the door in two hours, both your ring finger and heart empty.
you snap back into the present, where mingyu's frame is still towering over you.
"i thought that argument was all the explanation you needed," you mutter indifferently, trying to tamp down the tears that were trying to escape.
"it wasn't, y/n. it just left me confused and-"
"then imagine how i felt," you let out a dry laugh. "imagine how i felt when you came back home from your photography trip and didn't say a word about all the missed calls and unanswered texts. when you never brought up our wedding and kept me waiting for some shitty happy ending i wanted with you. you left me in the dark, like i was nothing but some old childhood toy you shoved away in the attic to collect dust."
"that trip changed a lot of things for me too, y/n,” mingyu shoots back. “i was reaching the peak of my career, and it kept making me question whether i was ready to settle down then. i was scared and confused because i had never felt for someone the way i felt for you, but i also wasn’t sure if us getting married that quickly was going to be a good choice.”
"why didn’t you think about all this before you proposed?" you argue. "and why did you never talk to me about any of this? we would’ve figured out something that worked for the both of us."
"y/n, i-"
the loud honk of a car behind the both of you interrupted mingyu, and you take that as a cue to leave the conversation.
"look, we're past all the excuses now," you look away from mingyu. "what we had is in the past, and we both need to move on."
"i can't," mingyu says, and those two words knock the breath out of your lungs. you turn around to look at him again, hoping to find some ounce of a lie in his words, but the look in his eyes says it all.
he isn't lying.
"i've tried moving on, y/n. i've tried to forget you but it never works. i've tried so hard, but no one is you. i'll never love anyone as much as i love you, and that scares me," mingyu chokes out.
the car is still honking, but you can't seem to move from your spot.
"you'll- you'll move on someday," your voice is shaky and barely sounds convincing to even you. you don't know whether your heart is happy or broken at what mingyu just said.
"i know i won't, because what i feel for you is true love," he says with conviction. "y/n, our relationship may have been brief. we may have taken things too fast and fizzled out, but i know my feelings are real."
"how can you say that? we only hurt each other in the end," you shake your head. "it can't be true love if both of us ended up with broken hearts."
"my heart still hurts every day when i wake up and realize you're not there," mingyu sighs. "i still make two cups of coffee, and one goes down the drain because you're not there. i still call out your name when i can't find my goddamn keys, but you're not there. it still hurts so much, even after all this time has passed.'
"and i know i was the one at fault," mingyu continues. "i haven't stopped beating myself up about how stupid i was to ignore you and your needs like that. i wish i had admitted the truth to you, and i regret not doing that every day. god, y/n, i cry myself to sleep every night thinking about our wedding and how i was the one who went and ruined it all."
the tears finally spill, and by now the car has already turned around to take another route. your chest heaves with how much you're crying, and you realize that you should’ve reached out to mingyu too.
you waited and waited for mingyu to say something, but you never said anything either. you pretended that everything was okay when it really wasn't. maybe if you'd said something-
"stop, i know what you're doing in there," mingyu breaks your train of thought. "you- don't blame yourself. relationships end and hearts break, but that doesn't mean they don't deserve a second chance."
"mingyu, i- i don't know how i can trust you again," you speak, your voice hoarse. "you said it yourself. we- we crashed and burned. we hurt each other with our love, and i can't go through that heartbreak again."
"let me earn it back," mingyu pleads. "let me make up for my mistakes, y/n. i'd die regretting losing you without having a chance to tell you how sorry i am for doing that to you."
there's two voices in you.
one tells you to let down your walls and let mingyu in again.
the other one curls up in your lungs and it tastes like the bitter alcohol you drank almost every night to forget mingyu. it tells you that you're going to get your heart broken again.
a third voice breaks through the noise, and it's mingyu.
"please, y/n. let me make things right," his voice has dropped to a whisper, and the conflict in your mind stops.
"i'll consider it, if you pay to get the rear bumper fixed."
"what if we break up some day?" you ask mingyu when he brings up plans of growing old with you in the countryside of france.
"we've been dating for a year and you're already thinking of breaking up with me?" mingyu gasps, which makes you giggle. "i'm hurt, babe. i'd never do that to you."
"but what if you did? or if i hurt you?" you ask, the question not wanting to leave your mind. "everyone tells us we're going too fast. that we're going to crash. what happens then?"
mingyu exhales deeply before turning to face you. he cups your face with his hands and looks deep into your eyes.
"even if we end up crashing, even if we end up leaving each other, i promise to find you again," he says sincerely. "if it's my fault, i'll apologize till my last breath, till i know that you've forgiven me. and if it's your fault, well — as long as you show up in my life again, i'll forgive you."
"that's not fair to you," you laugh. "you shouldn't let me off the hook that easily."
"to be honest, i would," mingyu disagrees. "because i know that staying away from you would kill me. if you ever decide to come back into my life, i'll welcome you with open arms. i'd rather be hurt with you by my side than die a slow death without you."
"you're so sappy," you roll your eyes. "i hope you know that i won't forgive you that easily."
"i told you, i'd spend all my life making it up to you if i ever hurt you," he vows. "what we have is true love, y/n. it only comes around once. i'll be damned if i ever lose you."
in that moment, you hadn't thought much about mingyu's words. but little did you know, that somewhere down the line, mingyu would really keep his promise to win your trust back.
it's been eight months since mingyu crashed into your life all over again, and this time around, you've really taken things slow.
he's still working on gaining your trust back, which you appreciate, because it assures you that he truly means his apology and that he's here to stay.
this time around, you feel hopeful. maybe, if your heart heals, you'll try again. you love him too much not to at least try once more.
on a tuesday evening, just as you reach home from work, you get a text.
. . .
mingyu (7:15 p.m.) :
you free friday evening?
you (7:37 p.m.) :
yeah i am
why?
mingyu (7:38 p.m.) :
i have an exhibition for my photos on that day
it wouldnt feel right without you there
you (7:50 p.m.) :
i'll be there
mingyu (7:51 p.m.) :
thank you :)
. . .
the exhibition gallery is packed with people as you walk into it on friday evening. you feel a little overdressed in your wine red, knee-length dress amidst a crowd of people wearing sweatshirts and jeans.
still, you walk forward confidently, you find yourself getting captivated by the sheer magnitude of the exhibition.
there's large displays of streets in different cities bathed in the warm light of the moon, birds soaring in the sky, random people going about their daily lives, and so many small, unseen moments that mingyu always had the knack for capturing.
the composition of all the photographs makes you stare at them in awe. mingyu is extremely observant, which allows him to focus on the finer details others would skip over. paired with meticulous editing, the final photographs are nothing short of stunning.
you spend a lot of time with each frame, reading the captions mingyu has penned down for each of them. you're so engrossed in each picture that you don't even realize that the crowd in the gallery has come to a stop in front of one particular frame.
you try your best to crane your neck to catch a glimpse of the photo, but to no avail. finally, when some of the crowd clears out, you move closer, and then the world stops.
it's the picture you tried to throw out but ended up keeping it on your nightstand. it's the picture you had received in a package from mingyu when he was away.
it was the last picture he had taken of you.
tears pool in your eyes rather quickly, and you walk closer to the picture of you displayed on the wall. it's huge in size, bigger than all the photos, as if this is the one mingyu wanted everyone to see. the one mingyu loved the most.
and it's titled — her.
'the last photo of this exhibit is a picture i clicked of my muse. before her, photography never had an end goal for me. all i did was click pictures of whatever i saw. after her, i began looking for pieces of her in every sight i took in. i tried to capture the warmth of her smile, depth of her love, glow of her presence, and the special feeling she stirs in me. everywhere i go, i find a glimpse of her, and every picture i take till my last breath, she will be the inspiration behind it.'
there's the sound of a mic coming to life, and you whirl around to see a tall figure standing on stage.
he's dressed in a pressed black shirt and slacks, the sleeves rolled up, hair parted to perfection, and posture confident.
but only you can find a glimpse of fear in his eyes.
it melts away when they meet yours.
"good evening everyone, my name is kim mingyu, and i would like to thank all of you for attending my exhibition," he speaks into the mic, and the crowd bursts into loud applause.
"as you all know, photography is not only my career, but my passion. it's what i live for. last year, however, was a rough patch for me. i lost all interest in photography. i hadn't touched my camera in months. it was like the colors of the world had faded away," his voice, although confident, sounds a bit shaky. his eyes are still locked onto yours, almost as if every word’s meant only for you.
"people told me that it was normal to feel that way. maybe it was burnout, or maybe the reality that photography was just a hobby. but, only i knew the real reason all along. all artists have a muse, without which it becomes difficult to breathe life into their art. i too have a muse. she is the reason i'm here today and able to show you what i've done."
"last year, i went into a slump because she left my life. it was my fault; i was too caught up in the lens of my camera to notice that i was hurting her," mingyu's voice is strained and raspy, and you know that tone all too well. sure enough, his eyes are glassy with unshed tears, but he powers on.
"for that one year without her, i lost all my drive and creativity. i couldn't look for the details in nature because my vision felt blurry. it felt like she had taken a part of me with her when she left. by some stroke of luck, i found her again. and this may sound cliche, but, the second i saw her, it felt like the world existed in technicolor again."
"she's here tonight, even though i don't deserve it, even after everything i put her through, and this time, i want to show her that i've changed. that i don't care about all these pictures, not if i don't see her in them. that one day, if she'll ever forgive me, if she'll ever give me another chance, i won't let her down."
you're sure that your makeup is ruined by how much you're crying, and there's a few tears streaming down mingyu's face too. the crowd is muttering sadly, wondering who the girl could be, but no one in that room will ever know that it's you.
"my muse, this exhibition is my whole heart, and tonight, i give it to you. you can take your time to accept it, i'd wait a lifetime for you anyway. and to everyone who attended, thank you once again."
as mingyu steps off the stage, you can only hope he doesn’t notice you slipping out of the gallery and into the cold night.
when you hear the door to the terrace you snuck into open, you think that it’s a security guard telling you the location is off-limits.
you turn around to apologize, but your breath catches in your throat when you see mingyu standing there, tear tracks similar to yours glistening under the pale moonlight.
“mingyu, i-”
“i thought you left,” he chokes out, and your heart squeezes uncomfortably. “you were there the entire time i was speaking, but then you were gone, and i thought that it was done for good. i thought it was the last time i’d see you, and i felt so scared.”
you can see how his chest is heaving, and his shoulders are lined with tension. there’s this urge in you to close the gap between you two so that you can take that stress away.
“i’m sorry, i should’ve told you before i left,” you gulp nervously. “i just- i needed some air.”
“i’m sorry too, for springing all that on you,” mingyu says. “i just had to tell you everything, even if you wouldn’t forgive me at the end of it all.”
“did you mean everything you said tonight?” your voice is quiet, almost as if you're hoping mingyu won't hear you and your words will disappear into the air.
“of course i did,” mingyu replies without skipping a beat. “everything i did before you and after you has no meaning, because you weren't there. our love was what inspired me the most. it's the truth, y/n.”
you take a moment to process his words, letting the weight of them fully land on you. seeing you go silent, mingyu steps forward, his eyes searching yours.
“if i- if i asked for you to forgive me, for you to give me a second chance, would you say yes?”
you already know the answer, but you bite your tongue to stop yourself from blurting it out. you pretend to think about it, as if mingyu can't read your expression.
“i never stopped loving you,” is what you say. “even when we weren't talking for a whole year after the photography trip. even after we broke up. even now, after you came back into my life. i've never stopped loving you, mingyu, but you're still the person who broke my heart.”
you can sense mingyu about to apologize again, so you bring your hand up to stop him.
“you're the one who broke my heart, but you're also the one my heart wants. the only one,” letting these words out makes the burden on your shoulders feel lighter, but the tension of the moment still remains heavy. “and that's what scares me. because even if you break my heart again, i'll still love you. i don't think i know how not to.”
“i won't, y/n,” mingyu shakes his head. “i won't make that mistake again. i just want to earn your trust again and show you that i'll be better to you. we can take it slow and figure things out, but-”
“fuck taking things slow,” you cut him off. at some point during the whole conversation, your bodies have gravitated towards each other, and mingyu is close enough for you to reach out and cover his mouth with a hand.
“it doesn't matter if we go slow or fast, i just want you,” you tell him, looking into his eyes so he knows that you're speaking the truth. “i want us to work out this time.”
mingyu's eyes widen with surprise, and he gingerly lifts your hand off his mouth.
“do you really mean that?” his voice trembling.
“i forgave you a long time ago, mingyu,” you let out a laugh, eyes welling up with tears. “i forgave you when you paid for wrecking my rear bumper. again. i just needed time to know that this was real. that we wouldn't crash and burn again. and tonight really sealed it for me. i could see it in your pictures, mingyu. i could see how much love you look at the world with. back then, i thought that your love for photography was more than what you felt for me, but now i know that it's not true.”
“my love for you is what makes me love capturing the world in my lens,” mingyu completes. “i'm sorry i had made you feel otherwise.”
“we're done with the apologies now,” you shake your head. “let's leave the past in the past and start afresh. does that sound good?”
“i guess i'll have to crash your car one more time, then,” mingyu jokes, and you laugh. this time it's a loud, genuine sound; one mingyu had missed hearing. one you had missed hearing.
“maybe let's find a less destructive way?” you giggle, but it quickly turns into a gasp when mingyu cups your face with his hands.
“as long as it's with you, i don't mind anything,” mingyu says, and then you see it.
a look of sincerity and hope flashing across his face. you know it for sure, because you feel the exact same way.
mingyu's eyes flick down to look at your lips, still hesitating to make a move.
“just kiss me already,” you sigh, and mingyu doesn't waste another second. with one swift movement, he's swooping you in for a kiss. a kiss so soft, yet so deep, it makes you feel like you're floating amongst the stars in the night sky looking down at love blossoming again.
when mingyu pulls away, you're both breathless for a few minutes, the reality of the moment sinking in.
the moment doesn't need any more words or touches. you can see everything you need to know in his eyes, and you hope he can read yours too.
its unmistakable; the glimpse of love that you see in him.
you feel yourself falling all over again, hurtling towards an end that may catch you by surprise, but this time it doesn't feel daunting.
not when you know that mingyu will be there to catch you.

MY SHAYLA
hoshi + work song by hozier? :)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
when i was kissing on my baby and she put her love down soft and sweet in the low lamp light i was free
wc <1k. warnings FLUFF!!!, suggestive (they make out at the end. sorry. i’m normal), lots of kissing, hella praise (someone needs to tell soonyoung he’s doing good RIGHT NOW!!). jay’s musings i am so weak for soft sy + this song makes me go ABSOLUTELY FERAL .°(ಗдಗ。)°. you are so right anon. speak ur truth
Tumblr media
The lighting in the room is dim, cozy. It’s well into the morning, sunlight streaming faintly through the curtained windows and finding home atop your bedsheets.
You press a long, soft kiss to Soonyoung’s bare shoulder. He’s been murmuring in his sleep for quite awhile now, shifting around like he’s trying to escape some paranormal entity unbeknownst to you. Your fingers inch under the covers and find his.
“Love,” you hum into his skin.
The man shivers at your touch, jolting awake with a gasp. His hair sticks up in all kinds of directions, unkempt from sleep, and you smooth a hand through it. Soonyoung leans into your fingers with an achingly gentle sigh.
“Nightmare again?” you tilt your head in a question.
He nods, eyes fluttering shut when you run a thumb across his cheek. You trace the knot in his eyebrows with your gaze, all the way down to the slope of his collarbone, exposed and vulnerable.
“I can’t remember much of it now,” Soonyoung confesses. “But it felt like I had this big weight on my shoulders—metaphorically, that is. There was so much guilt it was overwhelming. Like I couldn’t breathe, almost. I was in front of you, and you were looking at me, waiting for me to speak, and… I remember feeling terrified. Of what you would think of me if I told you about what I did.”
While you’re listening, your thumb on his cheek never pauses in its soft, methodical swipes along his skin. The barren sunlight leaves him dappled in a honeying glow.
Your heartbeat pounds loud in your ears, your mind taking action to bring his attention to just how much you yearn for him through a steady rhythm of love—if for nothing else but to soothe his worries.
To reiterate your thoughts, you pull him in, letting your arms lay loose around his neck. Your foreheads rest against the other’s.
“Soonyoung,” you whisper, lips brushing his.
His eyes flicker between your soft, melting gaze and the way your mouth curls to enunciate his name. His own lips are parted, waiting, and you’re eager to give, dipping in to steal a kiss.
“You could never,” you kiss him again and he chases your lips. “Never, ever ever, even try to get me to hate you.”
“You don’t know what I’ve done,” Soonyoung says brokenly. “How could you say that?”
Another kiss—one that’s unhurried, searing with want. Your lips travel to the corner of his mouth and down to his jawline. He whimpers at your nibbling.
“You act as if we are made to be perfect,” is your hushed reply, pressing an open-mouth kiss to underside of his jaw. “You’re talking as if being loved and being perfect are synonyms. As if they mean the same thing.”
“In reality, they simply coexist together. Their relationship is more of a simultaneous thing; you are loved, and at the same time, you are perfect just the way you are. Did you know, I love you? I love you, in your entirety—all your sins, all your fears. I love you because they make you, you. Your hatred, your pain, your burdens—are they not just feelings that coexist with the love inside of you? I love you because you are whole and filled with emotions. I love you because you are love.”
There’s a pause, and you draw your face back up to his level again. Soonyoung is staring at you, eyes glassy and lips wobbling.
You’re wondering if you’ve gone too far with your nonsensical ramblings when he kisses you, and all air is knocked out of your lungs.
“Thank you,” he sobs, and you taste the saltiness of his tears as his lips press against yours, frantic, needy.
His hands are in a frenzy, gripping your bare skin like you’ll disappear at any moment. You whine at his touch, passion overtaking you as your fingers wrap themselves in his locks of hair. The man moans when you tug, and the noise sounds so melodic it has you tearing up yourself.
“Thank you, thank you, thank you,” Soonyoung murmurs; you can’t tell what tears belong to who anymore, but you don’t think it matters when you’re this tangled up in each other.
“You are love, too. My love. You are my freedom—my life, my eternity. Thank you.”

like a python 🧊 jihoon x reader.
Tumblr media
jihoon doesn’t know how many years of pining he has left in him.
★ rockstar!jihoon x reader. ★ word count: 2.5k ★ genre/warnings: alternate universe: non-idol. jihoon-centric, childhood friends, yearning... so much yearning, young k makes a cameo, jihoon is a bit lame (affectionately), cussing/swearing. mentions of alcohol, food. ★ footnotes: got7 dropped winter heptagon and it's all i can think about. wrote this in one sitting as a show of gratitude to @chugging-antiseptic-dye for introducing me to these boys. haven't done a song fic in a hot minute, but for lee jihoon and got7? anything. shoutout to igot7_MarKP on twitter for the english translation of the lyrics.
🎧 now playing: python by got7 — i know i'm an icon, watch me with the lights on; but she got a hold on me like a python.
Tumblr media
▸ MUSIC IS HOW I'VE BEEN VENTING NOW... OVERSEAS, I'M SELLING OUT.
It’s pretty surreal to Jihoon, being in a room with some of the biggest names in rock.
In the past hour alone, he’s met Alex Turner, Dave Grohl, and— holy shit, is that Hayley Williams? Jihoon is getting dizzy, and it’s not only because of all the secondhand smoke he’s inhaled since he got to the Rolling Stones afterparty.
The best of the best. That’s what the invitation had boasted. It was the scene’s most coveted event, and Jihoon somehow made it to the guest list.
Unbidden, your voice nags from somewhere in the back of his mind. You’re the best, Jihoon-ah.
He shakes his head, like he’s physically trying to get away from the thought of you. This had been happening a lot more as of late. Fleeting moments wherein he’d imagine how you would react, what you’d say.
But Jihoon always catches himself. He snaps himself out of it and goes back to recording, goes back to performing.
God, he needs to get it together. He’s starting to regret saying ‘no’ to the cigarette Ely Buendia was offering him earlier.
(In Jihoon’s defense, he didn’t smoke often. He didn’t want to fuck up his vocal chords. He had a one-cigarette-a-year rule, and he wasn’t about to use it now. It was only January; who knew what else the year would throw him?)
Jihoon is contemplating some other vice— maybe he can go grab another beer— when he feels a tap on his shoulder. At the sight of who came up to him, Jihoon immediately folds into a bow.
“There’s no need for that,” Younghyun says, equal parts amused and embarrassed. “We’re all the same here, yeah?”
Jihoon pulls himself to his full height. “Not… really,” he says lamely, and then he immediately launches into mumbled apologies when he realizes how he might have sounded.
It wasn’t that Jihoon thought he was better than his peers. Hell, he knew that he was the least important person in the room. That’s what he meant; they were not all the same, because Jihoon still had a long ways to go.
Especially when compared to rock icon Young K, who is— gracefully— taking Jihoon’s awkwardness in stride.
“You’re holding up a lot better than me,” Younghyun muses. “At my first afterparty, I threw up on Rupam Islam.”
“No.”
“Yes, unfortunately. He was very nice about it, though.”
Jihoon lets out a stutter of a laugh. He’s never been a fan of small talk, but he clings to it now like a lifeline. “Does it get easier?” he asks.
Younghyun’s eyebrows raise. “Throwing up on rockstars?”
“No, no–”
“I was kidding,” Younghyun says in between chuckles. His expression is a little more pensive when he goes on, “I can’t say for sure that it gets easier, but you learn to deal with it.”
You learn to deal with it. Jihoon can almost laugh at just how accurate that is. It seems applicable to every aspect of his life— including missing you.
Jihoon winces. Younghyun notices.
The older man doesn’t comment on it, probably thinks it’s something else entirely. Younghyun doesn’t flinch away, either, when Jihoon nervously says, “Can I ask you another question?”
“Ask away,” says Younghyun. “I’ve got nothing better to do.”
What is Jihoon doing? He doesn’t know either, but it’s either this or fight off the urge to run through a pack of Marlboros. “How do you cope,” he starts slowly, “with… feelings?”
A beat. Crap. Jihoon realizes he definitely could have phrased that better, because Younghyun is now looking at him with an expression of mild confusion.
Jihoon backtracks. “You— we— go through a lot in this field of work. Like, a lot. And you— fuck, fine, I’m— grateful for it, really, I swear. But there’s just… so much other things, too, aside from the gratitude. How do you cope with those?”
Jihoon knows he probably looks and sounds like a trainwreck in his bid to be deliberately vague. By some miracle, Younghyun at least seems to understand what Jihoon is trying to say.
Younghyun’s lip quirks to one side as he thinks of his response. The silence stretches uncomfortably long, but then he gives an answer that’s the last thing Jihoon could have expected.
“I write,” Younghyun says.
Jihoon blinks once. Then twice.
“You write,” he repeats, and the former nods.
“It’s all in my discography. The anger, the heartbreak, the love.” Younghyun raises his shoulders in a shrug. “I’ve written nearly 200 songs, and all of them are just— that. Questions. Answers to questions. Feelings and stories.”
It’s so simple, so obvious. It’s like a glaring traffic sign, like something that every musician should know and do.
Put it in a song. Perform it for thousands and leave the muse none the wiser. Profit. Lather, rinse, repeat.
Jihoon had done it a fair amount of times, but never had he considered putting you to pen and paper. The prospect of it makes something in his chest thrum.
“I—” He clears his throat. “I think I have to go, sunbaenim. It was nice seeing you.”
A hint of humor glints in Younghyun’s eye, like he’s somewhat aware of the fact he’s witnessing something unravel. “‘Younghyun’ is fine,” he chirps. “And it was nice seeing you, too, Jihoon. Take care of yourself, yeah?”
The words— take care of yourself— are supposed to be a platitude. To Jihoon, it feels like a tall ask.
▸ I'M TOURING THE WORLD BUT I'M MISSING THE ONE WHO HELD IT DOWN.
Jihoon is exhausted.
As much as he wants to say that he’s never been this tired in his life, it’d probably be a lie. He’d make the claim, hit the road, then end up crashing out saying the same damn thing. He’s seen this film before; he knows how it ends.
He falls back on his hotel bed after his shower. A low groan escapes him, and he sends up a silent prayer to all the higher powers there are. Thank you for sheets with a 300-500 thread count. Thank you for air-conditioning. Thank you for warm showers and Listerine.
Despite his fatigue, Jihoon can’t just go to sleep. Post-show adrenaline always took a couple of hours to wear off.
He briefly contemplates his options. Write a lyric or two? Watch a shitty Netflix movie? Stare out the hotel window until his eyes can’t stay open anymore?
None of the above, it seems, as he reaches for his phone.
Jihoon has never been active on SNS; he just couldn’t bring himself to care about things like TikTok trends or Twitter ‘beef’. It’s a constant thorn in his PR team’s side. There is one thing that he bothers to check, though, and God forbid he deny himself the simple pleasure of some good ol’ fashioned pining.
He’s been on your Instagram page enough times that it’s the first thing that shows when he goes to the search bar. It’s the only thing that shows, really, which gives some pretty good sense of where his head is at.
Your profile loads. There’s no new post, no recent story. Jihoon is both disappointed and relieved.
No news is good news, he thinks to himself as he leisurely scrolls through the photos he’s already seen a dozen times before. You, feeding sidewalk cats. You, sipping tea at a cafe. You, in all the places that were once Jihoon’s, too. The beaches, the hiking trails, the restaurant in your shared neighborhood.
Jihoon opens that particular post. Even though he’s watched your life in squares for the better half of the past three years, this is the one photo that always has him feeling a pang of… something.
Because Jihoon can imagine it— being at that restaurant with you. The two of you had discovered it together, had pooled your measly school allowances to afford the bokguk and ganjang gejang.
He imagines being there with this older version of you, being the one snapping the picture that’d find a spot on your feed. He can see it so clearly in his mind’s eye that if he really, really tries, it begins to look more like a memory than a daydream.
But he’s not in Busan, not even in Korea. He’s in the United States instead, where he has ten stops before heading to Canada and Europe.
Sold-out stadiums. Thousands upon thousands of adoring fans.
All the food that he could possibly want, and yet it’s pufferfish soup and soy sauce crabs that he’s looking for.
Every person that he could possibly have, and yet. And yet.
Jihoon huffs out a frustrated exhale. He’s tired, which he swears makes him delusional.
He casts his phone aside, blissfully ignorant to the way his finger double taps his screen as he does.
Halfway across the world, your phone pings
woozi_universefactory ✓ liked your post.
▸ I'VE BEEN RUNNING BACKWARDS, RUNNING BACKWARDS LIKE A MARATHON.
The push notification glaring up at Jihoon looks a lot like a bomb that’s about to explode.
Jihoon feels like it’s a bomb, because he refuses to believe that after over a year of absolutely nothing, you’ve messaged first. You’ve messaged first.
He double, triple checks his calendar. It’s neither of your birthdays. It’s not a holiday, either. Is it Chuseok? No— that doesn’t make sense.
“For fuck’s sake,” he chides himself under his breath. It’s a text. Nothing more, nothing less.
Jihoon opens the notification.
And then his heart just.
Stops.
You’d sent two messages— the first, being the post that had him spiraling last night. It’s the proceeding message that has Jihoon hoping the ground will swallow him whole.
Stalking me, Jihoon-ah?
Holy shit.
Jihoon types out at least three different messages, from Are you a fly on my wall to Is there a new Instagram feature I don’t know about to What happened to “hello, how are you”?
In the end, he only sends back a single question mark. When he opens the offending post, he immediately sees his transgression.
Jihoon hadn’t liked the photo before last night. He didn’t like much posts to begin with. How— When—
His phone pings. He’s never been so thankful that he mostly opts to get room service for breakfast, because the squeak that he lets out is definitely not very rockstar-like. Jihoon fumbles, and he ends up opening your DM before he can psych himself up for it.
LOL. Playing dumb doesn’t suit you, you say.
Damn you and your ability to render him speechless. Jihoon wonders if he can get away with not responding, with getting back to you a couple of days later and blaming his work.
Except.
Jihoon’s fingers slowly move across his screen.
It was a good post, he says.
It was a post from a year ago, you answer.
So? He throws in an emoji of a man shrugging for good measure. Jihoon never uses emojis, but he can make some exceptions.
Your respond, So, stalking. You were stalking me.
Jihoon knows he’s digging a hole for himself, knows he’s going to stay up several nights thinking of just how stupid he is. If he were a stronger man, he’d pull the plug on this conversation and that’d be it. You wouldn’t bug him. He would maybe write a song about this moment. The world would go on.
But he can hear you.
In the messages, in the words on his screen. He can hear your voice, the way you’d smile or laugh or tease. How you’d say his name in that sing-song tone he once pretended to hate.
He hears you in your messages, and he’ll live with the secondhand shame if it means that he gets to keep on listening.
Not stalking, he shoots back. Just checking in.
Ah, you say. Because you missed me?~
Despite himself, he scoffs. You’ve always been so shameless. It didn’t matter to you that he was WOOZI the rockstar; to you, he would always be Jihoon who lived three houses down.
As if, he says to your teasing.
You don’t respond anymore. You don’t even read the message, because Jihoon doesn’t see the little ‘Seen’ under his last message.
He waits for it for a minute. Then five minutes. Then seven minutes. He stops checking at the thirteen-minute mark, because he likes to believe he’s no longer a high schooler with a raging crush on the girl next door.
He’s a grown man. He’s WOOZI, for Christ’s sake.
He can’t keep coming back to you.
▸ I GAVE YOU MY TIME WHEN I DIDN'T HAVE MUCH; ALL OF MY FEELINGS, SWEPT UNDER THE RUG.
Except he does.
WOOZI may not want to. WOOZI may be the bassist writing songs about the past in hopes of leaving things in the past, but Jihoon is a different story.
Jihoon texts you the moment he lands in Gimhae International Airport. Jihoon stands outside your front door— definitely jetlagged, probably in need of a shower— with his luggage in one hand and his phone in the other.
Jihoon acts like it’s the world’s biggest inconvenience when he tells you, “Come on, then.”
The two of you get the crabs and soup. He refuses to talk about his time away; he contents himself with listening, like he always does, and you fill the silence with babble. Your desk job, your parents’ nagging, your hobbies and side hustles.
“Probably not as interesting as your life,” you joke after a particularly long-winded anecdote about a delivery rider who got your address wrong.
Jihoon neither confirms nor denies the statement. He only raises one eyebrow and gives you a wordless gesture with his hand. Go on anyway, he’s saying, and you take the cue.
The meal ends. Jihoon invites you for coffee. Then ice cream. Then a walk.
“This is very suspicious.”
Jihoon can’t help it; a snort of laughter escapes him at your words. “Can’t a guy take a friend out to lunch?” he asks humorlessly.
“And dinner,” you note.
“And dinner, yes.”
“And dessert.”
“And dessert.”
The two of you are taking the long way home. There’s something to be said about how Jihoon drags his feet, about how you walk like you’re not on borrowed time. Even your conversation moves like you’re beating around the bush.
There is an elephant in the room and Jihoon is done pretending that it’s not there. That it hasn’t been there since the day you two met in primary school, since the first time he held your hand as a teenager, since he became a musician and every song he performed became about you.
Jihoon doesn’t know how many years of pining he has left in him.
“Are you dying?”
Your blasé question draws a bark of laughter from him. “Jesus, no,” he says. “Do I have to be dying to want to see you?”
You don’t answer right away. Jihoon once again has that feeling that he’s said something wrong, something loaded, but you save him from overthinking when you respond with, “You wanted to see me?”
There it is. That teasing tone, that hint of a smile.
You bump your shoulder against his. “You missed me, Jihoon-ah. Admit it.”
And Jihoon is done, Jihoon is tired, Jihoon is still yours after all this time.
“Yeah,” he finally, finally says. “I missed you.”

one; the author
The flash of the camera goes off and you’re almost sure your eyes were closed. The teenage girl next to you smiles brightly and waves at you once more before rushing off to go over to her mother. You lightly smile back and look over to your right where Minghao is giving you a thumbs up. Apparently, so you interpret his gesture, you’re holding up quite well for someone who just caught her fiancée cheating two weeks ago.
You’re aware that you could have canceled the book signing today. No one would have been mad. But even though your heart is shattered to a million pieces and you don’t think you’ll ever heal from this hurt - you still need to earn money and make those who give you that money happy. Just sucks that the person you build this with is somewhere on the Bahamas with your biggest rival on the romance book market. Or, well, as your publisher says: your bestest friend on the romance book market. Since you’re both making money, of course. You can’t count the times you and her have been sent to events together, not saying a word to each other on the way there and playing happy family the second you are in front of the cameras.
Her books weren’t even good! Boring and predictable if anyone asked you. Your ex had always agreed with you, even if he was her agent as well as yours. But Jaehyun was slick - he told her the same about your books.
“Hi, oh my god, I love your books so much! I can’t wait for the next one!” It’s a boy with the brightest and whitest smile you have ever seen and for a second you can forget your sadness.
“Thank you so much. What name do you want me to sign?”
Tumblr media
The book signing ends about half an hour later. You’re in the car with Minghao who’s typing something on his phone as he sits in the backseat with you.
“You did great, you know.” He says, not looking up. His words make your stomach turn uncomfortably even though you know he means well.
“Thanks,” is your mumbled response, your head slowly turning to look out of the window. Minghao sets down his phone, realizing his words didn’t come out the way he wanted them to. He sighs.
“Best friend dearest,” he starts, “you know what I meant. Considering you have been in your room with no lights on and Adele on repeat for the last few months - you did exceptionally well socializing with people you don’t know.”
“It’s my job after all, isn’t it?”
“No, your job is writing brilliant books, Y/N. This is just a bonus. Your books would sell wonderfully even without you doing this.”
Three months ago this would have made your chest fill with pride. You’d be beaming and agreeing with Minghao, content with your life and what you had made it to be. But now, it’s different.
Now, all you feel is ache in your chest. No sense of pride, no smile in sight. No contentment with how your life is going. Joy has been missing in your palette of feelings for a long time.
The city lights are what keep you awake. Exhaustion and the feeling of sadness that you have become so used to are close to make you falter, to make you want to go home and put those Adele songs right back on repeat. It’s not fair, you think. Not fair that your life was ruined this way and you can’t get back up. That all you’re able to do is live because you have to, not because you want to. And the closer July 17th comes - the more you feel yourself falling deeper into a hole.
It’s hard to believe that three months ago you were a completely different person. A person who loved to laugh, who had fun game nights with her friends, cooked every day, went for runs in the morning, planned a wedding. You were a person who loved to love. All of this was accompanied by the person you had been sure you’d spend the rest of your life with: Jaehyun. He was tall, handsome, kind. You had met him through work - he had been assigned your agent when you switched publishers. He was your muse. Helped you with your books, made the sales sky rocket with the way he marketed you.
For five years he was your everything. In some ways (ways you loathed) he still is. Your whole life revolved around him. Wherever you went - he did too. Whenever you fell - he was there to catch you. Nothing in the world could have ever prepared you for what was going to happen. But then again, when is someone ever prepared to be cheated on by the person they trusted the most in their life?
To say it was a shock would be an understatement. Accidentally finding the messages he sent to her on his iPad. Confronting him and seeing his face fall, his expressions change into something you had never thought possible. He looked caught. Mainly because he was. Also because he never thought the truth would come to light. You had been the only one left in the dark. Everyone at the publishing house knew what he was doing. He and her.
It wasn’t fair, you knew that, but in the beginning you couldn’t handle being mad at Jaehyun. Instead you focused all your anger on her, all the hurt you felt. It wasn’t like you had particularly liked her before - she was your rival, the person everyone always compared you to. She was younger than you, didn’t have as much experience - but she was more successful. At least to an extent. Her books regularly went viral on ‘booktok’, mainly because she wrote them like she worked in a factory. Every couple of months there’d be a new one - and people ate it up. You, on the other hand, liked to take your time, liked to write stories with captivating characters, with characters people could relate to - fall in love with.
Suddenly your biggest rival became the person you hated and wanted to be like the most in the world. To be her would mean to have him. Him, who you still love so much, who still means everything.
It is a little different now. 100 days later and you feel like you don’t love him as much anymore. Yes, it still hurts like hell and, yes, you want to stay home most of the days. But you don’t miss him as much as you used to.
“Do you want to grab a drink?” Minghao asks now even though he already knows the answer. Gosh, you wish you could give him a yes. A smile and a yes. Instead, you only present him with the first, stretching out your hand and reaching for his.
“I need to get home, Hao. Today has been a lot.”
Minghao nods slowly, a sad smile on his pretty lips. He understands, he really does. But he also misses his happy best friend. Misses the way your eyes crinkle when you smile wholeheartedly , misses the sound of you honest laugh. No matter how many time will pass, he doesn’t think he could ever forgive Jaehyun for what he’s done to you.
Tumblr media
Fighting with a french man on the phone at the crack of dawn surely had not been on your agenda for today.
“I’m sorry, miss, but the cancellation period ended two weeks ago, there is nothing we can do.”
It’s too early and you are too tired. He is probably too by now, considering he has been saying this sentence at least five times in the past seven minutes. You pull a hand through your hair and let it drop back onto the mattress after.
“My wedding isn’t happening anymore, and you really won’t let me cancel the honeymoon suite?” Usually, you’d never snap at anyone over the phone - especially custom service personnel, but this is different. What he’s implying means you won’t get any money back from one of the most expensive purchases you’ve made. Worst thing about this: you paid for this yourself. Jaehyun had paid the location - which of course could still be canceled. But the freaking hotel stay in Paris of course was set in stone!
“I am very sorry, miss. I wish there was more that I could do. Perhaps you can take the trip yourself and enjoy our beautiful honeymoon sui-“
You hang up on him. It’s not polite, you’re aware. But just the thought of being alone in the suite you were supposed to enjoy with your freshly baked husband… no, absolutely not. Then, fine, you’d have to live with having spent thousands of dollars on a hotel suite you wouldn’t be able to use.
As if life isn’t horrible enough already.
When you sit at brunch later that day with Minghao and your mutual friend Mingyu, they both stare at you like you’ve just told them you decided to get Jaehyun’s face tattooed on your thigh.
“Are you kidding me? You basically get to have a Paris vacation for free for yourself!” Mingyu says, the glass of mimosa he is holding in his hand is almost spilling with the way he moves his arm. You scoff.
“What do you mean “free”? I literally paid for it months ago!”
“Okay, and did you already make that money back?” Mingyu continues and raises his brow. You stay silent for a moment.
The restaurant Minghao chose is filled with people enjoying the vegan food made from scratch. Your own very delicious avocado toast with a side of fresh fruit and soy-yogurt is laying in front of you, waiting to be eaten. The mimosa Minghao had ordered for you remains untouched.
“She has.” Hao decides to answer for you as he sips from his mug of matcha. You shoot him a glare.
“So what! I’m not going to go to Paris by myself when this was supposed to be my honeymoon!” You try to stay quiet, looking from Minghao to Mingyu and back. Judging by their faces, they don’t seem to understand the big deal.
You envy them. God, how much you wish you could just do it. Go on that already paid for vacation by yourself, not give a single damn about Jaehyun and his new girlfriend. Your heart sinks. Just thinking these words is making you feel like crawling back into bed.
Minghao groans and puts his mug back on the table.
“Y/N,” he starts and his voice sounds more serious than you’ve ever heard him talk before - even Mingyu seems startled, “I get it, okay? I get that he hurt you, that he made you believe in something that was never going to work. He is an asshole, if not the biggest asshole walking freely on this earth. But you’re young! You’re young and you deserve better than this! Keeping to yourself, barely leaving your apartment - your bed, honey, it’s not good for you. I understand that you want to stay away, that the world is a fucking scary place without the person you thought was your person right there next to you,” he grabs your hand over the table, “but do you know what all of this means? That your person is still out there! That you can still find them! And what better place to start than Paris, the literal city of love!”
He means well. Just like the other night after the book signing. He means well and he wants just what’s best for you. No one wants you to feel better as much as he does. Then why does it make you so mad that he is asking this of you? That he is calling you out this way?
You pull your hand away from his and grab your purse from the free chair next to yours. Both men gawk at you, startled.
“Y/N-,” Mingyu tries, but you raise your hand to interrupt him.
“You get it, Hao? Really? Has your significant other of five years also cheated on you with your biggest rival? Did you also have to cancel a wedding you put hours and hours of work and money into? Because I don’t remember this happening to you! So, I would really appreciate it if you gave me the time I need to grieve this relationship and decide for myself when I am ready to get out again!”
Without giving them another look, you storm out of the restaurant. Everything around you is a blurr and you only notice that you’re crying when you reach your car. Cursing to yourself, you move to open your car, tears dripping from your cheeks down onto your shirt. God, what a pathetic little woman. Crying in your car after yelling at your best friends for what? For caring? For only meaning to help?
It takes a while before you manage to start the engine and get on the road to drive home. The radio is silent and for a second you wished you could turn off your brain the same way. Just one switch and all thoughts gone. All the self doubts and the hurt, all the thoughts of what-if and the wish to travel back in time and never have you take his iPad.
You stop at a red light and wipe away some more tears. You don’t dare to look into the mirror and check your make-up.
Never finding the iPad, you circle back, if you had never found it, you wouldn’t be in this situation. No, you’d most likely still be in a relationship with a man that cheated on you. That didn’t love you half as much as he claimed, that didn’t deserve the time and care you’d given him.
When the light turns green, you continue your way, your thoughts still roaming around the what if. And while your heart yearns for him back, for what you believed you had - your head knows it’s better this way. Jaehyun isn’t the one for you, as much as you would have loved him to be, Minghao is right. It’s just that the thought of starting over with someone new makes you cringe, makes fear rise within you. Someone new to give your heart to and hope they don’t break it the way Jae had.
Once you’re on the highway you think back about the time you had decided to travel to Paris for your honeymoon. It had been your idea, your wish. Your first ever book, even if it never made it onto a bestseller list or into the mouths of the best romance critics - it was set in Paris. The city of live, the city you decided would become your favorite even though you had never been. Spending two weeks there with the love of your life after becoming his forever, seriously, nothing had ever sounded as wonderful as that.
Minghao’s words ring in your ear. Your person is still out there, he said. And that Paris, as the city of love, would be the perfect place to go look for them. Your knuckles turn white around the steering wheel. You never wanted to spend time in Paris with anyone but Jaehyun.
Or maybe, you think as you take the exit leading to your neighborhood, the only Person you need to spend time with in Paris is yourself.

two; the lost soul
He never should have listened to Jeonghan. No one should ever listen to Jeonghan. The cab driver is speaking in quick french that Jihoon knows he wouldn’t understand even if he spelled out every word for him. Then again, he isn’t even sure the driver is talking to him or just about him. Jihoon can’t really blame him. After all, he is the stupid American with the stupid big guitar case and a backpack almost bigger than himself.
The backseat is hot and Jihoon’s sunglasses do little to keep the sun from blinding him.
Paris in the summer sounded better on paper than it does actually experiencing it. It’s nothing compared to the summer in Arizona, where Jihoon grew up, but having lived in Vermont for a while now, he wasn’t used to the burning hot, scorching sun that threatened to give him the sunburn of his life if he didn’t re-apply his sunscreen every few hours.
Tara had always laughed at him and his easily burned skin. She never burned, no, she got a tan right away, looking beautiful in the rays of sunshine dazzling on her skin like they belonged there.
Right now, he misses her more than he has in a while. When he passes the beautiful architecture of his first love’s favorite city, he smiles even with the sun shining directly into his eyes.
In all seriousness, Jihoon doesn’t know why he is here. It feels wrong to be here without her, but it also felt like he had to take the invitation from his friend. She would have never forgiven him, if he let this opportunity fly. Visit the city of love, the city she had always dreamt about, he knows as wrong as it feels, it’s the right thing to do.
A few minutes later, the cab stops in front of an old looking building. Without saying anything, the driver takes Jihoon’s Euros and drives off after heaving Jihoon’s suitcase out of his trunk.
Jihoon looks after the car, his dark hair falling into his forehead. Once the cab takes the next corner, he looks at the building, something stirring in his stomach. This… doesn’t look like the pictures on AirBnb at all. Quickly, he fishes his phone out of his pocket, happy he booked the data package at the airport back home. Opening his app, he feels like he’s about to throw up his airplane food.
It’s not there. The apartment is gone from the app, not newly put in under a different name, not just gone because of a glitch. It’s like it never existed. Jihoon curses, moving his fingers over his screen, calling the customer service only to be met with a french speaking automatic voice that doesn’t help him in the slightest.
Hanging up again, he stares at his phone for a few seconds. He shouldn’t have come. It feels too much like a sign. Maybe he should try changing his flight to this evening, maybe he should try to run after that cab and-
The phone in his hands rings and he quickly picks up.
“Hello?”
“Jihoonie!” It’s Jeonghan, the only reason he is in Paris in the first place, “did you make it to the city of love?”
“Yeah, and I wish I didn’t,” Jihoon mumbles in response, brushing his hair out of his face.
“Why? What happened?” Jeonghan does sound concerned, which might be a first.
“My Airbnb doesn’t exist.”
Silence. Jihoon just knows his friend is trying his hardest not to laugh. Oh, to be Yoon Jeonghann and always get entertained by his friends’ miseries.
“Jeonghan, this isn’t funny, okay? I’m about to call another cab and get my ass back home.”
“No! No, you can’t go home! You’re here and I’m going to make sure these will be two of the most amazing weeks of your life, alright? Look, instead of home, get your ass to my hotel. I think I might have a solution for your problem.”
When Jeonghan texts him the address and Jihoon hails another cab, he doesn’t dare to hope that his friend has an actual solution.
Tumblr media
Perhaps Jihoon should have asked Jeonghan more thoroughly what kind of Hotel he works at. Because this looks very different to the building Jihoon just left. This is art, this is a fancy hotel in the middle of Paris’ most elegant streets, people in expensive clothes walking around Jihoon who has only a backpack and a guitar on his back. Jihoon gapes at the building, words he has read a million times suddenly filling his head, suddenly coming to life.
The façade of the hotel stands proudly on the bustling Parisian street, an exquisite testament to classical elegance and modern charm. The building’s cream-colored stonework is adorned with intricate carvings and ornate embellishments, each detail meticulously crafted to perfection. Above the entrance, a grand arch frames a large window, its glass shimmering in the soft light of the early evening.
Striped blue-and-white awnings shade the windows, their cheerful colors contrasting beautifully with the building’s stately architecture. Delicate wrought-iron balconies extend from the upper floors, offering glimpses of lush potted plants and inviting chairs, perfect for an intimate evening under the stars.
The entrance is framed by deep blue columns, and a passageway, warm light spills out from within, hinting at the luxurious interior that awaits guests. A pair of elegant lanterns flank the doorway, casting a gentle glow on the stone steps below.
Above the entrance, a crest adorned with elaborate scrollwork and a regal shield stands as a proud emblem of the hotel’s storied history. The name of the hotel is etched in graceful letters, a promise of the enchanting experience that lies within.
He doesn’t dare to move from where he is standing. Doesn’t dare to step foot into the hotel that looks exactly the way he had envisioned the one Tara would always read to him. Goosebumps erupt all over his skin and he swears there are tears threatening to spill out of his eyes. This must be a dream, a different reality, because there is no way Jeonghan works here.
But when Jihoon lets his eyes wander over the façade and into one of the magnificent windows - he spots his friend. Spots him on the phone behind the wooden counter, writing something down. He is here and this is real.
So, Jihoon slowly moves. One foot before the other, eyes glued to the entrance, nis heart beating in his chest. He feels silly, but he wonders if Tara had seen this as clear as he had back when she had read the book to him over and over again.
A welcome warmth meets Jihoon inside. It’s just as beautiful as the outside, he finds, his stomach turning over once more.
The lobby exudes a warm, inviting glow, courtesy of the golden chandeliers that hang from the high ceilings, casting a soft light over the polished marble floors. Rich hues of deep blue and soft gold dominate the color palette, creating a sense of opulence and sophistication. Jeonghan stands behind the mahogany desk, still talking on the phone, still not spotting Jihoon.
Jihoon, who feels so insanely out of place in his worn out jeans and the old leather jacket, with his hair unkempt and his eyebrow pierced. He moves over to the front desk, trying his hardest not to care about the stares he is getting from the people who clearly know he doesn’t actually belong here.
Jeonghan’s eyes light up when he sees him, a wide smile now on his lips as he holds up a finger as if to tell Jihoon to just be a little more patient. Jihoon carefully puts his hands on the top of the counter, his eyes roaming the lobby again.
“Of course, we can’t wait to have you back here again so soon, Miss Jones. Have a great day, bye bye!”
Jihoon’s eyes fly over to Jeonghan again when he hears the phone click.
“You’re actually here!” Jeonghan’s smile grows and he moves forward to give Jihoon probably the most awkward hug of his life over the counter. Jihoon laughs at that, patting his friend on the back.
“Well, it’s either this or the streets,” he smiles, “you never told me how… grant all of this is.” He gestures with his hands, as if to make sure Jeonghan knows he means the hotel. His blonde haired friend chuckles.
“Yeah, I thought it would come off like bragging if I did say so. I never would have heard the end of it from the boys.”
Jihoon nods. He knows exactly what Jeonghan means. Still. He can’t shake the feeling that if he had known about this… his stomach drops again.
“It’s beautiful.” Is all he eventually says, ignoring the worried look of his friend. Jihoon doesn’t know (and Jeonghan will never tell him) but there was a reason he had never mentioned this to him.
“That, it is,” Jeonghan finally responds, wiping the worry off his face and replacing it with a broad smile, “and you will get to live here for the next two weeks!”
“I will what?!” Jihoon’s eyes widen in surprise, “Jeonghan, I can barely pay rent at home, what do you-,”
“Obviously for free, dummy,” Jeonghan chuckles, “we have a free suite that has already been paid for, full price.”
Jihoon raises his brows, his hands feeling damp on top of the fancy counter.
“How come it’s free when it’s fully paid?” He asks.
“Well, there was supposed to be a wedding and…. now there isn’t one. They didn’t meet the requirements for the full or the partial refund. So, it’s free for the next two weeks since we can’t legally double book. You want it?”
It feels a little bit too good to be true, but Jihoon is in no place to turn down Jeonghan’s offer. The little voice in his head is trying to get to him, trying to make him speak the words to himself. It tries to get him to admit that this feels a lot like fate. Like a sign from above, from Tara. He doesn’t let it get to him. He’s not ready for that, and he’s certainly not melancholic enough for thoughts like this - even as a songwriter.
“I do, thank you, Han, I honestly don’t know what I’d do without you right now.”
“Oh, most certainly sleep on the streets. Find a rat for a friend, or maybe a pigeon. They are crazy over here,” Jeonghan sings as he types something in the computer, scanning one of the key cards he takes from the drawer beneath him. Jihoon watches him with his heartbeat in his ears.
“Yeah, never been a big fan of rats. Or pigeons.” Jihoon dares to look around the lobby again, seeing all those people living their life, probably never worried about any of the things he worries about. He wasn’t lying when he said he has trouble paying his rent. Work hasn’t been easy these days.
“Aaaaand, here we go!” Jeonghan grins brightly, “your key, Mr. Lee.” He holds it mid air, pulling it back slightly as Jihoon is trying to grab it. The latter gives him a funny look. Jeonghan pouts as he thinks.
“That rhymes. “Your key, Mr. Lee”.” Jihoon closes his eyes for a second. Jeonghan chuckles happily.
“Watch out, I’m coming for your job.”
“Well, stop it and do yours instead,” Jihoon replies, allowing himself to grin back at his friend and take the card from his hands, “where is this suite you promised me?”
-
Jeonghan hadn’t mentioned what kind of suite this is. There is nothing Jihoon can do but stare at his surroundings with his mouth and backpack dropped, his guitar slowly sliding down his arm.
He is in the honeymoon suite. In retrospect, it makes sense. Jeonghan did say a wedding had been canceled.
There are three rooms. Right now, Jihoon is standing in the enormous entrance way. Golden and blue like downstairs, with wood accents, a big round table in the center of the room that connected all the different rooms, a centerpiece of flowers as beautiful as a summer day adjoining it. The walls are high and plastered with fine drawing, ornating through all of the hallway and over to the other rooms. Flowers and patterns so elegant Jihoon doesn’t know how to even describe them.
He feels out of place as much as he feels content. Letting his luggage rest on the floor, he moves into the first room. It’s a large sitting room, probably as big as his whole apartment back at home. Two couches of rich dark blue; cushions in different colors, some of them reminding Jihoon of the ocean, some of the sky, rich blues and light blues, and then there is the color of dawn, orange and yellow.
A majestic cremé colored carpet lays beneath the sofas, a glass table standing between them. On top of it magazine stacks and a glass tray holding what looks like whiskey and two glasses. High windows let the sun shine through and Jihoon spots a balcony leading around the living- and bedroom, holding his breath as he imagines himself out there softly strumming his guitar with a glass of whiskey or wine. His heart warms at the thought of finally having peace. Peace in the city his former lover had loved so much.
Next up he walks into the bedroom, a king sized bed greets him with white linen covers and pillows almost as big as his torso. It looks incredibly comfortable and he couldn’t wait to lay down and relax after the day he’s had. Golden curtains sway in the wind let in by an opened window, and the view is so poetic he almost feels himself tear up. Quickly, he looks away and instead finds his way into the master bathroom. It’s all held in gold as well, gold and white for a change, an enormous tub next to a high rain shower behind a glass wall. He sighs.
This is perfect. And he most definitely needs a shower right now.
So, he retraces his steps and grabs his luggage, setting everything down next to the bed and letting his guitar rest in the corner of the room. He decides to actually unpack his backpack that probably doesn’t even hold as much clothes as he probably needs for this trip (he did think he had a washer, though) and places everything in the large closet opposite the bed.
Finding himself humming, Jihoon allows a little bit more of that earlier peace to find place in his head and heart. Perhaps there is no reason for him to be worried - to look for something to go terribly wrong on this trip. Jeonghan is off work by now, and they’ll go catch dinner together, then he’ll come back here and maybe watch a movie, fall asleep to the sound of Paris outside his window. He doesn’t know what it sounds like just yet, but he’s already excited to find out.
Ridding himself of his clothes and feeling another threat of tears when he touches the towels hanging in the bathroom, Jihoon finally lets himself step into the shower and wash all of his worries away.
Tumblr media
three; the mix-up
You don’t think your heart has ever beaten as fast as it does when you walk out the Charles de Gaulle airport and right into the arms of the driver Minghao has arranged for you. It’s not about the driver or the airport - but where you are.
Paris, the city of love, the city you feared to visit after what had happened with Jae. Yet, here you stand. Handing the driver your luggage and fishing for your phone in your purse, texting Minghao you already found your driver and are now on the way to the hotel. It all feels surreal and like you’re going to wake up any second.
Minghao forgave you without hesitation. Hugged you close to his chest and cried with you as you told him you were sorry and that he was right. You needed to do this - needed to face your demons. Together, the two of you had finalized the plans, popping open a bottle of expensive champagne and gossiping about Jaehyun and who he left you for. Little by little, you knew, you would find yourself again. And perhaps Paris was the perfect way to start.
The drive from the airport to the hotel was spent staring out the window. First you saw the highway leading from the airport to the city - greenery with trees on each side, all passing by you in a blurr. And then the beautiful streets of Paris. The fine architecture, the elegant bridges over the Seine. Heart warming at the sight of the city you dreamt about so much. Your first ever book had taken place right here, you had let your main characters kiss for the first time right there on that bridge leading from one side of Paris to the other, so close to the Louvre, to the glass pyramid you made them fight and make up all the same, just months apart. The sun is dazzling onto the dark water of the river, light dancing on the surface.
The driver comes to a stop in front of the hotel about 45 minutes after your departure from Charles de Gaulle. He holds open the door for you and helps you out of the car, smiling at you warmly and finally getting your bags out of the trunk. You thank him in some broken French and he nods at you before finding his way back to the driver’s seat.
One of the bell-boys spot you right when you walk in, their English sounding a bit like your French just now. You thank them and hand over your luggage, letting them help you carry it to the mahogany reception.
It is exactly like you remember it. You had never seen it in person, no. But you’ve found this hotel during your research, falling in love with it right away. It was a no-brainer that your honeymoon was to be held here.
You felt overwhelmed at the sight of the colors you had tried so hard to bring to paper, at the sound of soft music in the background, at the knowledge this was real and you were gonna stay here for two whole weeks.
Finally, you reach the counter where a small man stands and smiles up at you, his hair styled back.
“Welcome, how can I help you?” He says in perfect English and you place your hands on top of the counter.
“Hi,” you tell him your name, “I have a reservation.”
The man nods, looking up the reservation and finding it right away. Not marked as checked in, he notes and gives you another big smile.
“It is wonderful to have you, Miss. Will your husband be joining you?”
You expected as much. While it does hurt a little, having to say these next words, you know it’s a step in the right direction.
“I will be staying here alone, thank you.”
Tumblr media
It is more beautiful than you could have imagined and it takes you a whole lot not to start crying. Your luggage gets brought up by the nice bell-boys and you thank them by tipping them each 50 Euros. Their smiles make the loss of the money worthwhile.
Once the door closes behind them, you dare to look around. See the beautiful entrance way in all its glory. See the living room in all it’s elegance, the high ceiling and windows, the smaller bedroom with a queen sized bed and a little reading nook, two ceiling high bookshelves standing around a comfortable looking loveseat. This must be what heaven looks like.
There is nothing that can wipe that smile off your face. Everything inside you tingles with happy excitement, moving to go look at the master bedroom with the on-suite bathroom you remembered staring at for at least five minutes when you booked the room. Imagining yourself in the enormous bathtub with a glass of champagne and classical music playing, letting all the stress and hurt from the past months fade away with the notes.
You don’t notice the closet and how there are clothes hanging inside it. Neither do you see the guitar case in the corner of the room. It fascinates you - how your mind tricks you into thinking you already hear the sound of water running, accompanied by humming along to a tune. Magnificent, what the mind can do.
When you finally reach for the doorknob to push it down, yanking the door open in one swift move, you realize perhaps your mind isn’t as magnificent as you thought.
Jihoon doesn’t notice you until you scream. He swirls around, which is inherently a foolish thing to do inside a wet, slippery shower, his eyes widening whe spots you, reacting to your scream by screaming himself. He realizes he’s naked and tries to find something to cover him, taking a step forward to reach for the towel and forgetting there is literally a glass wall separating you two.
Watching the man walk face-first into the glass and stumbling back, slipping on the wet floors and falling onto his ass would have made you laugh if it wasn’t inside your shower.
“What the hell!” You yell, turning around so you don’t look at the naked man any longer.
“Who are you?!” He yells back and you almost gasp.
“I should ask you that!”
The two of you need to yell because Jihoon has not yet managed to turn the shower off. Only now does he (while rubbing his hurting back) get up, struggling in the process, his hand finding the lever to turn off the water. His nose hurts and his ass and his back.
He moves out of the shower without running into glass this time, and wraps one of the soft towels around his waist.
“I’m Jihoon,” he finally says. You think you’re suddenly stuck in a really bad movie.
“That- you’re telling me your name?!” You turn around again, staring at the stranger with disbelief in your eyes.
“You did ask who I was, didn’t you?”
For a few moments the two of you continue to stare at each other. With every passing second you notice just how naked he is. Yes, there is a towel around him now, but you certainly did not… miss what was under there when you first walked in. As much as you don’t want to, your eyes scan the stranger, or well, Jihoon as he told you, stopping at his wet torso, the defined abs and the broad chest. He might be small in height but the rest of him seems… big.
You swallow.
“If you’re done checking me out, would you mind telling me why you’re in my room?”
Heat spreads through your body and right into your face, your eyes jumping from his torso to his face.
“Your room? I’m sorry, this is my room!”
While Jihoon did hit his head, he isn’t hurt enough not to understand that you’re most likely telling the truth. But Jeonghan had said the wedding was off… that you wouldn’t come here. So, why on earth, where you here?
“I- I can explain,” he begins, taking a step forward only for you to take a step backward. He holds out his hand as if to signal he wasn’t going to do anything.
“Go right ahead,” you hate that your voice is shaking, but it’s not like it is an everyday occurrence you find a beautiful stranger in your hotel room. If this wasn’t your actual life but a book this might have been sexy, might have led to the bed behind you finding the two strangers entangled, giving in to the sexual tension between them. Not that there was any of that in this situation.
“My friend, Jeonghan, he- he works here. He told me this suite wouldn’t be used and so I- well he asked me if I wanted to stay here for my trip after I told him my airbnb didn’t actually exist and I needed a, uh, a place to stay.”
You blink at him.
“He just- he gave you my honeymoon suite for free?
Jihoon swallows.
“Well…,” he thinks a little longer on his answer, “yes. Yes, he did.”
Telling the truth is probably his best bet.
You take a deep breath, turning away from him, clenching and unclenching your hands.
“As you can see, I am here. So, please, find somewhere else to stay.”
Jihoon saw it coming, obviously. It was all too good to be true. Without saying anything else, he walks over to the closet, ready to dress himself. Just that he didn’t quite calculate the new luggage now laying in front of the bed.
It all seems to happen in slow motion.
Jihoon tripping over your suitcase, his hands desperate trying to find something to hold on to before he falls. As if on reflex, you grab his arm, yanking him up so he doesn’t fall flatly on his face, just that you somehow manage to yank him so hard, you fall off balance. With a high pitched squeak, you fall onto the bed, Jihoon landing on top of you, his towel falling off in the process of the fall and save.
A naked man is on top of you, brown eyes wide with shock staring into yours. His hands somehow moved right to the sides of your head as if to catch himself from falling even further on top of you.
You can feel him. Feel his breath on your face, his skin on yours, his friend against your thigh. More heat rises, your face, your neck, your chest, your core. It’s bad. This shouldn’t be happening right now.
The two of you are so engulfed in the moment, you don’t even realize when the door opens yet again. When voices you would normally recognize without trouble seem to fail your ears this time. Jihoon’s face so close to yours - way too distracting.
“What the fuck?!”
Realization hits you at the same time as recognition and you gasp, your knee coming up, right into Jihoon’s lower parts, a yelp escaping him as he slides off the bed, hands now covering his private area and his face in a grimace of sheer pain.
You don’t even notice it. Not really, at least. Now it’s not his face that’s distracting you but the one you used to love for so many years.
“Jaehyun?” You whisper. And for a second you think he came here to make amends, to win you back, to get on his knees and apologize - then you spot her walking in, her eyes scanning the room with distaste.
“Who is that?” Jaehyun asks and you feel your blood boil.
“What are you doing here?” You ignore his question. He isn’t looking at you, but at Jihoon still on the floor.
“Oh, well, you know. We thought that it would be such a waste to let this suite go to waste,” it is her who answers you now, her deep red manicured hands now curling around Jaehyun’s biceps.
This bitch. Your blood starts boiling. Anger makes you see red.
“You brought her here?” You hiss at Jaehyun who has the decency to look guilty at least. You snort. Then, your eyes find Jihoon who’s still on the ground, Jihoon who is still naked. Jihoon, who desperately needs a place to stay.
God knows what makes you do what you do next. Desperation? Foolery? Who knows. But you move to help Jihoon up, grabbing the towel and holding it in front of his lower half.
“Y/N,” Jaehyun starts but you interrupt him.
“I see that we both had the idea to bring our new partners, or in your case old partner, to the suite we booked together, Jae. But since I was the one who paid for it, I would kindly ask you to leave.”
New partner. Jihoon needs a few seconds before he grasps what you just said.
“New- new what?” He mumbles, but you clear your throat to drown out his voice. Jaehyun’s face is priceless and you don’t want the bluff to be uncovered so quickly.
“That is your new boyfriend?” She asks, her brows raised. You can see that she’s checking him out - his abs, his cest, his pretty face. It makes your insides turn with hatred and disgust.
“Got a problem, Sierra?” You reply, your jaw tense. Her eyes only briefly meet yours.
“Oh, absolutely not. I’m glad to see you finally got out of that moping phase, honey. It really didn’t suit you.”
Your grip around the towel tightens.
Slowly, Jihoon begins to understand what is going on. Who these people are. There was supposed to be a wedding and a honeymoon, but neither of these happened. You are the bride, or well, were supposed to be the bride. And he, the man you called Jaehyun and who had caused all the color to fade from your face, surely seems to be the groom who… never got to be the groom. And judging by the way you reacted to him and her, he guesses the reason the wedding didn’t happen was… the woman you’d called Sierra.
Blinking a few times, Jihoon realized that you were trying to convince him that he was your new boyfriend. That you had brought him here, to this hotel. It was ridiculous and straight out of a bad movie, but somehow… even if he didn’t know you, he felt like he should help you. And so, he let his arm wrap around your waist, catching you by surprise.
“I would kindly ask you to leave us be. You have done enough.”
Your head swirled to look at the man next to you. His stern face and his wet hair. Drops of water sliding down the side of his neck.
“How long has this been going on?” Jaehyun asks, ignoring Jihoon’s request. You turn to look at him again.
“That’s none of your business. You heard him, Jae. Leave. This isn’t your room anymore.”
Another beat of silence falls between the four of you. You try your best to ignore Sierra and cling onto Jihoon’s hand like it was the only saving grace. Perhaps that was true. Holding Jae’s gaze and trying to calm down your hurting heart, your wishes to throw something at him.
“Fine. I heard the honeymoon suite in the Hilton is much nicer than this one, baby.”
It is then that you see it. The rings on her finger. Your stomach drops. He married her. Oh, you’re about to throw up. Jihoon seems to notice your change of emotions, quickly clearing his throat.
“Great. Have fun in Paris then.”
He carefully takes the towel from your hand, wrapping it around him fully again. Then, he looks at you. The overwhelming urge to give you a hug is almost unbearable.
“Maybe,” Jaehyun said, “since we are both seeing other people and have moved on - we could grab dinner sometime this week. All of us.”
Jihoon sees the way your eyes shake at the suggestion. And he is just about to say no, that that’s not a good idea, when you push your shoulder back and hold your head high.
“What a lovely idea. We’d love to, isn’t that right, baby?” You interlock your fingers with Jihoon’s and he stares at you for just a second, before nodding.
“Sure,” he breathes out, looking at Jaehyun and Sierra.
It most certainly isn’t a lovely idea, he is well aware of that. This whole thing isn’t a good idea. But here he is. Holding the hand of a woman he barely met twenty minutes ago. A woman who has seen him naked, a woman who had his half hard cock against the inside of her thigh. A woman he had been closer to than any other in the last five years.
No, this wasn’t a good idea. This was an awful, horrible idea that could only go so, so wrong.

seungcheol tries to take it in stride. really, he does. he's convinced he can be very normal about this, even though it will probably have him preening the whole day. he's always thrived most on words of affirmation, and what's more affirming than the truth?
jeonghan's joking, of course. he knows deep down that your little slip doesn't immediately entail a relationship, but he's definitely intent on going out swinging. the light teasing is an attempt to get you to think about a time where you can freely say 'i love you' to him every day.
there's a fair amount of sincerity in joshua's reaction. his first thought is to make sure that you're okay with it, since he has some idea that you've probably tripped on the words. but give him that leeway and he'll take it in a heartbeat. you've started saying it; he'll never let you hear the end of it.
if junhui manages to feign nonchalance, it's because of his acting prowess. he's smug and giddy, though he's not about to let you know that. he's the type to pull the rug underneath you a couple of days later, right when you've probably forgotten it. "so…" he'll drawl. "how much do you love me, hm?"
to no one's surprise, soonyoung is decisively not chill about it. this is A Big Deal to him! an 'i love you'? something he's wanted to hear for ages? he needs to make sure he's not dreaming. there's the dopiest smile on his face, because you love him. it's the best thing he's heard.
wonwoo's hands are shaking. his throat is suddenly dry, and he's relatively sure his brain has short-circuited. it's— just an offhand thing. at least that's what he tries to convince himself. the reality: he's going to be replaying the words in his head for weeks on end.
it doesn't strike jihoon immediately. maybe it hits him once you're gone; maybe it occurs to him when the moment has already passed. one thing's for sure: he's not going to let it go unanswered. he's a little late, not on time, but that doesn't mean he doesn't mean it. you know that, right?
the words make something bloom and blossom in seokmin's chest. they take root like a promise, and even though he tries not to get ahead of itself, it's hard. he's so, so happy to hear it from you that he'll be walking on clouds for the days to come.
mingyu doesn't hate you. that much is certain. he just hates the power you have over him— how you can upend his entire day with a couple of choice words. he had thought he'd be stronger than this, but here he is. panicking because of 'ily'? god, he can't afford to be in shambles like this.
ever the rational type, minghao will be the type to press, "how do you love me?" he can't afford any missteps, needs to know you're on the same page. if you love him as a friend, then so be it. but if there's a prospect for anything more, even just a minute worth of it… well. he would like to know.
joking about it is a coping mechanism. that's something seungkwan subscribes to, at the very least. it gives him time to gather his wits, this whole keeping-up-a-facade thing. (ask anyone: he had been smiling a little too hard at his phone when your text came in. the eyes never lie.)
rarely is vernon thrown off his game like this. he's not supposed to be melting over a flippant 'ily', and yet here he is— trying (and failing) to be cool about your slip-up. can you blame him? he's wanted you for so long, and the words can be as good as a promise if he really wanted them to be.
you're not playing fair. chan has half a mind to make you suffer, to not give you the satisfaction of a reaction. alas, he's always had a soft spot for you. that extends to unquestioning forgiveness, and reciprocity where it matters. yes, even in accidental confessions.

Tumblr media
You’re used to your best friend telling you everything.
You’ve been on the receiving end of Vernon’s long-winded movie reviews and unfounded conspiracy theories for God-knows-how-long. It’s both a blessing and a curse, being his go-to confidante.
And yet he hadn’t bothered to warn you about this.
As he slides into the vacant seat next to you, nothing in his expression gives away what he might be thinking. He only greets you with a noncommittal “‘sup?”, like he hadn’t just rolled up to your high school reunion with a buzz cut.
A buzz cut. Something stirs in the pit of your stomach as you eye Vernon’s new hairstyle.
It’s the first time he’s tried something like this. In all the years you’ve known him, he’s always kept his hair relatively the same. Mops of dark, natural colors, barely falling into his eyes. This is new. This is—
“You’re staring.”
His tone is humorless and factual, but a corner of his mouth has twitched upward. It looks a lot like a wordless Gotcha.
You glare up at him. “Is this why you told me to hitch a ride with Seungkwan?”
“No.” Vernon’s attempt to hide his smile is pitiful. He amends, “Maybeee.”
You nudge your shoulder against him in a show of annoyance. “You’re annoying,” you grumble for the lack of a better insult.
Vernon responds with a low chuckle. A couple of your peers are already throwing him compliments— calls of “nice look, man” and “good shit, ‘Non”— and you use the distraction to take a swig of your drink.
If you’re going to deal with your best friend unexpectedly getting hot, you’re not going to do it sober.
After making small talk with Chan, Vernon turns back to you. “So,” he says simply.
“So?”
“What do you think?”
What do you think? You think you want to take Vernon into the alley behind the bar so you can do unspeakable things to him. You’re not about to say that out loud, though.
“Everybody thinks you look good,” you answer flippantly.
Vernon twirls his bottle on the table. He’s never been that big of a drinker. Time and time again, he’s expressed that he only really ever goes to these social events for you.
“I don’t care what everyone thinks,” he muses. “I care what you think.”
You swear you could strangle him then and there. Now was not the time for his casual flirtations.
“I think you look like shit,” you snipe, but the lack of heat in your tone is telling.
Vernon bites back a smile. You tilt your head back and down more of your drink. It’s going to be a long night.
Sure enough, you’re relatively tipsy by the end of the reunion. It would’ve been easy for your inebriation to go under the radar; the likes of Soonyoung and Wonwoo were in a far worse state than you.
But Vernon has always looked out for you. It’s a fact you’re reminded of when you feel his arm hook around your waist, the touch meant to steady you as your group stumbles out onto the sidewalk.
“Woah, there,” he says with amusement when you nearly trip over your feet. “How are you gonna get home at this rate?”
Your alcohol-addled brain had conveniently forgotten the reason why you drank so much in the first place. Now, though, you’re treated to an up-close view of the perpetrator.
There’s just enough soju in your system to embolden you. “Easy,” you slur. “You’re going to take me home.”
One of Vernon’s eyebrows arch upward. “Me?” he echoes, feigning innocence.
You nod solemnly. “You.”
“I don’t remember ever promising that.”
“Doesn’t matter. You’re gonna do it.”
“Am I?”
“Yup.” You lean into Vernon’s side. As you look up at him, you have a vague idea that you’re playing dirty— batting your eyelashes, pouting ever so slightly. “You’re gonna take me home ‘cause you looove me.”
An emotion you can’t quite place flickers across Vernon’s expression. It’s a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moment, and you somehow manage to convince yourself that it must have been a trick of the light.
He’s back to looking like his usual self when he huffs, “Yeah, yeah. Whatever helps you sleep at night.”
Vernon can bitch and moan, but his actions contradict his complaints. He holds your hand in the back of the cab. He maneuvers you into your apartment’s elevator. He even gets your door for you, using the spare key that’s always been in his wallet.
He’s being the picture perfect best friend, except you don’t want that right now. You want something far more treacherous, and all your misplaced liquid courage puts you in the position to take.
The two of you are barely past the threshold before you’re pushing Vernon up against your front door. The door shuts behind him, and he glances down at you with mild surprise.
He has the height and strength advantage. He could easily push you off him. You’re expecting it; hoping for it, even.
Please, the sane voice in the back of your head murmurs. Keep me from doing something stupid.
Instead, Vernon’s hands land on your hips in a bid to keep you balanced.
“You good?” he asks, his voice pitched low.
There goes your voice of reason.
“I’m sorry,” you respond.
“Why—?”
Vernon’s words die out when your mouth crashes against his. The initial force of it makes you wince, and you feel a pang of guilt when Vernon doesn’t immediately kiss you back. You’re about to pull away when he pulls you flush into his chest.
The kiss is clumsy, heated. A clash of teeth and tongues. Your hands move over Vernon like you can’t decide what to touch or hold first. When your fingers instinctively go to thread through his hair, you whine in the absence of anything to hold on to.
The whimper seems to snap some sense into Vernon.
He breaks away from you, his eyes flicking to the thin strand of saliva that connects your lips.
“Not—” His chest heaves. He takes a moment to gather his bearings before going on, “— like this.”
Your fingers flex around the nape of Vernon’s neck. “What?” you rasp.
Vernon flinches, his fingers tightening around the hem of your shirt. “Don’t want this.”
“Oh.” God, you think you’re going to cry.
He recognizes the way you waver on the single word, and his expression immediately softens. “No, no,” he says hastily, his lips moving to press a kiss to your forehead. “I want this. I want you. Just— not like this. Not when you’re drunk.”
“I’m not drunk.”
“Babe, please.” There’s a little bit of everything in Vernon’s tone. Desperation, exasperation, fondness. “Let’s pick this up tomorrow, yeah?”
It feels almost cruel to cut things short even though it is technically the right thing to do. You swallow the lump in your throat. Just from that, Vernon already clocks the unspoken question that seems to be nagging at you.
“I’ll still want you in the morning.” His words are a promise you don’t think you deserve, but his hushed devotion eases the initial sting.
There’s an almost pained expression on his face, like he’s already reconciling with the prospect of this being the first and last time he gets to have you this way. Still, he flashes you that smile that always has you going a little weak in the knees, tipsy or not.
His next words are quiet and heartbreaking.
“It’s a matter of whether you’ll still want me.”
Tumblr media
You still do.
When you wake up the next day tucked snugly into your bed, the pit of your stomach churning with emotion, you know that much. You still want Vernon.
You’re just about to go looking for him when your bedroom door creaks open. Vernon steps in, takes one look at your face, and knows.
“Vernon,” you breathe, and he crosses the room in quick strides to get to you.
It doesn’t matter that the two of you are in last night’s clothes. It doesn’t matter that you still both taste vaguely like alcohol. Vernon kisses you like he’s been waiting and wanting to do it for much, much longer than just last night.
The force of the kiss has you pressing back into the bed. Vernon leans over you, his body covering yours. A strangled groan rises from the back of his throat when your body arches up against his.
He pulls back briefly, his gaze heavy-lidded as he looks down at you. “You’re sober, right?” he exhales. “You want this?”
“Vernon.”
“Answer me, babe. Please.”
“I want this.” Your hands grasp at him, trying to pull him back in. “Want you.”
“Shit,” he groans. “Don’t have to tell me twice.”
He gives in and kisses you again, his tongue licking along your bottom lip. It’s the sort of kiss that you see in the movies, the kind that makes every nerve in your body light up.
A part of you knows that you ought to take things slow. Your friendship is on the line, after all, and this is something you should probably talk about first.
But then Vernon’s hand slips down to squeeze your thigh, and suddenly taking your time is the last thing on your mind. You nip at his lower lip before gently pushing him off.
“Sex,” you blurt out, and Vernon freezes on top of you.
“Sex?” he echoes.
“Do you—” This wasn’t exactly how you wanted to ask, but to hell with it. “Are we going to fuck, Vernon?”
“Jesus.” Your best friend laughs, his face dipping to hide in the crook of your neck. His hair pricks at your cheek. “Are you always this forward?”
A small smile tugs at your mouth. You go to press your lips to his temple, murmuring your next words in between the chaste kiss. “Only to you.”
Vernon lets out a shaky breath before tilting his head to look at you.
“I’m all in if you are,” he says bluntly.
Your answer comes without a moment of hesitation. “All in,” you confirm, and the last of Vernon’s restraint snaps.
His lips start to chart kisses down the curve of your jaw, your neck, your collarbone. You sigh contentedly, and the kisses are enough to distract you from Vernon’s obvious struggle in getting your shorts off. When he finally manages with the button and the zipper, he tugs the piece of clothing all the way down and off.
Vernon’s eyes flick down to your lower half. He’s seen you half-dressed countless times before, but this is something different all together. Tentatively, one of his hands goes to rest over your center. You buck into his touch with a keening cry, and Vernon lets out a low cuss.
It doesn’t help at all that he can feel the wet patch that has accumulated at the center of your underwear. Vernon’s hips autonomously cant down into your thighs, his body seeking some form of friction and relief amid his growing arousal.
“Can’t believe this,” he mumbles as he goes back to mouthing the sensitive skin of your neck. “Can’t believe you, fuck. Where’s this coming from, huh?”
You wish you could be half as coherent as Vernon is. As it is, though, all you can do is rut against the heel of his palm. You manage to sputter out a broken “what?” at his question.
There’s a smile in Vernon’s voice as he shifts above you, moving so that he can whisper directly into your ear. “Why are you suddenly so needy for me, babe?” he asks while nudging your underwear to the side.
Your legs spread to accommodate him. The two of you have barely even started, and yet you’re already struck dumb by your best friend’s weight on top of you, by the way he’s moving. You open your mouth to protest— maybe lie that you’ve always wanted him, thank you very much— but then two of his fingers slip into your heat.
That robs all of your words from you. Vernon steadily begins to plunge his digits in and out of you, his other hand holding you down by the hip to keep you from squirming too much. He hisses when your hands fly to grasp his shoulders.
“We’ve drank together plenty of times before,” he pants, his warm breath fanning over your ear. “So it’s not the alcohol.”
“Vernon—, mmph— please—”
“And it’s not jealousy, either.” He curls his digits just so. Enough to have your eyes rolling to the back of your head. “Because you’re the only one I had eyes for at that damn reunion.”
“Please,” you whine, finding it difficult to focus on your mounting pleasure amid Vernon’s interrogation. “Can we not—”
A low laugh rumbles out of Vernon’s chest. He stills his movements, keeping the pads of his fingers pressed against that sweet, spongy spot inside of you.
“Admit it,” he teases.
You shoot him a venomous look. “Admit what?”
“You like my new haircut.”
If Vernon wasn’t knuckle deep into you right now, you might’ve actually caused him bodily harm. You’d do anything to wipe that smug smirk off his face, but you’re desperate enough to give in and bite out a breathless, “Fuck you, fine. I like it.”
“See?” He pushes his fingers deeper, drawing a pornographic moan from you. “That wasn’t so hard, was it?”
You’ve always known your best friend could be a little shit, but you had no idea that it would translate in bed, too. You don’t have the time to dwell on it. Not when his thumb starts to draw circles around your clit, matching the pace of his fingers’ shallow thrusts.
You’re so lost in the moment that him pulling his fingers out feels almost like a punishment. You let out a sound of confusion, though you’re quickly quieted when you realize Vernon is shucking off his jeans and boxers.
You follow suit until both of you are naked, until Vernon is climbing back on top of you with his fist wrapped loosely around his cock. He slides the tip of his cock through your sopping folds, and the feel of it is enough to have you letting out a pathetic, desperate cry.
“Babe,” you plea, and the novelty of the pet name being used is the straw on the camel’s back.
He pushes into you slowly. It’s a sweet kind of torture, the way you can feel every ridge and vein of his cock along your walls.
Even now, you know that Vernon is biding his time for your benefit. He’s letting you adjust to his length, splitting you open on his cock with deliberate intent. Every muscle in his body is probably screaming to go faster, to let your tight cunt milk him for all it’s worth, but he’s not going to do that until you’re ready.
You wait until Vernon is completely sheathed before giving an experimental roll of your hips. The friction has the two of you letting out twin moans; Vernon’s, a little more strangled than yours.
“Don’t do that,” he warns. “I’m trying to last out here.”
The jab makes you giggle; the sound catches in your throat when Vernon finally begins to move. He sets an erratic pace, his dick slamming into your cunt with the vigor of a man who has dreamt of this moment.
His hands grip the back of your thighs as he pounds into you. Later, he’ll divulge how it felt for him— to hear the obscene squelches of your cunt, to watch the fucked out bliss on your expression. Vernon absolutely loves it, loves you, and he resolves to tell you all about it once he’s done railing you into next week.
“So— fucking— perfect,” he chokes out in between thrusts.
The compliment has you clenching around him, and Vernon’s hips stutter for a bit before snapping back into action. He seems intent on getting you to finish before him or at least with him, which is likely why one of his hands drops back down to the apex of your thighs.
A moan tears out of you when he pauses to gather some of your arousal on his fingers. When he begins to play with your puffy clit, he goes right back to pounding you into your mattress.
With the way Vernon is moving on top of you, you briefly imagine what it would look like with his previous hairstyle. His hair might have flopped over his forehead; you might have held onto the dark strands instead of raking your nails down his back. It would make for a pretty sight, you think.
Not as pretty as the one right now, though.
With Vernon’s hair short and evenly trimmed, you can see everything. The beads of sweat forming along his hairline. The pink flush of his high cheeks. And his eyes, dark and wild and looking only at you—
Your orgasm blindsides you. You can only let out a cry of Vernon’s name before you’re creaming on his cock, the sensation of your high knocking the wind out of you.
A low string of “shit, shit, shit” bursts from Vernon. He manages a couple more thrusts— abusing the fluttering tightness of your pussy for just a minute— before he’s pulling out and frantically pumping his twitching hardness. Ropes of his cum shoots over your bare chest, painting you in white.
“Fuck,” Vernon pants.
His free hand reaches up for his hair, seemingly out of instinct. He lets out a huff of a laugh when he realizes there’s no hair for his fingers to run through.
He leans down to kiss you even though he’s still breathless and spent, if only because he wants his words said right against your mouth.
“If I had known a buzz cut is all it would take,” he murmurs. “I would’ve gotten it ages ago.”

“good girl, you’d feel so good around me. can’t wait for when i can finally fuck you the way you deserve. my princess deserves the best, right? i’ll give you every-”
“y/n, are you okay?” a voice startles you, making you hit the spacebar on your laptop aggressively and yank your earphones out. you look up to see joshua hong, your classmate, and your college crush, standing in front of you, a look of concern etched onto his features.
his head is tilted to the side in confusion, and you feel your cheeks grow even hotter.
how is he acting so innocent? you think to yourself. as if he wasn’t moaning in my ear two seconds ago-
“are you sick?” joshua asks, and you shake your head immediately.
“n-no! i’m fine, it’s just hot in here,” you stutter, laughing nervously. “you know how i get in the heat.”
joshua nods slowly, as if he isn’t fully convinced, but he doesn’t probe any further either, and you couldn’t be more grateful for it. “cool, i’ll let you get back to your work then. how’s the playlist i sent you?”
your body stiffens up instantly at the mention of the playlist. you mean the playlist of you jerking yourself off while you talk dirty in that sweet voice of yours? that playlist?
“good! i love it!” you exclaim, sounding too cheery even to yourself. you pinch your thigh when you see joshua looking even more bewildered at your strange behaviour. “i- i have to finish up this essay. let’s talk later?”
“yeah,” joshua nods, fixing the strap of his bag and you couldn’t be any more relieved at the sight of him getting ready to leave. “see you around, y/n.”
you wave goodbye and watch as he walks away from your table, your heart beating rapidly, and something else pulsing too.
“fuck, joshua hong, what exactly are you hiding behind that angelic face?”
how had you managed to end up with an entire playlist of ‘angel boy,’ joshua hong’s moaning audios? you have no clue.
it had started out as a simple conversation. joshua and you were working on a project together, and joshua had offered to play some music to keep the both of you motivated.
as his playlist progressed, you realized that your music taste was very similar, which led you to ask joshua, “hey, can i get your playlist? i really like these songs.”
“of course!” joshua had beamed at you, the smile making your heart skip a beat. later that evening, joshua sent you the playlist, and you hadn't bothered listening to it, up until you went to the library to catch up on assignments and had joshua groaning in your ear as he slowly worked himself towards a climax.
a normal person would stop listening immediately. a normal person may have even felt disgusted.
but you didn't feel like that, at all.
no, you packed up your things in a haste, stuffing your laptop and notes in your bag, and ran back to your apartment.
you put your phone on silent, locked your door, and turned off all the lights, save for a small nightlight.
you propped up your laptop on the bed and sat in front of it to examine the playlist joshua had sent you, plugging your earphones into your ears. to make sure no one else hears the audios, you reason.
your efforts were in vain, mainly because you don't share your apartment with anyone who possibly may hear joshua, but also because the link of the playlist takes you to a website first.
www.angelaudios.com
the website is primarily black with neon accents, and the account description displayed in a large, white font reads:
Welcome to ShuaTalks! Sit back, turn your volume up, and let me make your fantasies come true 💋
your heart thuds in your chest. there's no way this account, on a website that has millions of audios, belongs to joshua. the hong joshua you know.
still, you scroll down to find all the audios uploaded on the website and click on the first one you see.
POV: you help me relax after a stressful day 💗
as the audio loads, you increase the volume on your laptop.
this is only to confirm that it isn't joshua, you tell yourself as you hit play.
at first, you only hear the click of a door, and the sound of someone sitting down on a chair or couch.
then, you hear the voice you'd recognize anywhere.
“hi baby, sorry for coming home so late,” joshua says, in that silky voice of his, and then there's a pause, presumably for the listener to imagine their own response.
something akin to arousal pools in your gut, even though joshua hasn't gotten to the… sexual part.
“i had such a tiring week at work” joshua sighs, frustration creeping into his tone. “missed spending time with you.”
“missed your body, too,” his tone grows darker with those words, and you unknowingly let out a whimper.
“did you miss me too, baby? missed me stretching out your little hole?” joshua's voice remains as sweet as honey, but his words are making you all too aware of the mess you're making in your panties.
your hand hesitates at the waistband of your shorts. you really shouldn't be touching yourself to the voice of your classmate-slash-crush, no matter how dirty his words were.
“you're already wet, hm?” joshua mutters into your ear, and you gasp softly. if you close your eyes, you can imagine him sitting next to you in the flesh, speaking every word into your ear.
“i'll take good care of you, sweetheart. but, shouldn't i get a payment in advance for it?” you can hear the smirk in his voice, and fuck it, you think, before hastily tugging your shorts and panties off in one go. you prop yourself up against the headboard and bend your legs at the knees before finally brushing your fingers over your dripping core.
and fuck, you haven't been this wet in forever. all your recent hook-ups were rather mediocre, and you don't know if you should be embarrassed by the fact that merely someone’s voice can have you soaking your panties completely.
“mm, fuck, see how hard you make me?” joshua's voice is deep and the slightest rasp makes its way through the smooth tone of his voice. “c'mon baby, don't tease. you know how i like being touched.”
his words spur you on, two fingers spreading your folds apart as you run your middle finger through the slit, rubbing lightly over your hole.
you inhale shakily as you finally dip a finger into your hole, a low whine escaping your throat. coincidentally, it’s in perfect sync with a groan joshua lets out.
“shit, your hand looks so tiny wrapped around me,” his voice is breathy, and you wish you could hear him moan with that melodious voice of his. “yeah, just like that, nice and slow.”
you hear the tell-tale signs of joshua's hand working over his own cock in tandem with the way you thrust your finger into yourself.
“baby, ‘s too dry. spit on it,” joshua instructs, and almost as if you're under a spell, you bring your fingers into your mouth to coat them in saliva before going back to thrust two fingers in this time.
“you're so good at this,” joshua whines, and it makes a loud moan escape you. your other hand comes down to pinch your clit. “‘m not gonna last long if you keep that up, darling, fuck.”
you start rubbing tight circles over your clit now, your orgasm building up rapidly. “joshua, fuck, i'm gonna cum-”
“you've been touching yourself this whole time?” joshua laughs. “naughty little girl, aren't you?”
the way a pre-recorded audio could guess so accurately just what you're doing is what pushes you over the edge, just as joshua reaches his climax too, your breathy whimpers harmonizing with his rough grunts.
“you take such good care of me, baby,” joshua pants, and you keep your eyes closed, trying to process one of the best orgasms you've ever had. “why don't i show you just how much i appreciate you, hm?”
you wait with bated breath for him to continue talking, but the audio ends there, a soft static noise filling your ears instead.
“holy shit, that was insane-”
your post-orgasm bliss is rudely interrupted by the loud ringing of your phone, which was apparently not on silent.
the contact name flashes on the screen, and your heart drops to your stomach.
the screen of your phone displays the name of the man who, unknowingly, just made you cum: joshua hong.
fuck.
