I wonder if part of the reason people believe sex scenes are unnecessary because it 'doesn't further the plot' only think that because they've only ever seen hetero couples with zero chemistry where the sex is usually only conveyed as a reward for being the cool hero who deserves sex from a woman. Which is redundant in the audience's eyes because that ideal is obviously implied implicitly.
