The Sound of Music (1965)

Rewatching The Sound of Music as an adult feels like pulling back a curtain on my childhood only now, instead of just dancing nuns and kids yodeling, I’m also staring into the existential abyss. As a kid, it was all about the songs and the twirling. Now? It’s a gut-punch of love, loss, and, oh yeah, figuring out how to outrun Nazis.

Julie Andrews is pure chaos in the best possible way. Her Maria is that rare combo of “messy disaster” and “completely irresistible.” And Christopher Plummer? Let me just say, I get it now, Grandma. The way he stares at her during "Something Good" could melt glaciers. Their chemistry walks the line between romantic tension and "Seriously, just kiss already."

The music is, of course, untouchable. “Do Re Mi” will make you want to drag strangers into an impromptu flash mob, while “Edelweiss” sneaks up on you like a bittersweet goodbye you didn’t know you were about to have.

But here’s the thing: this movie isn’t just a sugar-coated musical. That undercurrent of dread, the creeping rise of the Third Reich, adds this edge that makes every joyful moment feel a little fragile. It’s a reminder that even the most beautiful stories can have shadows hanging over them. And honestly, rewatching it in today’s political climate hit me hard. Seeing the Von Trapps face a society sliding into fascism feels uncomfortably prescient. The way propaganda spreads, the fear of speaking out, the normalization of hate these aren’t relics of the past. They’re warnings we didn’t take seriously enough. The film doesn’t just entertain; it quietly asks us to pay attention.

In the end, The Sound of Music is a forever classic equal parts heartwarming and heartbreaking. And yeah, the “So Long, Farewell” earworm is still haunting me.

I kind of wish disney’s ~weird period~ had lasted longer. Like all of a sudden we were getting these films like lilo & stitch and Atlantis and the emperor’s new groove and treasure planet and they were so fun and DIFFERENT. Just thinking about what the pitches for those movies had to have been like is so surreal?? A little blue criminal alien crash lands on a Hawaiian island and gets adopted by two sisters dealing with social services that teach him about the value of family. An Inca emperor gets turned into a llama and john goodman helps him get back to his palace and one of the bad guys talks to squirrels. Treasure island but in SPACE. Like, on the surface, the premise for these films seem so random but they all TOTALLY WORKED IN REALLY GREAT WAYS??? idk I just really miss that early 2000s spark of offbeat creativity in Disney’s timeline.

That Cinderella drove the prince mad by obsessively cleaning the castle. They don’t say what happens after because there is no after.The be-all and end-all of romantic love was marriage. But it wasn’t always like that. The 16th century had “courtly love”, which had nothing to do with sex. The relationship between a knight and a married lady of the court; And so they could never consummate their love. They rose above “going to the toilet in front of each other” love, and went after something more divine. They took sex out of the equation, leaving them with a union of souls. Think of this. Sex was always the fatal love potion. Look at the literature of the time. All consummation could lead to was madness, despair or death. Experts, scholars and my Aunt Esther are united in one belief: True love has spiritual dimensions, while romantic love is a lie.A myth. A soulless manipulation. And speaking of manipulation; lt’s like going to the movies and seeing the lovers kiss, The music swells, and we buy it, right? So when my date kisses me, and l don’t hear strings, l dump him. The question is, why do we buy it? Because, myth or manipulation, we all want to fall in love. That experience makes us feel completely alive. Our everyday reality is shattered, and we are flung into the heavens.
