"Do you think we'd get in trouble if anyone found out?"
"Yeah," I said right away, because even though no one had ever told me, specifically, not to kiss a girl before, nobody had to.

I'm in a "watching all the wlw movies I haven't seen yet" phase and I just watched The Miseducation of Cameron Post (2018) about a 90s American teen who gets sent to conversion "therapy" camp after having been found kissing another girl.
I liked the floaty, earthy tones of the movie. They treated a very difficult subject with delicacy. I liked the outdoorsy shots and the general 90s soft grunge vibes. The topic is incredibly depressing and creepy but they show it in understated ways - a foot on the back of a "disciple" who is having a breakdown, private letters torn open, insidious psychological manipulation. How much of the principle of the thing relies on peer pressure, on how those who don't want to get along with the process are shamed, blamed for impeding the progress of others, and called agressive and sinful. I liked the main friend group a lot, their weed growing hikes and especially Adam, the Two Spirit Native American character who has to face racism and forced assimilation on top of the rest (and is very good at bullshit.) The moment where they're all singing in the kitchen was simple but so happy. As was the heartbreaking moment where one of the kids breaks down while citing a passage of the Bible where God says he appreciates weakness - then why is he rejected for his ? And I liked the quietly neutral, uncertain but hopeful ending.
However, the main character was a bit of a blank slate for me at times. The plot was a bit...lacking in structure, and it felt like the MC's arc was mostly solved by other people doing things and having things happen to them. Also I wish we had more bonding scenes w the main trio instead of w the roommate, because that went a bit too fast for me. I liked Cameron as a character, her vivacity and compassion and strength of character but I can't help but feel there should have been more of it.
Anyway, has it flaws but remains a beautiful movie and worth seeing if you're in the mood for something subtle, a bit sad but also life affirming.
What should I watch next ? Any wlw movie recs ?

The Miseducation of Cameron Post is so underrated. Let me just start there. Not to mention, Mark's breakdown hit hard. The hurt in his voice, the fact that he recites the passage that was his father's favourite even though he had just rejected him and how he didn't cry. He tried so hard to be accepted by his father and was always kind to everyone but it still wasn't enough leading to him giving up completely because there was nothing else he could possibly do. What he did to himself after that scene was him finally letting his emotions loose and showed how his character shattered from realisation that he would never be accepted for being who he is. His story was heartbreaking and for anyone who is in a similar position as him, please know that this community is here for you. Don't hurt yourself, it's not your fault for being who you are. If you're having trouble, you can even message me. I might not know you but you can always talk to me because you need to know that you do matter.

- Did Rick tell you guys the story about how he was saved?
- You mean how Christian allies happened upon his car in the parking lot of a gay bar and went inside to investigate?

I’ve been thinking a lot about how in The Miseducation of Cameron Post, “Dr.” Lydia March is very fixated on Adam’s hair. Throughout the film she insults him for it, pulls at it, threatens to shave it off, and eventually does. I see this as a physical manifestation of how it isn’t just sexuality the conversion camp trying to torture out of these kids; Adam’s culture is equally seen as a threat. (Which is an important point to make when him being Two-Spirit is a cultural thing.)
And when you look at the bullshit they have him write on his iceberg:
“Wrong gender modelling” is on there.
The fact that Adam does not adhere to colonizer views on what are masculine and what is feminine appearances angers Lydia just as much as the fact that he likes dudes.
Anyway, I liked that this film touches a little on how homophobia and racism can very often intertwine.
