My final reflection is done and uploaded to ELMS. Arts Fest / Academic Showcase both went great.

Last minute decision to swap out Breezin for Autumn Leaves! Much jazzier and more interesting to analyze.

I attended the National Portrait Gallery again! They had a fascinating exhibit on the Civil War. It took me back to 11th grade, but I felt more connected to the individuals through the artwork. My trip made me consider the role of art in our educational system, and what a powerful tool it can be.

Last weekend, I saw “Black Panther.” It was amazing on so many levels. The acting, scoring, and screenplay were all incredible. The movie sent a very powerful message to its audiences. It was one of the best superhero films I’ve seen in a long time!

I’ve been listening to “Breezin’” A LOT, and even though it borders on pop, I’ve decided to go with it, because it shows a crossing of boundaries between jazz and pop that was a natural progression throughout the twentieth century.

“Four on Six” is done! Woohoo! Time to move on to the George Benson tune.

BAM! My guitar is back in action. I’m making good progress on “Four on Six.” I also decided to learn the studio solo instead of the live recording, which is also well known.

My guitar is out of whack! It keeps going out of tune, and is getting in the way of practicing the solos. I need to fix this ASAP to get back on track.

I had a really productive conversation with Jerry about my first look presentation! I was super open to his comments and feedback. He began by talking about just how he liked the general idea, and thought it was cool since jazz isn’t really in the mainstream world anymore. Also, he said that is was impressive that I was transcribing the songs by ear. He didn’t give any specific criticisms, but he did inquire as to why I chose the presentation style I did. (Video played on loop). I said that I thought it was the best way for the audience to absorb the music. Reading about it isn’t enough; they need to hear. In terms of his PowerPoint, I love what he is doing. I did suggest, which he was open to hearing, that he might want to add more text to his PowerPoint so that it is easier to follow along.

I’ve started learning my first song! “Seven Come Eleven.” Right now, I am mainly learning the song by ear (listening to the track on YouTube.) After I feel comfortable with the piece, I will start transcribing it in standard notation.

I’ve picked my third song! Breezin’ by George Benson. This song, from the 70s, is definitely more of a jazz-pop-funk fusion tune, but there are directly influences from the jazz greats before Benson, and will be great to illuminate the breaking down of genre walls.

I’ve picked my second song! I’m going with Four in Six, by Wes Montgomery. I’ve specifically chosen the live version, because I think it swings a bit more. I can already here Charlie Charlie Christians influence in his playing.
